After our story about Brandon Yoon’s grandmother and her Sunny Cleaners went viral—saved from closure by an outpouring of community support—I felt compelled to dig deeper. What I uncovered was far more disturbing than I imagined.

Maybe dry cleaners and laundromats aren’t just struggling because times were tough. A lawsuit says hundreds of businesses like Sunny Cleaners have been systematically undermined for years.  

The Lawsuit:  Goliath Schemes David?

Buried in court files is a lawsuit that should alarm anyone who’s ever trusted their neighborhood dry cleaner: Life without Laundry vs. Rinse. The allegations are staggering.

According to the lawsuit, Rinse—a huge nationwide corporate laundry pickup and delivery service—engaged in a calculated scheme of deceptive marketing that lasted approximately four years. Here’s how it says the scheme worked:

Rinse had hundreds of pages on its website listing the names of different local and mom-and -pop laundromats and dry cleaners in 13 cities. For you coders out there, all this information can be found on page 11 of the lawsuit. 

When customers searched for their favorite laundry service on Google, the results make it appear that these businesses are owned by or connected to Rinse, when they are actually separate companies.

Rinse’s website had individual subpages for hundreds of local laundromats and dry cleaners. Even though most of these businesses didn’t do laundry or dry cleaning for Rinse, when the customers got to the subpage there was a “schedule pickup” button.

The lawsuit alleges that customers clicked the “schedule a pickup” button believing they were arranging service with their mom-and-pop shop.  But that button didn’t connect them to their trusted neighborhood cleaner at all. It routed them directly to Rinse’s corporate service instead.

The mom-and-pop shops whose names, locations, and reputations were being used on these subpages? According to the lawsuit, they were rarely—if ever—actually fulfilling those orders. And most likely never even knew customers were being diverted away from them in the first place.

The Scope Is Heartbreaking

The lawsuit alleges that hundreds of laundromats and dry cleaners across 13 cities had their identities co-opted this way. Four years of lost customers. Four years of diverted revenue. Four years during which small business owners like Brandon’s grandmother may have wondered why loyal customers stopped coming back.

When you look at who owns the laundromats and dry cleaners pictured in the lawsuit, a pattern emerges that’s impossible to ignore: a significant number of the affected businesses have Asian owners. Express Laundromat (owned by Wuke Weng), Back Bay Laundromat (owned by Kwang Kim), and Andrew Place (owned by Tony Nguuye).  Family businesses built by immigrants who came to America believing in the promise of honest work and fair competition.

More Than Business—It’s Personal

As the son of a Chinese American immigrant, my father built his life in the t-shirt business, this hits close to home. I’ve watched my father work grueling hours, building something from nothing. These aren’t just businesses—they’re legacies. 

The alleged deception by Rinse wasn’t just stealing revenue. It was stealing trust. Customers thought they were supporting businesses like  Dependable Cleaners, Laundromax, or Tiny Bubbles] down the street, the woman who remembered how they liked their collars starched. Instead, their loyalty was being redirected to a corporate service that could outspend, outmarket, and apparently—if these allegations are true—outmaneuver the very people who built this industry.

A Wound Still Healing

What makes this even more painful is the timing. These businesses were allegedly being undermined while simultaneously struggling to survive COVID-19. When the pandemic forced closures and devastated foot traffic, many of these family-owned cleaners were fighting for their lives. And according to this lawsuit, some of them may not have even known they were also fighting against a company using their own name and reputation against them.

Why This Matters to All of Us

This isn’t just an Asian issue—though the community has clearly been hit hard. This is about every mom-and-pop business trying to compete in an economy increasingly dominated by venture-backed corporations with unlimited resources and, apparently, questionable ethics.

The lawsuit states that Rinse has since stopped this practice. But the damage to these hundreds of businesses? That can’t be undone with the flip of a switch.

The catalyst was a video posted by a diner, Cassidy Cho, who documented her experience and observed: “They put all the Asians in one corner … it’s all white people in the main seating area.” According to media reports, she said: “Another corner [was] filled with Asians too.” ([turn0news10]) That footage spread rapidly across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, reigniting conversations already simmering in immigrant and Asian American communities.

In response, Great White’s co-owners defended themselves, calling the allegations “outrageous and completely false,” insisting they never seat people based on ethnicity, and painting their restaurant as one founded on “openness, warmth, and hospitality.” ([turn0news10])

But denials alone won’t quiet the multitude of voices saying otherwise.

The Reddit Voices: Sharp, Unfiltered, and Disbelieving

On r/AsianAmerican, the discussion has been fierce. The Reddit thread, titled “LA restaurant Great White accused of segregating Asian diners,” features firsthand reactions, skepticism, and calls for accountability. 

One user wrote:

“Last time I remember being noticeably segregated was at Denny’s in the 90s, but LA has a history of pretty blatant racism in hospitality.”

— asserting that what’s happening at Great White is not an anomaly, but part of a persistent pattern. 

In other threads beyond that core post, additional testimonials emerged. One commenter in r/Asian added:

“This is a form of indirect discrimination … People with the ‘right’ look and skin color will be sat by windows … Anyone appearing undesirable will be sat in the back or in a hidden corner.”

— articulating how seating bias often hides behind vague language about aesthetics. 

That same thread also carried a scathing allegation:

“Sam Cooper the Australian owner told staff at Gran Blanco not to let too many Black people in lest the place get too trashy and ghetto.”

— a claim that, if true, suggests systemic prejudice across multiple properties. 

These statements are not fleeting complaints — they are part of a collective cry for transparency. They reflect anger, pain, and resolve. The community is not asking for explanations — it is demanding consequences.

Patterns Over Denials: Why the Claims Must Be Taken Seriously

Dismissing this as misinterpretation ignores the weight of consistency. The video evidence, combined with overlapping testimonies — from diners, former employees, and community observers — points toward more than coincidence.

• The claim that staff were told to limit “ethnic looking people” or to seat them in less visible areas is echoed across multiple reports.

• Those impacted report slower service and distinct separation — even when other sections had open seating.

• The tone of the complaints, and the outrage directed at Great White, underscores a deeper wound: that restaurants, especially in diverse cities, cannot pick and choose who gets to be seen.

It is not enough for Great White to simply reject these accusations. It must confront its own practices, policies, and culture. If there were no deliberate discriminatory practices, transparency and accountability should bolster trust — not silence it.

What Great White Owes the Community

To begin repairing trust, Great White must move beyond defensiveness. Here are minimum steps it should commit to:

1. Invite independent audits of seating logs, reservation data, and customer complaints to check for racial disparity.

2. Open the books on training and internal guidance given to staff regarding guest seating and customer appearance.

3. Offer public acknowledgment that patrons felt marginalized — even if the restaurant did not intentionally discriminate.

4. Mandate anti-bias training for all front-of-house personnel, with specific instruction on seating equity.

5. Create oversight mechanisms — perhaps a community advisory board or periodic third-party reviews.

6. Make restorative gestures — e.g. issuing public apologies, offering restorative credits or free meals to those wronged, and showcasing accountability.

If Great White truly believes in inclusivity, it must act like it. Empty statements of denial aren’t enough when lived experiences tell a different story.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just about Great White. It’s about how racism is baked into everyday interactions we often take for granted — who gets prime visibility, who is politely ignored, who is pushed into the back. The seating chart becomes a mirror of systemic bias. When multiple affected diners independently reach the same conclusion — “they always put us in one corner” — that signals something deeper than an overworked hostess or an odd layout.

The Asian American community and allies are watching closely. The question now isn’t whether Great White made a mistake — it’s whether it will take responsibility, correct course, and make systemic changes so that no diner feels segregated ever again.

This heartfelt campaign has turned Sunny Cleaners into an unlikely viral sensation, showing how authenticity, humor, and love can make even the most traditional small business thrive in the digital era.
