As the appetite for independent horror continues to grow, a new short film is set to make its mark on one of the genre’s most influential platforms. The Girl in the Street, an award-winning short from Chicago-based Swym Good Films, will premiere globally on April 13 via ALTER—a leading destination for curated horror content with a reach of nearly 3.8 million subscribers.

Following a successful festival run marked by critical acclaim, the film’s digital debut signals a significant moment for both its creators and the evolving landscape of independent genre storytelling.

Watch Trailer

A Platform Built for Distinctive Horror Voices

Known for spotlighting bold, original work, ALTER has become a key platform for emerging filmmakers in the horror space. Its presence extends beyond YouTube, reaching audiences across Samsung TV+, Tubi, Plex, The CW, DIRECTV, LG Channels, and Sling FreeStream—offering global visibility that few independent projects can access.

For the team behind The Girl in the Street, the partnership represents more than distribution—it’s an opportunity to connect with an audience that actively seeks out inventive and visually driven horror.

A Story That Explores Morality Under Pressure

At the center of the film is Malachi, portrayed by Shawn Roundtree Jr., a man forced into an emotional and moral crossroads.

After accepting a life-changing job opportunity, Malachi leaves behind his dying younger sister and relocates to a remote town. What begins as a fresh start quickly shifts into something far more unsettling. A disturbing encounter with a moving truck driver sets the tone, but it is the appearance of a bloodied, masked woman on a quiet dirt road that transforms the narrative into a chilling psychological dilemma.

Faced with the choice to help or remain safely inside, Malachi must confront the limits of his own humanity. The film uses this moment to probe deeper questions—about morality, survival, and the hidden tensions beneath seemingly ordinary communities.

A Creative Team Pushing Genre Boundaries

The film is directed by the acclaimed Black filmmaking duo Chris Paicely and Miles August, known collectively as Chris & Miles. Written by Paicely, the project reflects their growing reputation for blending social commentary with genre storytelling.

The cast also includes Whitney Blair Masters, D’Andra Laneé, and Chris Anthony, with a special cameo from horror icon Heather Langenkamp—a presence that connects the film to the legacy of classic horror while reinforcing its contemporary voice.

Behind the camera, cinematographer Lana Mattice brings a distinct visual tone, supported by post-production work from industry leaders Fotokem and Esho Sound. The original score by Pablo Fuu further enhances the film’s atmospheric tension, creating an immersive experience that lingers beyond its runtime.

From Festival Acclaim to Global Release

Before its ALTER premiere, The Girl in the Street built strong momentum on the festival circuit, earning recognition for its storytelling and visual execution.

The transition from festivals to a global platform marks a natural progression for the film—one that allows it to reach a wider audience while maintaining its independent spirit.

For Paicely, the release is particularly meaningful, reflecting the culmination of a journey that began with a commitment to authentic storytelling. August echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of connecting with viewers who appreciate the depth and creativity of modern horror.

A Filmmaking Duo on the Rise

Chris & Miles have steadily established themselves as voices to watch within the genre. Their previous works, including the sci-fi short ALUS (2022) and the psychological horror film BOUND (2023), have demonstrated a willingness to experiment with form and narrative.

Their latest project, SILK, currently on the festival circuit, continues this trajectory—blending stylized visuals with psychological themes in a way that challenges conventional storytelling.

Both filmmakers bring multidisciplinary backgrounds to their work. Paicely’s experience in journalism and marketing informs his narrative approach, while August’s foundation in visual art and music contributes to the films’ distinctive aesthetic.

A New Wave of Independent Horror

The premiere of The Girl in the Street reflects a broader shift within the horror genre—one where independent creators are increasingly shaping the conversation.

Platforms like ALTER have made it possible for these voices to reach global audiences without compromising their vision. In turn, audiences are discovering stories that feel more personal, more experimental, and more reflective of contemporary themes.

Where Horror Meets Humanity

At its core, The Girl in the Street is not just about fear—it is about choice, responsibility, and the complexities of human behavior.

By placing its protagonist in a moment of moral uncertainty, the film invites viewers to question what they would do in the same situation. It is this emotional depth, combined with its atmospheric tension, that sets the film apart.

As it premieres on ALTER, The Girl in the Street arrives not only as a compelling piece of horror, but as part of a growing movement—one that is redefining what the genre can be.

In a cinematic landscape often driven by spectacle, a quieter, more introspective film is preparing to leave a lasting impression. Forastera, the feature debut from Los Angeles-based Spanish filmmaker Lucía Aleñar Iglesias, arrives as a luminous and emotionally layered ghost story—one that explores memory, loss, and the invisible threads that bind us to those we’ve loved.

Following its breakout premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the prestigious FIPRESCI Award, the film will open theatrically in the United States beginning May 29, 2026, starting in New York City at Film Forum, with additional cities to follow.

A Story Where Memory and Reality Intertwine

Set against the sun-drenched backdrop of Mallorca, Forastera follows teenager Cata, played by rising star Zoe Stein, as she spends a seemingly carefree summer at her grandparents’ home.

The film opens in a familiar rhythm—days filled with swimming in the Mediterranean, playful moments with her younger sister, and the tentative excitement of a summer romance. But this sense of ease is suddenly disrupted by the unexpected death of her grandmother, Catalina.

As grief settles over the family, Cata finds herself drawn into a more intimate and mysterious connection with her grandmother’s presence. Slipping into her clothes and surrounding herself with her belongings, she begins to experience a subtle blurring between the living and the departed.

What unfolds is not a traditional ghost story, but a quiet meditation on how memory lingers—how love, loss, and identity continue to shape us even after someone is gone.

A Breakout Performance Anchors the Film

At the center of the film is Zoe Stein, whose performance as Cata has been widely praised for its emotional depth and nuance.

Stein brings a sense of restraint and authenticity to the role, capturing the complexity of adolescence as it intersects with grief. Her portrayal reflects a delicate balance—between vulnerability and strength, curiosity and responsibility—making Cata feel both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Surrounded by a strong supporting cast including Lluís Homar, Núria Prims, Nonni Ardal, and Martina García, the film builds a layered emotional landscape that feels intimate and immersive.

A Visual Language Rooted in Stillness and Light

One of Forastera’s most defining qualities is its visual atmosphere. Cinematographer Agnès Piqué captures Mallorca with a sense of quiet beauty—where bright Mediterranean light contrasts with the emotional weight of the story.

Rather than relying on dramatic effects, the film uses stillness, composition, and natural light to create a feeling of presence. The result is a world that feels both real and slightly suspended in time, mirroring Cata’s internal experience as she navigates loss.

This minimalist approach extends to the film’s sound and score, allowing space for reflection and emotional resonance without overwhelming the narrative.

A Director to Watch

With Forastera, Lucía Aleñar Iglesias establishes herself as a distinctive new voice in international cinema.

FORASTERA director Lucía Aleñar Iglesias. Photo credit Agnès Piqué Corbera

Originally from Madrid and now based in Los Angeles, Iglesias brings a global perspective shaped by her studies at NYU and Columbia University. Her earlier short film of the same name screened at major festivals including Cannes Critics’ Week, setting the stage for this feature-length debut.

Her storytelling approach—subtle, emotionally grounded, and visually precise—signals a filmmaker deeply interested in exploring the human experience through atmosphere and nuance.

A Film That Redefines the Ghost Story

While Forastera carries the elements of a ghost story, it resists conventional genre expectations.

There are no dramatic scares or overt supernatural moments. Instead, the film focuses on the emotional reality of grief—the way absence can feel like presence, and how memory becomes a living force.

In doing so, it transforms the idea of a ghost into something more personal: a reflection of love that continues to exist beyond physical boundaries.

A Festival Favorite Finds Its Audience

After earning critical acclaim at TIFF and receiving strong praise from international critics, Forastera now arrives for its U.S. theatrical release, offering audiences a chance to experience its quiet power on the big screen.

Distributed by Grasshopper Film, a company known for championing independent and artist-driven cinema, the film is positioned to reach audiences seeking thoughtful, emotionally rich storytelling.

A Story That Lingers

At its core, Forastera is a film about transitions—between childhood and adulthood, presence and absence, memory and reality.

It invites viewers to sit with its emotions rather than rush through them, creating an experience that unfolds slowly and lingers long after the final frame.

In a world that often moves too quickly, Forastera offers something rare: a moment to pause, reflect, and feel.

In an era where film releases are often driven by algorithms and large-scale marketing campaigns, a new independent feature is taking a markedly different path—one rooted in human connection, community engagement, and lived experience. Watching Mr. Pearson is not just debuting in theaters; it is launching as a nationwide grassroots movement that challenges how films reach audiences today.

Beginning April 2026, the film embarks on a carefully curated theatrical rollout across the United States, bringing with it a deeply personal story and an equally intentional distribution strategy.

A Story Centered on Care, Memory, and Human Connection

At the heart of Watching Mr. Pearson lies an intimate and emotionally resonant narrative. The film follows two caregivers, Caroline and Miguel, as they share responsibility for Robert Pearson—a once-celebrated actor now facing the disorienting realities of cognitive decline.

While Miguel approaches caregiving through routine and structure, Caroline adopts a more imaginative method, stepping into scenes from Pearson’s past to keep him engaged. As their approaches begin to diverge, the film explores the fragile boundary between performance and reality, asking a profound question: what does it truly mean to care for someone at the edge of memory and identity?

The story unfolds with quiet intensity, offering a nuanced portrayal of caregiving that feels both personal and universally relatable.

A Cast That Brings Depth and Authenticity

Leading the film is Hugo Armstrong, whose portrayal of Robert Pearson captures both vulnerability and complexity. Known for roles in Lucky and Coherence, Armstrong delivers a performance that anchors the film’s emotional core.

He is joined by Sam Bullington, Zainab Jah, Dominika Zawada, and Luis Rizo, forming an ensemble that brings authenticity and subtlety to the narrative. Together, the cast creates a layered exploration of caregiving relationships, identity, and the human need for connection.

A Different Approach to Film Distribution

What sets Watching Mr. Pearson apart is not only its story, but how it is being shared.

Produced by Boston-based KT Pictures and Hedy Films, the film marks the first theatrical release from the creative partnership behind the SXSW-premiered Imposters. While that project showcased bold genre storytelling, Watching Mr. Pearson reflects the collective’s deeper mission—human-centered filmmaking grounded in empathy and real-world experience.

Instead of relying solely on traditional distribution channels, the team has built a grassroots strategy designed to meet audiences where they are. The rollout includes direct engagement with local theaters, partnerships with community organizations, and in-person appearances by filmmakers and cast members.

Building Community Through Cinema

The film’s release has been intentionally shaped through outreach to senior communities, healthcare professionals, and memory care organizations—groups closely connected to the film’s themes.

At the same time, the campaign extends to faith-based communities, emphasizing messages of compassion, presence, and care. This inclusive approach ensures that the film resonates across diverse audiences, creating space for conversation and reflection.

In parallel, Watching Mr. Pearson has become a point of interest within academic circles, particularly in film and media studies. Its “build it from the ground up” distribution model offers a real-time case study in how independent films can connect with audiences outside traditional systems.

As the filmmaking team explains, the goal is simple yet powerful: to create connection—whether in a theater, a classroom, or a community setting.

A Nationwide Tour That Brings Filmmakers to Audiences

Adding to the film’s unique rollout is a nationwide tour featuring in-person appearances and post-screening discussions.

Director and co-writer Dillon Bentlage, producer Brian Reilly, and co-writer/producer Simon Kienitz Kincade will attend select screenings, offering audiences the opportunity to engage directly with the creative team. Additional cast appearances in select markets further deepen the experience, transforming screenings into interactive, community-driven events.

These conversations are designed to extend the film’s impact beyond the screen, encouraging dialogue around caregiving, memory, and emotional connection.

A Theatrical Journey Across the United States

The rollout spans multiple cities and regions, beginning in Connecticut and expanding nationwide, with stops in Massachusetts, Delaware, Virginia, New Mexico, Florida, Louisiana, New York, California, and beyond.

Rather than a single, centralized premiere, the film’s journey unfolds gradually—mirroring its philosophy of building meaningful connections one community at a time.

A New Model for Independent Cinema

Supported by RBL Films & PR, led by Ry Levey, the release reflects a growing shift in how independent films can reach audiences. By prioritizing engagement over scale and authenticity over automation, Watching Mr. Pearson offers a compelling alternative to traditional distribution models.

It is a reminder that cinema, at its core, is a shared experience—one that thrives on connection, conversation, and emotional resonance.

Where Film Becomes a Shared Experience

As Watching Mr. Pearson travels across the country, it carries with it more than a story—it carries an approach.

One that values presence over promotion, dialogue over distance, and community over convention.

In doing so, it not only tells a story about care and connection—it lives it.

Following its world premiere at True/False Film Fest 2026 and European premiere at CPH:DOX 2026, the film is quickly gaining attention for its unconventional approach and deeply immersive visual language.

A Documentary That Blurs the Line Between Art and Science

At its core, Phenomena is described as a “psychedelic odyssey into the fabric of the universe,” guided by Gatti himself through a series of practical, in-camera experiments. Rather than relying on visual effects, the film captures its imagery entirely through real-world processes, revealing nature’s inner workings in ways that feel both intimate and expansive.

The result is a hyper-real visual experience that moves fluidly from microscopic to cosmic scales, inviting viewers to witness the interconnected systems that define existence. It is a film that transforms observation into something cinematic—where scientific curiosity becomes a form of storytelling.

A Sensory Experience Elevated by Music

The film’s immersive quality is further enhanced by a carefully curated soundscape. Featuring music from internationally acclaimed composer Nils Frahm, alongside an original electronic score by Rival Consoles, Phenomena creates a layered audio-visual experience that is both meditative and emotionally resonant.

Together, the visuals and music form a hypnotic rhythm, drawing audiences into a space where science is not only understood but felt. The collaboration between image and sound elevates the documentary beyond traditional formats, positioning it as a sensory journey as much as a narrative one.

Josef Gatti’s Vision Comes to Life

Writer, director, and producer Josef Gatti brings a multidisciplinary approach to the project, combining filmmaking with experimental artistry. Based in Melbourne, Gatti has built a reputation for crafting visually innovative work that merges creative expression with scientific exploration.

Phenomena marks his first feature-length documentary, building on a previously successful multi-platform project of the same name that was broadcast in Australia and screened internationally. The earlier iteration was recognized as one of the standout Australian programs of its time, setting the stage for this more expansive cinematic version.

Through this project, Gatti continues to push the boundaries of how documentary storytelling can be experienced—inviting audiences to engage with science through emotion, curiosity, and visual wonder.

A Collaboration with Leading Documentary Voices

The film is produced in collaboration with Sandbox Films, an Academy Award–nominated studio known for supporting artist-driven documentaries that explore science and human inquiry.

Executive producers Jessica Harrop, Caitlin Mae Burke, and Jad Abumrad bring a wealth of experience to the project, reinforcing its position within a growing movement of documentaries that aim to make complex ideas accessible through creative storytelling.

With funding support from organizations including Screen Australia and VicScreen, Phenomena reflects a global effort to elevate science storytelling within the cinematic space.

A Timely Reflection on Curiosity and Connection

Beyond its technical achievements, Phenomena arrives at a moment when audiences are increasingly seeking deeper, more meaningful connections with the world around them.

The film invites viewers to pause and reflect on the fundamental systems that sustain life—from elemental forces to cosmic structures—while emphasizing humanity’s place within that larger framework. It is a reminder that even the smallest natural processes hold extraordinary complexity and beauty.

Rather than presenting science as distant or abstract, Phenomena brings it closer, encouraging a sense of wonder that feels both personal and universal.

A New Direction for Documentary Storytelling

With its combination of experimental visuals, immersive sound design, and philosophical inquiry, Phenomena represents a shift in how documentaries can be experienced.

It moves away from traditional formats and toward something more sensory and experiential—where the audience is not just informed, but transported. By blending disciplines and embracing creative risk, the film opens new possibilities for how stories about science and nature can be told.

As it continues its festival journey, Phenomena stands out as a project that challenges expectations while offering a deeply engaging and visually unforgettable experience—one that invites audiences to see the world, quite literally, in a new light.

Canada’s independent film scene continues to push creative boundaries, and a new collaboration is set to bring an ambitious genre project to life. Andromedia Distribution has officially announced that acclaimed filmmaking duo The Butler Brothers will direct its upcoming feature film, Storm Warning—a bold, genre-blending production currently in pre-production.

Known for their unconventional storytelling and fearless approach to filmmaking, The Butler Brothers have earned a reputation within Canadian cinema for delivering projects that challenge expectations while remaining deeply engaging. Their involvement signals a strong creative direction for Storm Warning, a film that aims to merge horror, satire, and social commentary into a distinctive cinematic experience.

A Genre Film with a Provocative Edge

Described as an allegorical tale, Storm Warning centers on the unexpected invasion of Nazi vampires in a small Canadian town—an intentionally provocative premise that blends horror with layered thematic elements.

The project is envisioned as a homage to the genre films of the 1980s, drawing inspiration from that era’s bold storytelling while introducing a contemporary narrative perspective. By combining classic horror tropes with dark humor and underlying social commentary, the film aims to resonate with both genre enthusiasts and modern audiences.

The Butler Brothers’ signature style—often defined by its daring concepts and thought-provoking execution—positions them as a natural fit for a project that seeks to challenge conventional genre storytelling.

A Strategic Collaboration with Andromedia Distribution

For Andromedia Distribution, the partnership represents a significant step in advancing its mission to develop commercially viable Canadian cinema with global appeal.

Bill Dever, President of Andromedia Distribution, expressed strong confidence in the collaboration, emphasizing the alignment between the filmmakers’ creative vision and the company’s goals. He noted that The Butler Brothers bring a fresh perspective and a deep passion for genre filmmaking, qualities that are expected to shape Storm Warning into a memorable and distinctive project.

Producer Sam Dever echoed this sentiment, highlighting the film’s potential to connect with both audiences and investors. With a compelling concept and a creative team known for pushing boundaries, the project is positioned as a promising addition to Canada’s evolving genre film landscape.

A Return to Bold, Character-Driven Genre Storytelling

At its core, Storm Warning reflects a broader trend within independent cinema—a return to bold, character-driven storytelling that embraces risk and originality.

The film’s blend of horror, satire, and social reflection aims to capture the spirit of classic genre filmmaking while offering a narrative that feels timely and relevant. By revisiting the stylistic energy of 1980s cinema, the project seeks to balance nostalgia with innovation, creating an experience that appeals across generations of filmgoers.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in mid-May, marking the next phase in the film’s development as Andromedia Distribution continues to engage with investors and strategic partners.

Supporting the Growth of Canadian Genre Cinema

Beyond the film itself, Storm Warning represents a broader commitment to supporting Canadian talent and expanding the reach of the country’s film industry.

Andromedia Distribution has consistently focused on providing a platform for filmmakers who bring unique perspectives to genre storytelling. By backing projects that combine creative ambition with commercial potential, the company continues to contribute to the growth and visibility of Canadian cinema on a global stage.

With The Butler Brothers now attached to direct, Storm Warning stands as a project that embodies both creative risk and industry opportunity—an example of how independent filmmaking can continue to evolve while staying rooted in bold, original ideas.

As production moves forward, the film is already generating interest as a distinctive addition to the genre space, one that promises to deliver both entertainment and commentary in equal measure.

As global conversations around climate justice and Indigenous rights continue to intensify, a new documentary is set to bring one of Europe’s most urgent and complex conflicts to North American audiences. Let Our Mountains Live, directed by acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Håvard Bustnes, will make its North American premiere at the 2026 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, running from April 23 to May 3 in Toronto.

Screening at the TIFF Lightbox on April 24 and 25, the film arrives at a moment when questions surrounding renewable energy, land rights, and cultural preservation are more relevant than ever. Bustnes, along with Sámi filmmaker, writer, and producer Johannes Vang, will be present for both screenings, offering audiences an opportunity to engage directly with the voices behind this deeply human story.

A Story Rooted in Land, Identity, and Survival

At the heart of Let Our Mountains Live is a decades-long struggle led by South Sámi reindeer herders Sissel Stormo Holtan and Terje Haugen, who are fighting to protect their ancestral grazing lands in the Fosen mountains of Norway.

Their land, essential not only for livelihood but for cultural survival, has become the site of Europe’s largest onshore wind power development. While the project represents a significant step toward renewable energy, it also raises a difficult and deeply personal question: what happens when sustainability efforts come at the cost of Indigenous communities?

The film follows Holtan and Haugen as they navigate years of legal battles, activism, and resistance, capturing both the emotional and political weight of their fight.

A Landmark Victory—and an Unresolved Reality

One of the most striking elements of the documentary is its focus on a historic legal victory. Norway’s Supreme Court ruled that the wind farm violates Sámi human rights—a decision that should have marked a turning point.

Yet, despite the ruling, the turbines remain standing.

This contradiction forms the emotional and narrative core of the film, exposing a broader crisis within systems of governance. When justice is recognized but not enforced, what does accountability truly look like?

Let Our Mountains Live does not offer easy answers. Instead, it invites viewers into the ongoing reality faced by the Sámi people—one where legal recognition does not always translate into meaningful change.

A Movement Amplified by Youth and Global Attention

The case sparked widespread protests led by Sámi youth, drawing international attention to the intersection of climate policy, corporate interests, and Indigenous sovereignty.

Through these moments of activism, the documentary expands beyond a local conflict, revealing a global tension that continues to shape conversations around environmental progress. The film asks a question that resonates far beyond Norway: can the transition to renewable energy be considered truly sustainable if it compromises cultural identity and ancestral land?

By capturing both intimate personal stories and large-scale protests, the film balances emotional depth with political urgency.

Authentic Storytelling Through Sámi Collaboration

A defining strength of Let Our Mountains Live lies in its collaborative approach. The film was developed in close partnership with Sámi creators, including co-writer and producer Johannes Vang and Finnish Sámi filmmaker Kati Eriksen.

This collaboration ensures that the story is told with authenticity and cultural sensitivity, allowing Sámi voices to remain central to the narrative. Rather than observing from the outside, the film becomes a platform for lived experience, offering audiences a more nuanced and respectful understanding of the issues at stake.

A Director Known for Powerful Documentary Work

Director Håvard Bustnes brings more than two decades of experience in documentary filmmaking to the project. Known for films such as Golden Dawn Girls, Two Raging Grannies, and Name of the Game, Bustnes has built a reputation for tackling complex subjects with depth and clarity.

His work has screened at major international festivals and earned prestigious honors, including Norway’s Amanda Award and Gullruten Award. With Let Our Mountains Live, Bustnes continues his tradition of exploring social and political themes through compelling human stories.

A Timely Premiere at Hot Docs 2026

The film’s premiere at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival places it within one of North America’s most respected platforms for documentary storytelling.

Screenings will take place at TIFF Cinema 4 in Toronto on April 24 at 3:00 PM and April 25 at 8:15 PM, offering festival audiences an opportunity to experience the film during its highly anticipated debut.

A Story That Extends Beyond Borders

Ultimately, Let Our Mountains Live is more than a regional story—it is a reflection of a global moment.

As nations push toward renewable energy solutions, the film challenges viewers to consider the broader implications of progress. It asks whether sustainability can truly exist without justice, and whether development can move forward without erasing the communities that have long stewarded the land.

With its North American premiere, the documentary brings a critical conversation to the forefront—one that continues to shape the future of environmental policy, human rights, and cultural preservation worldwide.

In giving voice to those at the center of this struggle, Let Our Mountains Live reminds audiences that some of the most important stories are not just about change, but about who is asked to bear its cost.

A Growing Platform for Independent Film

Since its debut in Mexico City, Sundance Film Festival: CDMX has steadily grown into an important platform for international independent cinema in Latin America. The festival offers local audiences a chance to experience acclaimed films that premiered earlier in the year at the Sundance Film Festival, alongside special screenings and events designed to deepen the theatrical experience.

For the 2026 edition, Cinépolis Diana will once again serve as the festival’s main venue. Additional screenings will take place across several locations in the city, including Cinépolis Mitikah, Cinépolis Oasis Coyoacán, Cinépolis Plaza Carso, and Cinépolis VIP Miyana. By expanding across multiple theaters, the festival continues its mission of making independent storytelling accessible to a broader audience throughout Mexico City.

Eugene Hernandez, Director of the Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming, expressed enthusiasm for returning to the city for a third year.

“We are excited to be planning another edition of Sundance Film Festival: CDMX. Our 2026 festival in April will again showcase a selection of new films from around the world for Mexico City moviegoers,” Hernandez said. “We have enjoyed getting to know CDMX audiences the past two years and our programming team is curating a selection that will engage and entertain. We hope lovers of independent storytelling will join us next month for this third year of Sundance Film Festival: CDMX.”

Connecting Global Stories With Local Audiences

For Cinépolis, the partnership reflects a broader commitment to creating cultural experiences that go beyond traditional moviegoing. The festival encourages dialogue, collaboration, and creative exchange between filmmakers, audiences, and the wider artistic community.

Alejandro Ramírez, CEO of Cinépolis, emphasized the importance of the festival as a space where diverse perspectives can come together through film.

“From Cinépolis’ point of view, the festival represents a way of experiencing cinema as a comprehensive experience that opens dialogue and encompasses different visions of the world and its current context,” Ramírez said. “Sundance Film Festival: CDMX is a platform that connects independent talent with new audiences.”

He added that the third edition aims not only to showcase international cinema but also to strengthen Mexico’s local creative ecosystem by encouraging conversations and new collaborations within the film community.

A Curated Selection of Global Independent Cinema

The 2026 program will be specially curated by Sundance Film Festival programmers and will feature a selection of films originally presented at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. These titles will be complemented by special screenings and festival activities designed to enrich the in-theater experience.

While the full lineup has not yet been announced, organizers promise a selection that reflects the diversity, creativity, and bold storytelling that have defined Sundance for decades.

For audiences in Mexico City, the festival represents a rare opportunity to experience globally recognized independent films on the big screen, often accompanied by conversations and events that deepen engagement with the stories behind them.

Additional details about the festival’s programming, screenings, and events will be revealed in the coming weeks. Updates will be available through Cinépolis’ official platforms and website.

Cinépolis: A Global Leader in Cinema Experiences

Founded more than 50 years ago in Morelia, Michoacán, Cinépolis has grown into one of the world’s leading cinema companies. Today, the company operates in 18 countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, managing 896 cinema complexes and 6,837 fully digital screens.

Cinépolis is recognized as a global leader in ticket sales and among the largest cinema chains in the world outside the United States. After winning the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the film is now preparing to reach audiences in theaters beginning April 24.

Set against the wintry backdrop of Montreal, Two Women follows neighbors Violette and Florence, two mothers who find themselves grappling with the monotony that can quietly settle into adult life. Parenthood, routines, and expectations have left them feeling disconnected from the spark that once made life feel vibrant. When the two bond over their shared sense of restlessness, their conversations take an unexpected turn toward something both playful and revealing.

Instead of accepting the emotional stagnation surrounding them, Violette and Florence begin exploring what it might mean to reclaim their sense of joy — starting with the desires they have long ignored. As their search for excitement leads them into surprising situations, the film gradually becomes more than a story about sex or rebellion. It evolves into a reflection on the deeper emotional needs that shape relationships, identity, and the courage it takes to pursue a life that feels fully lived.

The film stars Laurence Leboeuf as Violette and Karine Gonthier-Hyndman as Florence, whose chemistry anchors the film’s balance of humor, vulnerability, and bold honesty. Supporting performances from Sophie Nélisse, Juliette Gariépy, Mani Soleymanlou, and Félix Moati add further texture to a story that moves between comedy and introspection.

Director Chloé Robichaud brings a distinctive visual approach to the project, capturing Montreal’s winter landscape on 35mm film, which lends the story a tactile warmth that contrasts beautifully with the cold surroundings. The screenplay, written by Catherine Léger, adapts her own stage play — itself a contemporary reimagining of the 1970 Quebecois classic Two Women in Gold. The result is a narrative that feels both rooted in cultural history and unmistakably modern in its perspective.

What makes Two Women resonate is its willingness to treat female desire and personal reinvention with humor and empathy rather than judgment. The film gently challenges the idea that adulthood must follow a predictable path, suggesting instead that fulfillment can take many forms — and that it’s never too late to rediscover what makes life feel exciting again.

At its heart, the film is about refusing to settle for a life defined only by obligation. Through its playful tone and emotional honesty, Two Women invites audiences to reconsider the expectations placed on relationships, motherhood, and personal happiness.

The theatrical release is being handled by Joint Venture, an independent film studio known for building collaborative release strategies that bring filmmakers, audiences, and cultural partners together. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, the company works closely with creators to design audience-focused distribution plans tailored to each film.

As Two Women arrives in theaters this spring, it carries with it the spirit that made it stand out at Sundance: bold, joyful, and unapologetically curious about what it means to live fully. The film reminds us that life rarely moves in a straight line — and that sometimes the most meaningful transformations begin with a simple decision to follow what makes us feel alive.

Instead of relying on digital effects or artificial imagery, the film captures its visuals entirely in-camera, transforming natural processes into something that feels both scientific and poetic.

Watch & Embed TEASER CLIP

The resulting imagery moves fluidly across scale — from subatomic phenomena to cosmic motion — inviting viewers to see familiar elements of the universe from entirely new perspectives. Accompanying the film’s hypnotic visuals is music from acclaimed composer Nils Frahm, alongside an original electronic score by Rival Consoles, creating a sonic environment that enhances the film’s sense of wonder.

For Gatti, the project represents the culmination of years spent observing and documenting the natural world. As he explains, the film grew out of nearly a decade of experimentation and exploration, searching for moments where art and science intersect in unexpected ways. The result is not simply a documentary about nature, but a cinematic experience that encourages audiences to feel its complexity rather than merely understand it.

Producer Rob Innes describes the collaboration with Gatti as a creative journey shaped by the filmmaker’s unique perspective and visual language. Through meticulous cinematography and practical experimentation, Gatti reveals details of the world that are often invisible in everyday life.

That sense of discovery also resonated with the team at Sandbox Films. Executive Director Jessica Harrop describes the project as an audio-visual experience unlike anything she had seen before — one that aims to transport audiences through both sound and image.

Industry supporters have also highlighted the film’s unusual blend of scientific inquiry and artistic imagination. Screen Australia’s Head of Documentary Richard Huddleston noted that PHENOMENA expands the possibilities of documentary filmmaking by combining scientific observation with creative interpretation, creating a work that feels both intellectually engaging and visually explosive.

The film marks a major milestone for Melbourne-based filmmaker Josef Gatti, who wrote, directed, produced, shot, edited, and narrated the project. It builds upon an earlier multi-platform version of Phenomena that was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and screened internationally at festivals and immersive exhibition spaces. That earlier series was recognized by The Guardian as the second-best Australian series of 2021.

Behind the scenes, the feature-length documentary brings together an international creative team. Alongside Gatti and producer Rob Innes, the film includes contributions from co-writer and co-producer Joseph Nizeti, editor Johanna Scott, cinematographer Martine Wolff, sound designer Pip Atherstone-Reid, and art director Pernell Marsden, with support from Screen Australia and VicScreen.

PHENOMENA is produced by Gatti and Mashup Pictures, with principal funding from Sandbox Films and Screen Australia. The project continues Sandbox Films’ mission of supporting artist-driven documentaries that explore scientific ideas through creativity and storytelling.

As the film prepares to debut on the international festival stage, its creators hope audiences will approach it not simply as a scientific documentary but as an invitation to rediscover the beauty of the natural world. Through light, motion, and sound, PHENOMENA suggests that the universe still holds endless mysteries — and that sometimes the most powerful way to explore them is through curiosity, patience, and a willingness to look a little closer.

Some films refuse to stay comfortably within a single genre. Instead, they move between humor, darkness, and emotion in ways that feel unpredictable and strangely compelling. That spirit defines Dead Lover, the new feature from filmmaker Grace Glowicki, which arrives in Canadian theaters on April 3rd.

Directed by Glowicki and co-written with Ben Petrie, the film blends horror and comedy into a story that explores love, grief, and obsession with an offbeat sensibility. At its center is a lonely gravedigger whose life takes an unexpected turn when she finally meets the man she believes could be her soulmate. Their whirlwind romance, however, ends abruptly when he tragically drowns at sea.

Unable to accept the loss, the gravedigger turns to increasingly bizarre and desperate scientific experiments in an attempt to bring him back. What begins as an act of mourning soon spirals into something stranger and darker, as her determination to resurrect the man she loves leads to consequences that are both unsettling and unexpectedly tender.

Critics have already taken notice of the film’s unusual tone and handmade aesthetic. RogerEbert.com described the project as “a looney, earnestly delirious dark romantic film with a handmade quality,” highlighting its commitment to an unconventional storytelling style. The Los Angeles Times praised Glowicki’s on-screen presence, noting that she is “so electric she even zaps herself with lightning.” Meanwhile, Dread Central called the film “a crunchy, stylish, and radical shadow play centered on the classical themes of love, death, and transformation.”

Glowicki and Petrie both star in the film, bringing a collaborative energy to the story that extends beyond the script. The project was produced by Yona Strauss, Ben Petrie, and Grace Glowicki, with executive producers Rhianon Jones, Tristan Scott-Behrends, Matthew Miller, Lexi Tannenholtz, and Olivia Niuewland supporting the production. The 83-minute feature is distributed by Cartuna x DWECK, continuing the company’s commitment to distinctive independent cinema.

GRACE GLOWICKI

For Glowicki, Dead Lover represents the next chapter in a filmmaking career already defined by bold and unconventional work. Her debut feature Tito premiered at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, where it received the Adam Yauch Hornblower Award, recognizing a filmmaker whose work remains uniquely original and unconcerned with industry expectations. Critic Richard Brody of The New Yorker went so far as to call the film “an instant classic of acting.”

In addition to directing, Glowicki has built a strong reputation as a performer in independent cinema. She has appeared in films such as Strawberry Mansion (Sundance 2021), Until Branches Bend (TIFF 2022, SXSW 2023), Booger (Fantasia 2023), and The Heirloom (Rotterdam 2024). Earlier in her career, she received a Special Jury Award for Outstanding Performance at Sundance for the short film Her Friend Adam.

Across these projects, Glowicki has developed a style that often blends emotional vulnerability with a sense of playful chaos. Her films tend to occupy spaces where comedy and discomfort coexist, inviting audiences to experience stories that feel both raw and strangely poetic.

With Dead Lover, Glowicki leans fully into that creative territory. The film embraces elements of horror and romance while maintaining a theatrical, almost handmade visual texture that mirrors the emotional intensity of its story. It is a project that treats love not as something neat or predictable, but as a force capable of driving people toward both tenderness and madness.

As the film reaches theaters across Canada, audiences will have the chance to encounter a work that resists easy categorization. Part horror comedy, part unconventional love story, Dead Lover ultimately reflects Glowicki’s ongoing fascination with characters who are messy, obsessive, and deeply human — even when their choices take them into the most unexpected places.
