On Saturday, January 17, the Out of the Ashes Gala, presented by The Mission Project, transformed a stunning multi-million-dollar Malibu residence into a space of reflection, gratitude, and forward momentum. With just over 200 guests in attendance, the evening brought together celebrities, civic leaders, first responders, and philanthropic advocates to honor extraordinary acts of courage while advancing a critical mission: reforming how communities recover and rebuild after disaster.

Set against sweeping ocean views, the gala struck a balance between elegance and urgency. From the red-carpet arrival to the final standing ovation, the night served as both a celebration of heroism and a call to action for meaningful policy change that ensures families are not left displaced for years after catastrophe strikes.

An Evening Designed With Purpose

Guests were welcomed into the home for a thoughtfully curated silent auction showcasing an impressive range of luxury and celebrity contributions. Highlights included music memorabilia from Taylor Swift and Ozzy Osbourne, signed sports items from Tom Brady and LeBron James, exclusive Los Angeles Kings collectibles, and a coveted luxury trip to Cortina. Each item reflected the generosity of contributors and the collective commitment to supporting long-term recovery efforts.

Culinary experiences were equally elevated. Acclaimed chef Robert Duvall, founder of Duvall’s Dishes, curated an interactive dining experience featuring tray-passed bites and chef-driven stations throughout the property. Guests enjoyed a popular hand-roll bar with spicy ahi tuna, snow crab, and tempura shrimp, alongside refined offerings such as caviar truffle bites, black-and-blue ribeye crostini, French onion tarts, vegan cucumber bites, and Mediterranean-style chicken skewers finished with tzatziki and aged pomegranate glaze.

A Stage Like No Other

One of the most striking visual elements of the night was the home’s pool, transformed into a dramatic stage with custom plexiglass flooring. This unique setting hosted the evening’s awards, keynote addresses, and live performances, including a moving set by Grammy-nominated artist Andy Grammer, whose music added emotional depth and unity to the event.

Taking the stage, Erik Rock, founder of The Mission Project, outlined the organization’s ambitious 2026 ballot initiative, aimed at reforming post-disaster rebuilding processes. Rock emphasized the urgent need for streamlined permitting, accountability, and policies that allow families to return home faster after losing everything. His message was clear: recovery should not be an endurance test for survivors.

Facing Adversity With Courage

Keynote speaker Jenn Drummond, a world-record-holding mountaineer and the first woman to complete the Seven Summits, reinforced the evening’s message of perseverance. Drawing parallels between climbing the world’s tallest mountains and rebuilding after disaster, she reminded the audience that even the most overwhelming challenges are overcome through resilience, intention, and steady forward steps.

Honoring Stories of Redemption and Service

The heart of the evening lay in the Hero Awards, recognizing individuals whose actions embodied courage, compassion, and transformation.

Gabriel Aguilar was honored for his extraordinary journey of redemption through service. Sentenced to prison at 18, Aguilar chose a new path and became a wildland firefighter while incarcerated. During the Pacific Palisades fires, he served three weeks on the front lines across Topanga Canyon, Malibu, and Brentwood. Now rebuilding his own life after his release in November 2025, Aguilar is preparing to enter fire academy training later this year, standing as a powerful example of accountability and hope.

Active Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters Andrew Mott and Tony Vedecia were recognized for their bravery during the Malibu fires. Among the first on scene, they risked their lives to protect homes and families, including that of entrepreneur Blake Mallen, who shared a heartfelt video message thanking first responders and was also honored for using his platform to raise awareness during the crisis.

Hope Rising From Tragedy

One of the most emotional moments of the night came from Grayson Roberts, an 11-year-old blind drummer whose performance captured the spirit of Out of the Ashes. After losing his home in the fires, Grayson turned loss into purpose through his nonprofit, Grayson’s View, supporting other special-needs children navigating disaster recovery.

Chef Robert Duvall and philanthropist Kristin Martin were also honored for mobilizing more than 25 chefs across Orange County, serving over 20,000 meals across a ten-week period to firefighters, evacuees, and displaced families during the Los Angeles fires.

Community, Leadership, And Lasting Impact

The Mission Project’s partnership with the Los Angeles Dream Center was highlighted by remarks from Pastor Matthew Barnett, who was recognized for his frontline leadership and rapid-response efforts supporting wildfire-impacted families.

Representing the California State Treasurer’s Office, Dr. Kayte Susse presented recognition certificates to individuals including Branden Williams, Mauricio Umansky, and Tristan Hamm, each honored for extraordinary service—from guiding homeowners through recovery, to combating misinformation, to rescuing animals during the fires. Dr. Susse also formally recognized Erik Rock and The Mission Project for their continued commitment to rebuilding communities.

A Call To Action

With more than 500 hero nominations submitted by the public, the Out of the Ashes Gala underscored the depth of courage within the community. As the evening concluded, one message resonated clearly: when compassion, leadership, and policy unite, hope does more than survive—it rises.

Mark B. Barron, celebrated for his inventive vision and commitment to philanthropy, is unveiling an exquisite series of handcrafted luxury train cases inspired by the legendary John Jacob Astor IV. Astor, the famed American financier, investor, author, and real estate developer, perished aboard the Titanic in 1912, leaving behind an enduring legacy of elegance and refinement.

During his lifetime, Astor was known for traveling with distinguished Asprey train cases that reflected the grace and sophistication of the era. His final moments aboard the Titanic became legendary as he placed his fiancée and other passengers into lifeboats, refused a seat for himself, and famously requested a martini, declaring his intent to meet his fate like a gentleman.

Mark B. Barron with a piece from his new luxury train case collection

Barron’s new collection channels this timeless spirit of opulence. Each train case, valued between $6,000 and $11,000, is produced in extremely limited numbers. Select recipients, whom Barron refers to as “iconic givers,” will receive heirloom pieces engraved with their family name in sterling silver, symbolizing legacy and distinction.

In a business world he views as divided between takers and givers, Barron has chosen to honor the latter. One third of the proceeds from every case sold will be directed to select charitable organizations. A physical donation check is placed inside each case to create a tangible act of giving.

“True luxury isn’t just about what you own,” Barron says. “It’s about what you give back. These cases pay tribute to history, craftsmanship, and generosity.”

A luxury train case by Mark B. Barron

Barron’s new satellite office at the historic Chateau Colline on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, California, will serve as the creative hub for the project. His inspiration for this endeavor was sparked after seeing Louis Vuitton wrap its New York and Paris building exteriors to resemble grand train cases, a striking reminder that the elegance of travel’s golden age still resonates today.

Through this rare fusion of artistry, heritage, and philanthropy, Barron aims to ensure his luxury train cases do more than capture attention. They will provide meaningful support to charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society and Stand Up To Cancer, while celebrating a storied era of style and generosity.

Each honoree, along with host Sandra Bookman, received original artwork created by an ArtsConnection student, highlighting the event’s celebration of creativity and education.

For 45 years, ArtsConnection has been a pivotal force in arts education within New York City public schools. Rachel Watts, Executive Director of ArtsConnection, shared how the organization has evolved from merely bringing artists into schools for performances and workshops to establishing long-term, integrated arts curricula tailored to individual schools. This evolution has seen the expansion of programs to include career exploration opportunities in the creative industries for teens, as well as professional development workshops for educators.

Fundraising Success, ArtsConnection

This year’s fundraising event was a resounding success, raising nearly $1 million. Watts attributed this achievement to the dedication and involvement of board members. From event planning by board member David Monn to securing auction items and liquor donations, the collective efforts of the board were instrumental in reaching this milestone.

Arts in Education, ArtsConnection

The impact of ArtsConnection’s programs on students is profound. According to Watts, participating students demonstrate critical thinking, independence, creativity, and perseverance. They also develop valuable teamwork skills through ensemble experiences in dance, theater, and music. These skills are not only beneficial for their education but also essential for their growth into adulthood.

Community Collaboration

ArtsConnection collaborates with cultural institutions and community venues across the five boroughs to support their programs. In particular, their teen programs introduce high school students to cultural institutions, exposing them to various career opportunities within the creative industries. This exposure helps students envision and build pathways to these careers, underscoring the importance of NYC’s rich cultural landscape.

Future Goals for ArtsConnection

With the success of the recent benefit, ArtsConnection aims to expand its ArtsConnection@Work program. This initiative brings artists to workplaces for team-building activities, providing more work opportunities for artists and generating revenue to support programs for young people. Watts encourages interested parties to reach out and participate in this program.

Host Experience

The event’s reach and impact were significantly amplified by having Sandra Bookman as the host. Her involvement, both during the event and through her show “Here and Now,” increased the visibility of ArtsConnection’s mission and efforts.

Cultural Impact

ArtsConnection has reached 3 million students, and Watts highlighted the long-term impact observed in program participants. The organization continually sees young people benefiting from the arts, which helps shape their future aspirations and personal growth.

Challenges

One of the major challenges ArtsConnection faces today is financial, due to cuts in public funding. To address this, the organization is exploring ways to reduce reliance on public funds, including the expansion of the ArtsConnection@Work program.

Personal Stories

Watts shared that the impact of ArtsConnection’s work is often seen in how teachers’ perspectives on their students change. By participating in arts workshops, students can showcase skills that might not be apparent in traditional academic settings, thereby increasing their chances of success in school.

Looking Ahead for ArtsConnection

Watts envisions a future where arts are integral to every child’s education in public schools. Despite the challenge of inadequate funding and the lack of arts teachers in many schools, she emphasizes the essential role of organizations like ArtsConnection. Watts believes that every child, regardless of the type of school they attend, deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of arts education.

ArtsConnection continues to be a beacon of hope and opportunity for NYC students, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a passion for the arts that will benefit them throughout their lives.

On May 25, 2024, the resonant tones of jazz music filled the Salvation Army Red Shield Theatre in Long Beach, California, for a special performance titled “One Night Only” by Antonia Bennett. This unique event, orchestrated by Jazz Angels, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering young musicians, brought together enthusiasts of the genre for a celebration of music and philanthropy.

Antonia Bennett, a seasoned jazz vocalist and the daughter of the iconic Tony Bennett, headlined the event, marking a significant moment in her career and for Jazz Angels. Her performance included timeless pieces from the Great American Songbook, such as “Old Devil Moon,” “Night and Day,” and “Every Time We Say Goodbye.” Known for her rich musical heritage and having grown up around legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, Bennett’s artistry has a profound connection to jazz history. This lineage has seen her perform in prestigious venues around the world, including Radio City Music Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Newport Jazz Festival, and Royal Albert Hall in London.

The concert not only showcased Bennett’s vocal prowess but also supported Jazz Angels’ mission of providing musical education and mentorship to youth across Los Angeles County. The funds raised during the event were earmarked to expand the organization’s programming into underserved communities, thereby empowering more young talents to explore and nurture their passion for jazz music. This cause is close to Bennett’s heart, as reflected in her enthusiastic participation and her aim to use her platform to make a significant impact on the lives of aspiring musicians.

Barry Cogert, the managing director of Jazz Angels, expressed immense gratitude for Bennett’s collaboration, noting that this concert was hopefully the first of many such events. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to not only preserving jazz but also using it as a conduit for empowerment, community building, and social change.

The event was set against the backdrop of the newly renovated Salvation Army Red Shield Theatre, which provided a fitting ambiance for an evening dedicated to classic and contemporary jazz renditions. Attendees not only enjoyed the musical offerings but were also able to participate in a broader conversation about the importance of arts education in fostering well-rounded, confident individuals.

Tickets for the concert were strategically priced to encourage broad participation, with special rates for youth and various VIP options, including a unique opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Bennett. This tiered pricing structure underscored Jazz Angels’ inclusive approach, aiming to make cultural events accessible to a diverse audience.

Beyond the immediate excitement of the evening, the concert served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of music education. Jazz Angels continues to reach over 350 children weekly through its in-school and after-school programming, which not only teaches music but also instills confidence, creativity, and leadership skills in its participants.

The event also highlighted the organization’s forward-looking initiatives and ongoing community engagement strategies. Jazz Angels is actively working to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that the legacy of jazz continues to inspire and shape the futures of young musicians in Los Angeles and beyond.

As the echoes of the night’s performances lingered, both Bennett and the Jazz Angels team looked forward to the future, hopeful about the continued growth of their collaborative efforts to support and celebrate jazz music. With continued support from the community and dedicated artists like Antonia Bennett, Jazz Angels’ vision of empowering young musicians and preserving the rich heritage of jazz is set to soar to new heights.

Empowering Young Musicians Through Jazz

Jazz Angels is a vibrant non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of young musicians in Los Angeles County through the vibrant rhythms and expressive soul of jazz music. Founded in 2007 by a trio of professional musicians and educators, Jazz Angels has evolved from a simple music program into a comprehensive educational initiative that impacts over 350 students weekly.

Educational Programs and Impact

At the core of Jazz Angels is its innovative educational approach, which integrates traditional jazz education with modern music trends to cater to the diverse interests of young musicians. The organization provides a dynamic learning environment where students engage in both performance and improvisation, helping to boost their musical skills and personal confidence. Through regular performances, students experience the thrill of live music in real-world settings, enhancing their practical skills and exposure to the jazz community.

Community Engagement and Expansion

Jazz Angels isn’t just about teaching music; it’s about building community and expanding access to arts education. The organization collaborates with schools and community centers to bring jazz to a wider audience, particularly focusing on underserved areas. These partnerships have been crucial in broadening the reach of their programs, ensuring that more children have the opportunity to learn and grow through music.

The Future of Jazz Angels

Looking forward, Jazz Angels is poised for significant growth. With plans to expand their programming to include a thousand students weekly, the organization aims to foster an even greater sense of community and collaboration among young musicians. This expansion will likely include more performance opportunities and perhaps even a nationwide jazz festival, further solidifying the role of Jazz Angels in promoting and preserving the rich heritage of jazz music.

For those interested in supporting or participating in Jazz Angels’ programs, opportunities abound for volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about their impactful work. Each contribution helps ensure that jazz, an essential part of America’s cultural heritage, continues to inspire and empower the next generation of musicians.

A Night of Recognition and Impact

The gala served as a platform to celebrate Thirst Project’s achievements and recognize the individuals who have made significant contributions to the organization’s mission. Following the tradition of previous years, hosted by stars like Jennifer Garner and Pauley Perrette, the event featured presentations from renowned figures. This year’s attendees might have even spotted celebrities like Adam Sandler, Kristen Stewart, or Bryce Dallas Howard. The evening was further enlivened by musical performances from popular artists like Gavin DeGraw, OKGO, and Andy Grammer.

Honoring a Champion: Ted Gibson Wins Prestigious Award

One of the most heartwarming moments of the night was the presentation of the Cameron Boyce Pioneering Spirit Award. This year’s recipient was Ted Gibson, a hairstylist who has become a force for good in the fight for clean water. Since his first encounter with Thirst Project at the North American Hairstylist Awards in 2015, Gibson’s dedication has been unwavering. Notably, he raised a staggering amount – a thousand dollars in under a minute – showcasing his unwavering commitment to the cause.

Lance Bass & Michael Turchin

Gibson’s journey with Thirst Project continued when he funded a clean water project at the 2018 Thirst Gala, inspired by the previous year’s Pioneering Spirit Award recipient, Cameron Boyce. His influence extended beyond personal contributions. In 2019, he played a pivotal role in bringing Thirst Project to the opening of his Starring Smart Salon. Furthermore, his connections within the industry have resulted in partnerships between Thirst Project and other colleagues and brands.

Ted Gibson’s unwavering support has demonstrably improved the lives of countless individuals. To date, his efforts have provided access to safe, clean water for over 1,000 people. Even more significantly, he has significantly increased public awareness of Thirst Project’s efforts to end the global water crisis.

Funding the Future: Clean Water for All

The 15th Annual Thirst Gala was a resounding success, raising over $220,000. These funds will be used to build at least 18 new clean water wells across Kenya, Eswatini, and El Salvador. These projects will have a life-changing impact, providing access to clean water for thousands of people, empowering communities, and promoting better health outcomes.

A Celebration of Progress, A Call to Action

The Thirst Project’s 15th Annual Gala was a night of celebration, but it also served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing water crisis. Over 785 million people globally lack access to clean water, a basic human right. The Thirst Project remains dedicated to solving this issue, and the success of the Gala signifies the collective power of dedicated individuals like Ted Gibson and all the event’s attendees. The fight for clean water is far from over, but with continued support and fundraising efforts like the Thirst Gala, a world where everyone has access to this essential resource is within reach.

In the bustling city of Los Angeles, amidst the kaleidoscope of cultures and languages, Bonnie Yi Hyde’s journey stands as a testament to the power of determination and compassion. From her roots in mainland China to her role as the founder of the American Born Chinese Foundation, Bonnie’s path has been marked by resilience, empathy, and a relentless commitment to philanthropy.

A Childhood Shaped by Compassion

Born and raised in mainland China, Bonnie’s early years were shaped by a deep sense of empathy and compassion. Growing up in a country where economic disparities were stark, she witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by underprivileged children. It was during one fateful visit to an orphaned girl living in poverty that Bonnie’s passion for philanthropy was ignited. The sight of the young girl, barefoot and playing in the mud, left an indelible mark on Bonnie’s heart and sparked a lifelong desire to make a difference in the lives of children like her.

A Dream of Philanthropy

From a young age, Bonnie harbored a dream of becoming a philanthropist. Inspired by her mother’s acts of kindness and generosity, she envisioned a future where she could empower underprivileged children through education and opportunity.

However, Bonnie believed that philanthropy was something reserved for the wealthy and influential. It wasn’t until later in life, guided by the wisdom of her mentor, Lisa Greer, that Bonnie realized the power of taking action in any capacity, regardless of financial status.

Thus, the seed for the American Born Chinese Foundation was planted—a nonprofit dedicated to promoting bilingual education and cultural inclusion among Chinese-American children.

Filling a Void in Bilingual Literature

Central to the mission of the American Born Chinese Foundation is the promotion of bilingual literature that reflects the experiences of multicultural children. Recognizing a lack of resources in this space, Bonnie took matters into her own hands and authored “I Love Speaking Chinese,” a book designed to teach Chinese language skills to children in an engaging and accessible way.

Through initiatives like the GiftFreeChineseBooks program, the foundation aims to provide free copies of bilingual books to families in need, empowering children to embrace their cultural heritage and language skills.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

The journey of building the American Born Chinese Foundation has been fraught with challenges. From navigating bureaucratic hurdles to securing funding for programs, Bonnie has faced numerous obstacles along the way.

Yet, her unwavering determination and commitment to her cause have propelled her forward, inspiring others to join her in creating positive change. Despite the setbacks, Bonnie remains steadfast in her belief that every child deserves access to quality education and resources, regardless of their background or circumstances.

A Community of Empowerment

Beyond the pages of a book, the American Born Chinese Foundation is fostering a vibrant community where multicultural children can thrive and celebrate their unique identities. Through events like the Los Angeles Kids Book Festival, Bonnie aims to create spaces where children can discover the joy of reading while embracing their cultural diversity. By bringing families together and providing access to resources, the foundation is empowering children to embrace their cultural heritage and language skills with pride.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Reflecting on her journey, Bonnie extends a heartfelt tribute to her mother, whose unwavering compassion and resilience have been a guiding light throughout her life. From instilling the values of philanthropy to leading by example, Bonnie’s mother has been a source of inspiration and strength, shaping Bonnie into the compassionate advocate she is today.

A Vision for the Future

As Bonnie looks to the future, her vision is clear: to continue expanding the reach and impact of the American Born Chinese Foundation, touching the lives of even more children and families in need. With her passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to cultural inclusion, Bonnie Yi Hyde is making a profound difference in the lives of American Born Chinese children and leaving a legacy of compassion and empowerment for generations to come.

Professional Background

Bonnie Hyde’s professional journey reflects a remarkable evolution driven by a desire for personal fulfillment and social impact. Initially following a conventional path, Bonnie pursued a degree in accounting, a choice often typical for many Asian students. She navigated the corporate world, working for traditional accounting firms alongside seasoned professionals.

However, after owning a taxation business and experiencing a midlife crisis, Bonnie embarked on a transformative path. Driven by a passion for education and psychology, she pursued a master’s degree in educational psychology and transitioned into the role of a preschool teacher. This career shift allowed Bonnie to channel her expertise into nurturing young minds, fostering a love for learning, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children—a testament to her resilience, adaptability, and commitment to personal growth.

Let me share some of the standout moments so you can relive the magic. Our evening began with Roger Lundblade, our charismatic announcer and auctioneer, setting the stage for our esteemed host, LeVar Burton.

Innocent Lives Foundation Gala

Spotlight on Our Stars:

Roger Lundblade: The ultimate auctioneer and voice of the night.

LeVar Burton: A true legend, whose generosity knows no bounds. Spending time with him was a dream come true.

The ambiance was set by the melodious Tara Parham, whose angelic voice uplifted everyone present.

Honoring the Champions:

Lisa Guerrero: Recognized with the ILF Light of Hope Award for her groundbreaking work with Inside Edition, shedding light on child trafficking during major sporting events.

Randy Burton, J.D., Hon. Litt.D.: A child advocate since the 1980s, he was humorously teased as LeVar’s cousin. He too was honored with the Light of Hope Award.

Chief Criminal Investigator Kevin Atkins: A real-life hero from South Carolina, arresting predators and rescuing children. He received our final Light of Hope Award.

The awards segued into a thrilling live auction. Memorable moments included LeVar offering a lunch date, Greg Grunberg from The Action Figures auctioning studio time, and the heartfelt contribution of a painting by Rosey D’Angelo, who shared the deep meaning behind her artwork.

Our “Fund a Case” segment was deeply moving. LeVar Burton and Lisa Guerrero each generously funded FIVE CASES, contributing $25,000 each. The room was filled with overwhelming generosity, raising a total of $124,848.50 to combat child exploitation.

The night was further electrified by The Action Figures, who delivered a stellar performance. Kudos to Jack Coleman, Brad Savage, Scott Grimes, Adrian Pasdar, Nick Marzock, Drew Powell, and Greg Grunberg for their outstanding show.

A week has passed, and the emotions from that night remain fresh. The love, energy, and commitment in the room were palpable.

On behalf of The Innocent Lives Foundation board (Douglas Ash, Erin Gray, Stephanie Paul, Dr. Kathie Mathis, Tim Maloney, and myself) and our dedicated team (Shane McCombs, John McCombs, Erin Maloney, LCSW, Ernesto Maldonado, and Cardell Oliver) – a heartfelt THANK YOU. Your support in our mission to end child exploitation is invaluable.

As we reflect on the success of this year’s gala, we are filled with gratitude and hope. The collective efforts of everyone involved have not only raised significant funds but also heightened awareness about child exploitation. The stories shared, the awards given, and the funds raised are all testaments to the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together for a cause.
