Guests enjoyed a popular hand-roll bar with spicy ahi tuna, snow crab, and tempura shrimp, alongside refined offerings such as caviar truffle bites, black-and-blue ribeye crostini, French onion tarts, vegan cucumber bites, and Mediterranean-style chicken skewers finished with tzatziki and aged pomegranate glaze.

Honoring Stories of Redemption and Service

The heart of the evening lay in the Hero Awards, recognizing individuals whose actions embodied courage, compassion, and transformation.

Gabriel Aguilar was honored for his extraordinary journey of redemption through service. Sentenced to prison at 18, Aguilar chose a new path and became a wildland firefighter while incarcerated. During the Pacific Palisades fires, he served three weeks on the front lines across Topanga Canyon, Malibu, and Brentwood. Now rebuilding his own life after his release in November 2025, Aguilar is preparing to enter fire academy training later this year, standing as a powerful example of accountability and hope.

Active Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters Andrew Mott and Tony Vedecia were recognized for their bravery during the Malibu fires. Among the first on scene, they risked their lives to protect homes and families, including that of entrepreneur Blake Mallen, who shared a heartfelt video message thanking first responders and was also honored for using his platform to raise awareness during the crisis.

Hope Rising From Tragedy

One of the most emotional moments of the night came from Grayson Roberts, an 11-year-old blind drummer whose performance captured the spirit of Out of the Ashes. After losing his home in the fires, Grayson turned loss into purpose through his nonprofit, Grayson’s View, supporting other special-needs children navigating disaster recovery.

Chef Robert Duvall and philanthropist Kristin Martin were also honored for mobilizing more than 25 chefs across Orange County, serving over 20,000 meals across a ten-week period to firefighters, evacuees, and displaced families during the Los Angeles fires.

Community, Leadership, And Lasting Impact

The Mission Project’s partnership with the Los Angeles Dream Center was highlighted by remarks from Pastor Matthew Barnett, who was recognized for his frontline leadership and rapid-response efforts supporting wildfire-impacted families.

Representing the California State Treasurer’s Office, Dr. Kayte Susse presented recognition certificates to individuals including Branden Williams, Mauricio Umansky, and Tristan Hamm, each honored for extraordinary service—from guiding homeowners through recovery, to combating misinformation, to rescuing animals during the fires. Dr. Susse also formally recognized Erik Rock and The Mission Project for their continued commitment to rebuilding communities.

Mark B. Barron, celebrated for his inventive vision and commitment to philanthropy, is unveiling an exquisite series of handcrafted luxury train cases inspired by the legendary John Jacob Astor IV. Astor, the famed American financier, investor, author, and real estate developer, perished aboard the Titanic in 1912, leaving behind an enduring legacy of elegance and refinement.

During his lifetime, Astor was known for traveling with distinguished Asprey train cases that reflected the grace and sophistication of the era. His final moments aboard the Titanic became legendary as he placed his fiancée and other passengers into lifeboats, refused a seat for himself, and famously requested a martini, declaring his intent to meet his fate like a gentleman.

Barron’s new collection channels this timeless spirit of opulence. Each train case, valued between $6,000 and $11,000, is produced in extremely limited numbers. Select recipients, whom Barron refers to as “iconic givers,” will receive heirloom pieces engraved with their family name in sterling silver, symbolizing legacy and distinction.

In a business world he views as divided between takers and givers, Barron has chosen to honor the latter. One third of the proceeds from every case sold will be directed to select charitable organizations. A physical donation check is placed inside each case to create a tangible act of giving.

“True luxury isn’t just about what you own,” Barron says. “It’s about what you give back. These cases pay tribute to history, craftsmanship, and generosity.”

Barron’s new satellite office at the historic Chateau Colline on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, California, will serve as the creative hub for the project. His inspiration for this endeavor was sparked after seeing Louis Vuitton wrap its New York and Paris building exteriors to resemble grand train cases, a striking reminder that the elegance of travel’s golden age still resonates today.

Through this rare fusion of artistry, heritage, and philanthropy, Barron aims to ensure his luxury train cases do more than capture attention. They will provide meaningful support to charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society and Stand Up To Cancer, while celebrating a storied era of style and generosity.

Supporters enjoyed an exclusive night of excitement and goodwill on the 50-yard line of SoFi Stadium. The state-of-the-art facility, which holds over 70,000 people, was transformed into an incredible evening of family fun for nearly 1,000 guests, including 100 volunteers.

Red Carpet and Star-Studded Guests

The gala kicked off in the ultra-exclusive SoFi Social Club, where guests like Chris and Anel Lopez Gorham, AnnaLynne McCord and Danny Cipriani, J. August Richards and Joshua Gbor, Miss India Pooja Batra, and Mario Lopez, who hosted the gala, walked the red carpet with LuskinOIC donors, community partners, and patient ambassadors.

Parade of Champions and Ceremonial Highlights

DJ Asha kept the crowd dancing until the Parade of Champions, led by LuskinOIC Ambassador and 2024 Paralympian Ezra Frech, and LuskinOIC Ambassador and archery champion Aria Easter, who lit Olympic torches to open the ceremony. Dignitaries, including Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CD 37) and Councilmember Curren D. Price Jr. (CD 9), highlighted LuskinOIC’s exceptional work over its 113-year history.

Mario Lopez and the Unique Mission of LuskinOIC

Two-time Emmy winner Mario Lopez shared, “LuskinOIC is the largest pediatric orthopaedic program in LA County. What makes LuskinOIC unique is their focus on caring for underserved kids; 85% of their children are underinsured and 75% are children of color. With UCLA doctors at the helm, LuskinOIC levels the playing field so ALL kids have access to quality healthcare.”

Awards and Recognitions

Football legend and CBS sportscaster Jim Hill accepted the Community Inspiration Award on behalf of the Los Angeles Chargers, presented by UCLA Health President Johnese Spisso and Dr. Nick Bernthal, chair of UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Gabriela Arvizu, President of Students Runs LA, accepted the 2024 Power of Partnership Award on behalf of the youth empowerment organization.

Historic $50 Million Estate Gift Announcement

LuskinOIC Vice President Michael Sullivan and surprise guest, legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer, made the organization’s largest and most consequential announcement in its history – a $50 million estate gift from long-time benefactors and philanthropists Meyer and Renee Luskin. The stadium exploded into applause as yellow and blue streamers fell from the sky. Meyer Luskin stated, “Renee and I wish to thank all of you for your kind and loving support and for this great endeavor and wonderful institution.” Michael Sullivan added, “This is the largest donation in the nation this year for an organization of our size, and it will ensure long-term sustainability for LuskinOIC.”

Theme: ‘Sports Medicine: Heal Champions, Fuel Athletes’

“This year’s theme, ‘Sports Medicine: Heal Champions, Fuel Athletes,’ raised funds to help children while honoring the many champions of the LuskinOIC community, including our donors, dedicated community partners, patients, pediatric specialists, and staff,” stated LuskinOIC President and CEO Dr. Anthony Scaduto. “This could not be done without our generous sponsors, including the Chadha Jonovic Family, Las Amigas de Las Lomas, La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild, the Han Family, Charitable Children’s Guild, Las Madrecitas, Clear Channel, the Zytko Family, the Ehrlich Family, the Burcham Family, and UCLA Health.”

For 45 years, ArtsConnection has been a pivotal force in arts education within New York City public schools. Rachel Watts, Executive Director of ArtsConnection, shared how the organization has evolved from merely bringing artists into schools for performances and workshops to establishing long-term, integrated arts curricula tailored to individual schools. This evolution has seen the expansion of programs to include career exploration opportunities in the creative industries for teens, as well as professional development workshops for educators.

Fundraising Success, ArtsConnection

This year’s fundraising event was a resounding success, raising nearly $1 million. Watts attributed this achievement to the dedication and involvement of board members. From event planning by board member David Monn to securing auction items and liquor donations, the collective efforts of the board were instrumental in reaching this milestone.

Arts in Education, ArtsConnection

The impact of ArtsConnection’s programs on students is profound. According to Watts, participating students demonstrate critical thinking, independence, creativity, and perseverance. The 15th Annual Thirst Gala was a resounding success, raising over $220,000. These funds will be used to build at least 18 new clean water wells across Kenya, Eswatini, and El Salvador. These projects will have a life-changing impact, providing access to clean water for thousands of people, empowering communities, and promoting better health outcomes.

A Celebration of Progress, A Call to Action

The Thirst Project’s 15th Annual Gala was a night of celebration, but it also served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing water crisis. Over 785 million people globally lack access to clean water, a basic human right. The Thirst Project remains dedicated to solving this issue, and the success of the Gala signifies the collective power of dedicated individuals like Ted Gibson and all the event’s attendees. The fight for clean water is far from over, but with continued support and fundraising efforts like the Thirst Gala, a world where everyone has access to this essential resource is within reach.

A Childhood Shaped by Compassion

Born and raised in mainland China, Bonnie’s early years were shaped by a deep sense of empathy and compassion. Growing up in a country where economic disparities were stark, she witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by underprivileged children. It was during one fateful visit to an orphaned girl living in poverty that Bonnie’s passion for philanthropy was ignited. The sight of the young girl, barefoot and playing in the mud, left an indelible mark on Bonnie’s heart and sparked a lifelong desire to make a difference in the lives of children like her.

A Dream of Philanthropy

From a young age, Bonnie harbored a dream of becoming a philanthropist. Inspired by her mother’s acts of kindness and generosity, she envisioned a future where she could empower underprivileged children through education and opportunity.

However, Bonnie believed that philanthropy was something reserved for the wealthy and influential. It wasn’t until later in life, guided by the wisdom of her mentor, Lisa Greer, that Bonnie realized the power of taking action in any capacity, regardless of financial status.

Thus, the seed for the American Born Chinese Foundation was planted—a nonprofit dedicated to promoting bilingual education and cultural inclusion among Chinese-American children.

Filling a Void in Bilingual Literature

Central to the mission of the American Born Chinese Foundation is the promotion of bilingual literature that reflects the experiences of multicultural children. Recognizing a lack of resources in this space, Bonnie took matters into her own hands and authored “I Love Speaking Chinese,” a book designed to teach Chinese language skills to children in an engaging and accessible way.

Through initiatives like the GiftFreeChineseBooks program, the foundation aims to provide free copies of bilingual books to families in need, empowering children to embrace their cultural heritage and language skills.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

The journey of building the American Born Chinese Foundation has been fraught with challenges. From navigating bureaucratic hurdles to securing funding for programs, Bonnie has faced numerous obstacles along the way.

Yet, her unwavering determination and commitment to her cause have propelled her forward, inspiring others to join her in creating positive change. Despite the setbacks, Bonnie remains steadfast in her belief that every child deserves access to quality education and resources, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Professional Background

Bonnie Hyde’s professional journey reflects a remarkable evolution driven by a desire for personal fulfillment and social impact. Initially following a conventional path, Bonnie pursued a degree in accounting, a choice often typical for many Asian students. She navigated the corporate world, working for traditional accounting firms alongside seasoned professionals.

However, after owning a taxation business and experiencing a midlife crisis, Bonnie embarked on a transformative path. Driven by a passion for education and psychology, she pursued a master’s degree in educational psychology and transitioned into the role of a preschool teacher. This career shift allowed Bonnie to channel her expertise into nurturing young minds, fostering a love for learning, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children—a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and commitment to personal growth.

Spotlight on Our Stars:

• Roger Lundblade: The ultimate auctioneer and voice of the night.
• LeVar Burton: A true legend, whose generosity knows no bounds. Spending time with him was a dream come true.

The ambiance was set by the melodious Tara Parham, whose angelic voice uplifted everyone present.

Honoring the Champions:

• Lisa Guerrero: Recognized with the ILF Light of Hope Award for her groundbreaking work with Inside Edition, shedding light on child trafficking during major sporting events.
• Randy Burton, J.D., Hon. Litt.D.: A child advocate since the 1980s, he was humorously teased as LeVar’s cousin. He too was honored with the Light of Hope Award.
• Chief Criminal Investigator Kevin Atkins: A real-life hero from South Carolina, arresting predators and rescuing children. He received our final Light of Hope Award.

The awards segued into a thrilling live auction. Memorable moments included LeVar offering a lunch date, Greg Grunberg from The Action Figures auctioning studio time, and the heartfelt contribution of a painting by Rosey D’Angelo, who shared the deep meaning behind her artwork.

Our “Fund a Case” segment was deeply moving. LeVar Burton and Lisa Guerrero each generously funded FIVE CASES, contributing $25,000 each. The room was filled with overwhelming generosity, raising a total of $124,848.50 to combat child exploitation.

The night was further electrified by The Action Figures, who delivered a stellar performance. Kudos to Jack Coleman, Brad Savage, Scott Grimes, Adrian Pasdar, Nick Marzock, Drew Powell, and Greg Grunberg for their outstanding show.

A week has passed, and the emotions from that night remain fresh. The love, energy, and commitment in the room were palpable.

Chief Master Sgt. Ed Schloeman, Chairman and CEO of Operation Warrior Shield commented on the aims of the organization, “Our goal is to provide specially trained, loving and supportive canine companions to veterans and first responders and their families who live with physical and emotional injuries incurred during their time in service.”  Bethann Carbone, CSO of Operation Warrior Shield explains, “We developed Operation Canine Companion because veterans are committing suicide every day. We know how important healing from trauma is. OWS’ Operation Canine Companion pets provide safety, camaraderie, unconditional acceptance, and a unique emotional support that helps reduce the stress and challenges that our heroes face every day.” 

The evening commenced with a cocktail hour and silent auction before the start of the program led by the Chairman of OWS, CMSgt (Retired) Edward Schloeman Sr. Opening the ceremony was the USMC Color Guard from 1^st Marine Corps District and an invocation by Monsignor Hilary Franco, who has had the distinction of serving six Popes. 

There were presentations on the importance of supporting the work of the charity to help reduce suicide risk amongst veterans by Paul Bucha, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.  Deputy Inspector Mark Wachter and Lt. Col. Wilem Wong of NYPD Health & Wellness discussed the challenges faced by first responders. A live auction by Auctioneer Rudy Saviano sought to raise funds to help provide trained dogs to veterans.

OWS then presented awards to the honorees of the 2022 Healing for Heroes;

Jean Shafiroff, Philanthropist and author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give.

About Jean Shafiroff:

Jean Shafiroff is a philanthropist, humanitarian, TV host, writer, and the author of the book “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give”. Jean is often referred to as “the first lady of philanthropy” by the press because of her generosity and extensive work as a volunteer fundraiser and leader in the philanthropic world. She serves on the boards of many charitable organizations and each year chairs upwards of eight different charity galas. Among the many causes she champions are those involved in women’s rights, rights of the underserved, health care, and animal welfare.

About Patricia Deshong:

Patricia Deshong joined the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation in mid-December 2021 after they reached out to her seeking an Executive Director with experience.

She is a seasoned animal nonprofit executive with several years of experience leading Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch, the largest no-kill animal shelter in Palm Beach North County.

Deshong grew the failing nonprofit from bankruptcy into a debt-free organization with a new 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility unveiled in 2020. In 2014, she established their service dog program resulting in the placement of numerous trained service dogs to Veterans.

Since joining SASF, Deshong has joined forces with Operation Warrior Shield to support the Operation Canine Companion program. In this short period, two trained rescue dogs have been placed with two deserving recipients, and funding has been raised for at least 6 more.

Deshong was listed in 2019, 2020 & 2021 as one of the 25 Most Powerful People/Leaders of Palm Beach County.
