As the world prepares for another FIFA World Cup, conversations about elite athletes typically focus on physical conditioning, tactics, and statistics. We analyze speed, strength, goals scored, passing accuracy, and countless other measurable metrics that define modern sport.

Yet beneath every championship performance lies something much harder to quantify.

Why do certain athletes thrive under pressure while others struggle? What separates talented competitors from consistent winners? How can coaches identify future stars before traditional scouting methods recognize their potential?

These questions are increasingly shaping the future of sports, and they are at the center of a growing movement that blends psychology, technology, leadership, and mentorship.

That conversation will take center stage in West Hollywood as athletes, founders, investors, civic leaders, and sports innovators gather for “Role Models in Sports,” an event designed to explore the evolving science behind elite performance just days before the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins in North America.

But the significance of the gathering extends far beyond soccer.

It reflects a fundamental shift in how the sports world is thinking about human potential.

Lisa Tengbom

The Athlete of the Future

For decades, sports organizations have relied heavily on observable physical attributes when evaluating talent.

Speed could be timed.

Strength could be measured.

Performance statistics could be tracked.

Those tools remain essential, but increasingly they are only part of the equation.

Today’s sports leaders are becoming more interested in traits that are harder to see but often determine long-term success. Resilience. Emotional control. Coachability. Adaptability. Leadership. Decision-making under pressure.

These characteristics frequently separate good athletes from exceptional ones.

What stood out to me is how rapidly this conversation has moved from the margins into the mainstream. Professional teams, collegiate programs, and youth development organizations are investing significant resources into understanding the psychological dimensions of performance.

In many ways, sports are beginning to adopt a more holistic understanding of talent.

The question is no longer simply “How fast can an athlete run?”

It is increasingly “How effectively can they respond when everything goes wrong?”

Katriina Lillelund

The Growing Influence of AI in Sports

Artificial intelligence has become one of the most discussed technologies in nearly every industry, and sports are no exception.

While fans often associate sports analytics with performance statistics and predictive models, AI is beginning to influence much deeper aspects of athlete evaluation.

New technologies are helping organizations analyze behavioral patterns, decision-making tendencies, emotional responses, and leadership characteristics at a scale that was previously impossible.

The goal is not to replace coaches or scouts. Rather, it is to provide additional insights that can help organizations make more informed decisions.

Supporters believe these tools can reveal qualities that traditional scouting may overlook. Critics caution that human judgment must remain central to athlete development.

The reality likely lies somewhere between those positions.

Technology may be able to identify patterns, but understanding human potential remains a profoundly human challenge.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded within sports organizations, finding the right balance between data and intuition will become one of the industry’s most important challenges.

Andrew Beinbrink

Why Mentorship Still Matters

For all the attention being paid to technology, one of the event’s most important themes is also one of the oldest.

Mentorship.

Every generation of athletes can point to coaches, teachers, parents, teammates, and role models who helped shape their journey.

While technology can provide information, mentors provide wisdom.

They help athletes navigate failure, pressure, self-doubt, setbacks, and personal growth. They offer perspective that no algorithm can fully replicate.

This focus on mentorship feels particularly relevant today.

Young athletes are growing up in an environment unlike any previous generation. Social media scrutiny begins earlier. Recruiting pressures arrive younger. Expectations can become overwhelming before athletes even reach adulthood.

Strong mentors help create the emotional foundation necessary for sustainable success.

That is why leadership and positive influence remain central themes within modern athlete development programs.

The best sports cultures are rarely built solely through talent. They are built through relationships.

Dolph Lundgren

From Karate Champion to Hollywood Star

One of the evening’s most fascinating participants is actor, filmmaker, engineer, and martial artist Dolph Lundgren.

Many people know Lundgren primarily through his film career, but his background in elite athletics is equally remarkable. His achievements in competitive karate and leadership roles within sports organizations offer a unique perspective on performance, discipline, and personal development.

His presence highlights an often-overlooked truth about elite performers.

Whether in sports, business, entertainment, or entrepreneurship, many of the underlying psychological traits remain surprisingly similar.

Discipline.

Resilience.

Adaptability.

The ability to learn from failure.

Confidence without complacency.

These characteristics frequently appear across disciplines.

The world’s highest achievers often share more similarities than differences.

A World Cup Moment for North America

The timing of this discussion is particularly noteworthy.

The FIFA World Cup’s arrival in North America represents one of the most significant sporting moments in the region’s history. Millions of fans will focus on the world’s best players competing on the biggest stage.

Yet major sporting events often influence much more than competition.

They create opportunities to examine how athletes are developed, supported, and prepared for success.

As Los Angeles prepares to welcome global audiences, conversations about performance psychology, athlete intelligence, leadership development, and mentorship feel especially relevant.

The future stars inspired by this World Cup are likely watching today.

The systems we build now will shape how they develop tomorrow.

The Business of Human Potential

Another interesting aspect of the event is its intersection between sports, technology, entrepreneurship, and investment.

Sports technology has become one of the fastest-growing sectors within the broader innovation economy. Investors increasingly view athlete development, performance optimization, wellness, and sports intelligence as major growth opportunities.

What I find particularly interesting is how these industries are beginning to converge.

Sports organizations are becoming more data-driven.

Technology companies are becoming more focused on human performance.

Investors are looking for solutions that improve outcomes while preserving the human elements that make sports meaningful.

The result is a rapidly evolving ecosystem where psychology, technology, and leadership are no longer separate conversations.

They are becoming part of the same discussion.

Winning Beyond the Scoreboard

The most successful athletes in the world are rarely defined solely by physical ability.

Their achievements often stem from qualities that are harder to measure but impossible to ignore: perseverance, emotional intelligence, adaptability, leadership, and the ability to continue growing under pressure.

As the sports world enters an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, those human characteristics may become even more valuable.

Events like “Role Models in Sports” reflect a growing recognition that elite performance is about more than talent.

It is about understanding the complete athlete.

And perhaps the most important lesson is this: while technology can help identify potential, mentors, coaches, and communities still play the most important role in helping that potential become reality.

As the World Cup captures global attention, that message may be more relevant than ever.

A century after her birth, Marilyn Monroe remains one of the most recognizable figures in modern culture.

Few stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age continue to command the kind of global attention that Monroe does. Her image appears on museum walls, fashion runways, magazine covers, and social media feeds. Her life continues to inspire books, documentaries, films, academic discussions, and artistic reinterpretations. Yet perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Marilyn Monroe’s legacy is not simply that she is remembered, but that she continues to be rediscovered by each new generation.

That enduring fascination was on full display in recent weeks as a series of high-profile events celebrated what has become known as the Marilyn Monroe Century, a global commemoration marking 100 years since the birth of the woman born Norma Jeane Mortenson and transformed into one of the most influential cultural icons of the twentieth century.

From Hollywood gatherings and museum discussions to a charitable auction in Cannes, the centennial celebrations revealed something deeper than nostalgia. They demonstrated how Monroe’s story continues to evolve long after her lifetime.

More Than a Movie Star

For decades, discussions about Marilyn Monroe have often focused on familiar images: the white dress billowing above a subway grate, the platinum blonde hair, the dazzling smile, and the glamorous Hollywood persona.

But contemporary conversations are increasingly shifting beyond those iconic photographs.

Today’s audiences are often more interested in understanding the woman behind the image. They want to know about Norma Jeane, the ambitious young woman who navigated an often unforgiving entertainment industry, studied acting seriously, challenged studio expectations, and sought creative control at a time when few actresses were granted such opportunities.

What stood out to me about the centennial celebrations is how many of them focused not simply on Monroe as a celebrity, but on Monroe as a complex human being whose story remains surprisingly relevant.

Questions surrounding fame, identity, media scrutiny, public image, and personal reinvention resonate just as strongly today as they did during her lifetime.

Bringing Marilyn Back to Life at Chateau Marmont

One of the most intriguing events of the centennial took place at the legendary Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, a location deeply intertwined with Hollywood mythology.

There, actress Barbie Ferreira participated in a dramatic reading connected to The Marilyn Monroe Century, a new book chronicling Monroe’s life through photographs and storytelling.

The setting itself carried symbolic weight. Few locations represent Hollywood’s glamorous and mysterious history quite like Chateau Marmont. Hosting a literary and theatrical tribute there felt less like a promotional event and more like a conversation between past and present.

What makes these modern interpretations fascinating is that they allow younger generations to engage with Monroe’s story through contemporary voices. Rather than preserving her legacy behind glass, they keep it alive through performance, discussion, and reinterpretation.

That process is essential for any cultural icon hoping to remain relevant across generations.

The Power of Photography in Preserving a Legend

Much of the centennial celebration revolves around The Marilyn Monroe Century: From Norma Jeane to Icon, A Story in Photographs, a volume built around the remarkable archive of legendary photographer Dr. Bruno Bernard.

Photography played a unique role in Marilyn Monroe’s rise to global fame.

Long before social media transformed celebrities into constant visual presences, photographers helped shape public perception of movie stars. Images became narratives. A single photograph could define an era, a personality, or an entire career.

Bruno Bernard was among the most influential photographers of Hollywood’s Golden Age. His images captured not only Monroe’s beauty but also moments of spontaneity, vulnerability, and charisma that helped define her public identity.

Looking at these photographs today offers more than historical documentation. They provide insight into how celebrity itself was constructed during the twentieth century.

In many ways, Monroe became one of the earliest examples of a truly modern media phenomenon.

Cannes, Charity, and Cultural Legacy

The centennial celebrations extended beyond Hollywood to the French Riviera, where photographs from the Bruno Bernard archives became a centerpiece of the prestigious amfAR Cannes Gala.

The auction raised €75,000 in support of efforts to combat AIDS, transforming Monroe’s legacy into a vehicle for philanthropy and social impact.

I find this particularly meaningful because it demonstrates how cultural icons can continue contributing to important causes long after their lifetimes.

Rather than functioning merely as collectibles, the photographs became catalysts for charitable giving. Their value was measured not only in artistic significance but also in their ability to generate support for a global health mission.

It is a reminder that legacy is not simply about remembrance. It is about continued relevance.

Revisiting Marilyn Through Cinema

The Academy Museum’s centennial programming added another dimension to the celebration through a panel discussion and a special screening of The Asphalt Jungle, one of the films that helped establish Monroe’s early screen presence.

Film screenings often reveal how cultural perspectives evolve over time.

Audiences watching Monroe today are not seeing the same figure viewers encountered in the 1950s. They bring different social values, different understandings of celebrity, and different questions about gender, power, and fame.

As a result, Monroe’s performances continue to generate new interpretations.

The Academy Museum event highlighted how film history remains a living conversation rather than a static archive. Each generation returns to classic works and discovers something different within them.

For Monroe, that ongoing reinterpretation has become one of the defining characteristics of her legacy.

Why Marilyn Still Matters

One hundred years after her birth, Marilyn Monroe occupies a rare place in popular culture.

Many stars are remembered for their achievements. Some are remembered for their influence. Very few become symbols that transcend their original era.

Monroe belongs to that category.

She represents Hollywood glamour, certainly. But she also symbolizes ambition, reinvention, vulnerability, resilience, and the complicated relationship between public image and private reality.

That complexity is why books continue to be written about her. It is why museums continue to host discussions. It is why filmmakers, artists, photographers, and writers continue returning to her story.

A Century Later, the Conversation Continues

The Marilyn Monroe Century celebrations are not simply commemorating a birthday. They are acknowledging the extraordinary staying power of a cultural figure whose influence stretches across film, fashion, photography, literature, and popular culture.

From a literary gathering at Chateau Marmont to a museum panel in Los Angeles and a charitable auction in Cannes, the events demonstrate that Monroe’s story remains very much alive.

What began as the life of a young woman named Norma Jeane evolved into one of the most recognizable legends in modern history.

A hundred years later, the fascination endures, not because Marilyn Monroe belongs to the past, but because every generation continues to find something of itself reflected in her story.

There is a specific kind of electricity you feel walking into the Aratani Theatre on a Sunday night when the house is full. Little Tokyo is buzzing outside, the lobby is filled with people dressed beautifully, all ages, all backgrounds, a genuine cross-section of Los Angeles — and somewhere inside, a band is warming up for a Rodgers and Hammerstein score that has been both beloved and contested for nearly 70 years. Before the lights even dim, you know you are somewhere that matters.

East West Players’ co-production with the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center of Flower Drum Song — featuring a newly revised 2026 book by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang — is the most ambitious production in the company’s 60-year history. It is also, without question, the most talked-about stage event in Los Angeles this spring. The buzz is earned.

East West Players delivers a landmark revival that celebrates Asian-American excellence, even when the material tests its own good faith.

The Story, For Those Who Need It

Set in San Francisco’s Chinatown around 1960, Flower Drum Song follows Mei-Li, a young Chinese opera artist who escapes communist China by barge and lands in America searching for a family friend. What she finds instead is the glittering, loud, and complicated world of Grant Avenue nightclubs — a Chinatown split between elders clinging to tradition and a younger generation rewriting the rules of what it means to be Chinese in America. At the center of it all is a love triangle between Mei-Li, the dashing Ta, and the irresistible club star Linda Low — and the larger question the show has always been quietly asking: who gets to define the Asian-American story, and on whose terms?

Hwang, who first revised the Rodgers and Hammerstein original in 2001, has taken another pass at the book specifically for this production. The result pushes harder into questions of identity, assimilation, and cultural ownership — themes that felt relevant a quarter century ago and feel even more urgent today.

A Cast That Makes You Forget Time

Here is where we set aside any academic debate and simply celebrate: this cast is extraordinary.

Scott Keiji Takeda as Ta and Grace Yoo as Mei-Li anchor the production with warmth and genuine vocal command. These two can break into Peking Opera choreography mid-scene and make it feel completely natural — because in their hands it is. Their voices are clean, their diction crystalline, and you believe every moment of the slow, inevitable pull between them.

But the evening belongs to Krista Marie Yu. Her Linda Low is a force of nature — magnetic, funny, and fully self-possessed. She sells the fantasy of her character completely while never losing the human being underneath. Her “Grant Avenue” number is the kind of showstopper that makes you want to stand up and clap before it’s finished.

Emily Kuroda — Mrs. Kim from Gilmore Girls to a generation of fans — is a revelation on this stage. Her comic timing is a masterclass, her voice fuller and more commanding than you might expect, and her chemistry with Marc Oka is so warm and genuinely funny that their scenes together become the emotional heartbeat of the evening. Their delivery of “Don’t Marry Me” left the audience in delighted stitches.

And then there is Gedde Watanabe, who has been quietly doing some of the most beautiful musical theatre work in Los Angeles across multiple East West productions. His solo in the second act is devastating in the best possible way — that rare combination of absurdist humor, aching sincerity, and total technical control that only comes from decades of craft. Kenton Chen as Harvard brings a sharp wit and committed specificity to a character that has been reimagined for the 2026 moment with welcome boldness.

The Glamour and the Gaps

Artistic Director Lily Tung Crystal has brought something genuinely new to East West Players: unapologetic spectacle. She understands that representation at this scale requires not just casting Asian-American talent but framing it with the full resources of a major production. The marketing, the scale of the production design, the presence of the show throughout Little Tokyo — it all signals ambition, and it is exciting to witness.

The standout of the design team is Ruoxuan Li, whose costume work is jaw-dropping from the first moment. The Peking Opera-inspired headdresses on Linda Low, the showgirl sequins of Chop Suey, the layered silks on Madam Liang — every choice communicates character and period while radiating pure visual joy. This is costume design operating at another level.

Chen-Wei Liao’s scenic work brings rich color to the Aratani’s intimate stage, with the on-stage band reveal a genuinely theatrical moment. Some execution details — particularly in the Chinese-language elements of the design — could stand to be sharpened before the run ends.

The orchestra is where the production shows its budget constraints most clearly. The score needs more strings to breathe the way Hammerstein intended, and a couple of instrumental substitutions don’t quite land. Music director Marc Macalintal is clearly working with limited resources and doing admirable work, but you can hear where the production needs more investment to fully deliver the score’s grandeur.

What It All Adds Up To

There will always be a conversation to be had about Flower Drum Song itself — a musical written by two white men in 1958 about a community they observed from the outside, revised twice now by a playwright whose lifetime of work has been dedicated to complicating exactly that dynamic. Hwang has spoken candidly about how the show was, in his childhood, the rare exception: Asian faces in a genuine love story, presented as Americans like everyone else. That was radical then. The question of whether revision is enough to reconcile the show’s origins with its ambitions is one audiences and critics will debate.

What is not debatable is that on the stage of the Aratani Theatre, surrounded by one of the most talented casts assembled in Los Angeles in years, those questions feel alive rather than settled — which is precisely where great theatre lives.

East West Players has always been about making space where Asian-American artists can be the full, complex, luminous story rather than a footnote to someone else’s. This production, in all its ambition and imperfection, is exactly that.

Don’t miss it. Click here for tickets.

Flower Drum Song runs through May 31, 2026, at the Aratani Theatre, 244 S.

There’s no shortage of influencer events in Los Angeles, but every so often, one manages to feel a little more curated and intentional than the usual crowded brand gathering. That was very much the atmosphere surrounding the recent Mashup LA, which took over a private estate in Beverly Hills on Thursday, May 14 for an evening centered around content creation, networking, and immersive brand experiences.

From the moment guests arrived, the event carried the kind of relaxed but elevated energy that Los Angeles does particularly well. Set against the backdrop of a luxurious Beverly Hills property, the evening brought together a mix of entertainment personalities, digital creators, reality television talent, and lifestyle brands, creating a social environment that felt both polished and genuinely interactive.

Love on The Spectrum’s Dani Bowmen attends Mashup LA Event on Thursday, May 14 in Beverly Hills

A Mix of Reality Talent and Digital Creators

One thing that stood out about Mashup LA was the diversity of the guest list. Rather than focusing solely on celebrity appearances or influencer culture, the event blended both worlds naturally.

Among those attending were personalities connected to several well-known reality series, including cast members from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Love on the Spectrum, and The Golden Bachelor.

Jennifer Affleck was photographed attending the event, while Dani Bowman also made an appearance during the evening’s festivities.

The crowd itself reflected the current creator landscape quite well. There were established personalities with millions of followers alongside smaller creators and emerging digital talent, all sharing the same space in a way that felt collaborative rather than overly exclusive.

That balance gave the event a more modern feel, especially in a media environment where influence increasingly comes from a variety of platforms and audiences.

Jennifer Affleck attends Mashup LA event on Thursday, May 14 in Beverly Hills

Brand Experiences Designed for Content and Connection

Mashup LA also leaned heavily into experiential branding, something that continues to shape how lifestyle and entertainment events are being designed in Los Angeles.

One of the most talked-about spaces of the evening was the Minky Couture lounge, which created a comfortable and visually styled environment where guests could relax, connect, and create content throughout the night.

Known for its ultra-soft luxury blankets, Minky Couture brought a cozy but elevated atmosphere to the estate, adding a more intimate element to an otherwise high-energy event.

Also featured was iPolish Digital Press-On Acrylics, which added a beauty-focused activation to the experience and gave guests an opportunity to engage with products directly during the event.

What I appreciated most is that the activations didn’t feel overly forced or commercial. They were integrated naturally into the flow of the evening, allowing creators and guests to interact with the brands in a way that felt organic and visually engaging.

A Growing Shift in Los Angeles Event Culture

Events like Mashup LA highlight how entertainment networking in Los Angeles continues to evolve.

A few years ago, many industry gatherings were structured more rigidly around celebrity appearances or traditional media coverage. Now, the focus is increasingly on creating environments where creators, personalities, and brands can interact more fluidly while generating authentic social content in real time.

That shift was visible throughout the night. Conversations felt relaxed, content creation happened naturally, and the event seemed designed as much for relationship-building as for visibility.

In many ways, that reflects where the entertainment and digital industries are heading overall. Influence is no longer concentrated in just one category of celebrity or media personality. It now exists across multiple platforms and communities, and events like Mashup LA seem to understand that dynamic very well.

Beverly Hills as the Perfect Backdrop

Hosting the event at a private Beverly Hills estate added another layer to the experience.

Los Angeles has always excelled at blending luxury with casual social culture, and Beverly Hills remains one of the few places where those two worlds merge effortlessly. The setting created an environment that felt exclusive without becoming overly formal, which fit the tone of the evening perfectly.

From networking moments to photo opportunities, the estate itself became part of the experience, offering creators and attendees a visually polished setting that complemented the lifestyle-driven nature of the event.

The Power of Community-Driven Events

What makes gatherings like Mashup LA increasingly relevant is that they are no longer just parties or promotional events. They are becoming community spaces for creators, brands, and entertainment personalities navigating a rapidly changing media landscape.

For emerging creators, events like this provide direct access to relationships and visibility that might otherwise take years to build. For brands, they offer a more personal and immersive way to connect with audiences through trusted personalities rather than traditional advertising.

And for attendees overall, the experience becomes less about simply being seen and more about participating in a creative ecosystem that continues to expand.

Final Thoughts

The recent Mashup LA in Beverly Hills captured something that feels increasingly important in today’s entertainment landscape: connection.

Rather than relying solely on celebrity status or flashy production, the evening succeeded by creating an atmosphere where creators, talent, and brands could interact naturally while still delivering the elevated aesthetic expected from a Los Angeles lifestyle event.

With reality personalities, influencers, and immersive brand activations all sharing the same space, Mashup LA reflected the direction modern entertainment culture is moving toward, collaborative, content-driven, and built around community as much as visibility.

And judging by the energy surrounding the evening, it’s likely we’ll be seeing even more of these hybrid creator experiences throughout the year.

Some events feel timeless, not because they resist change, but because they carry their identity forward with clarity. The Viennese Opera Ball in New York has always belonged to that category. Returning for its 70th annual gala on May 8, 2026, the evening once again takes place at Cipriani 42nd Street, a setting that mirrors the grandeur and ceremony the Ball is known for.

This year’s edition carries an added sense of occasion. Alongside its milestone anniversary, the Ball also honors 270 years since the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and recognizes the 250th anniversary of the United States. Together, these elements reinforce what the evening has long represented, a cultural bridge between Austria and America, expressed through music, dance, and tradition.

A Tradition Rooted in Cultural Exchange

Since its founding in 1955, the Viennese Opera Ball has brought the elegance and ritual of Vienna’s grand ball tradition to Manhattan. Held under the auspices of the U.S. Austrian Chamber of Commerce, it has evolved into one of New York’s most enduring international cultural events.

What stood out to me is how consistent its identity has remained. The Ball has never tried to modernize for the sake of relevance. Instead, it preserves a sense of ceremony that feels increasingly rare, while still welcoming a contemporary audience of diplomats, cultural figures, philanthropists, and leaders from across industries.

It is not simply a social gathering. It is a cultural expression, one that brings together different worlds through a shared appreciation for music, tradition, and refinement.

A Theme That Sets the Tone

The 2026 theme, “A Magical Night, a Fairy Masquerade Ball,” introduces a sense of visual storytelling that complements the evening’s structure. Masks are encouraged, adding a layer of intrigue without disrupting the formality that defines the event.

What I find particularly compelling is how the theme enhances rather than replaces tradition. The white tie dress code remains unchanged, with gentlemen in tails and ladies in full-length ball gowns. The masquerade element adds texture, but the foundation stays intact.

Music, Performance, and Artistic Presence

The program reflects the Ball’s deep connection to classical performance.

Among the featured opera stars are Angel Blue, Lawrence Brownlee, Hera Hyesang Park, Adam Smith, and Golda Zahra. Their presence brings a level of artistic authenticity that anchors the evening.

The ballet component is led by Liudmila Konovalova, whose performance reflects the precision and elegance associated with Viennese tradition.

Music throughout the evening is provided by the Viennese Opera Ball Orchestra under the direction of Rainer Sulzgruber. What stood out to me here is the continuity. The music does not feel like a segment of the evening, it carries through it, shaping the atmosphere from beginning to end.

The Ceremony That Defines the Evening

One of the most anticipated moments remains the opening ceremony, featuring the formal presentation of debutantes and their escorts. Choreographed by Sandra Stockmayer of Dancing School Svabek, this procession is central to the Ball’s identity.

There is a precision to it that feels almost ceremonial. The movement, the timing, and the visual symmetry all reflect a tradition that has been preserved with care. It is not simply a performance, it is a continuation of a cultural ritual.

What stood out to me is how this moment sets the tone for everything that follows. It establishes a sense of order and elegance that carries throughout the evening.

An Evening That Unfolds in Layers

Following the opening, the evening moves through a series of experiences that feel both structured and fluid. A formal dinner gives way to dancing, while live and silent auctions introduce a philanthropic dimension.

At midnight, the traditional Quadrille invites guests to participate in a shared dance, breaking the boundary between observer and participant. It is one of those rare moments where the room shifts from formality to collective energy.

Later in the evening, the Tanzbar, featuring DJ Olivier, introduces a more contemporary note without disrupting the overall tone. What I noticed is how naturally the evening transitions between these phases. Nothing feels abrupt. It evolves gradually.

Philanthropy at the Core

While the visual and cultural elements define the experience, the Ball’s philanthropic mission remains central. Over the years, it has supported a wide range of charitable, cultural, and humanitarian initiatives, while continuing to promote Austrian heritage in the United States.

This dual purpose, celebration and contribution, is what gives the event its depth. It is not only about preserving tradition, but also about extending its impact into the present.

A Legacy That Continues to Evolve

Reaching its 70th anniversary, the Viennese Opera Ball stands as both a historical milestone and a living tradition. It has managed to maintain its identity while remaining relevant, not by adapting to trends, but by staying true to its purpose.

What stayed with me most is the sense of continuity. The Ball connects generations, cultures, and disciplines in a way that feels intentional rather than symbolic.

Where Tradition Meets the Present

In a city known for constant movement, the Viennese Opera Ball offers something different. It slows time, if only for an evening, and allows tradition to take the lead.

The combination of music, ceremony, and cultural exchange creates an experience that feels complete. It is not just about what you see, but how the evening unfolds around you.

As New York marks this 70th annual edition, the Ball reaffirms its place as more than a social event. It is a space where heritage, artistry, and human connection come together with clarity and purpose.

And in that sense, it remains as relevant now as it was when it began.

Los Angeles knows how to host a gala, but every so often, an evening stands out not just for its elegance, but for the intention behind it. The Asian Hall of Fame’s 2026 Heritage Gala was one of those moments. Held on May 1 at The Biltmore Los Angeles, the black-tie event brought together a select group of 150 patrons from across California, Washington, Hawaii, and New York for a night that felt both celebratory and purposeful.

What stood out to me from the outset was the tone. The setting, the design, and the pacing of the evening all felt considered without being overly formal. With custom designs by official partner TAO shaping the visual experience, the atmosphere leaned toward understated sophistication rather than spectacle.

A Gala with Purpose

Beyond the setting, the evening carried clear significance. The Heritage Gala marked the official opening of Asian Heritage Month and introduced the Asian Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 Inductees. At the same time, it served as a major fundraising effort supporting women and girls through the Women In Tech, Entertainment, Science & Sports (WinTESS) Scholarship program.

The scale of that impact is already notable. In the previous year alone, 120 applicants from 36 states, Puerto Rico, and two countries competed for grants ranging from $500 to $5,000. It is a reminder that the gala is not only about recognition, but also about creating opportunities that extend well beyond the event itself.

Honoring Leadership and Legacy

The most prominent recognition of the evening went to Melinda Rogers, who was named Woman of the Year. The award was presented by her brother, Sir William Rogers, adding a personal dimension to the moment.

The Rogers family legacy dates back to the early 1900s, when they established the Union Rock Company, once the largest sand, rock, and gravel enterprise in the world. Their contributions helped shape key Southern California infrastructure, including projects that became the Pasadena Freeway, The Grapevine, and The Wedge at Newport Beach.

Since stepping into her role as Chairwoman, Rogers has focused on expanding the organization’s reach through partnerships with institutions such as the San Marino Motor Classic, The California Club, The Athenaeum at Caltech, and The Lincoln Club. She also played a key role in merging the Asian Hall of Fame with the Women Investing In Nonprofits (WIN) volunteer guild, while advancing efforts toward a Honolulu expansion and a future center in the Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley.

A Diverse and Global Class of Inductees

The Class of 2026 reflected one of the most diverse groups in the organization’s history, spanning sports, entertainment, business, science, and culture.

Among those honored were baseball pioneer Hideo Nomo, NASA astronaut Dr. Kjell N. Lindgren, Emmy Award-winning anchor Frank Buckley, and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro.

The entertainment world was represented by K-pop icon Rosé, while business and philanthropy honorees included Maggie Tseng, Jerry Lee and Charlene Lee, Dave Lu, and Miky Lee.

Cultural and global contributions were recognized through figures such as Yue-Sai Kan, Dr. Charles Huang, and Kitty Lo, along with Emmy-winning producer Simran Baidwan.

The evening also honored institutions and families, including the Yang family behind Din Tai Fung and the Valbuena Family of Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation. Semiconductor leader TSMC was represented by Morris Chang and Sophie Chang.

Goodwill Ambassadors Robert Vargas and Dennis Quaid, along with Cultural Ambassador Jin Ye, were also formally appointed during the ceremony.

A Voice of Experience

One of the more reflective moments of the evening came from Loida Nicolas Lewis, an Asian Hall of Fame inductee since 2007. She shared insights from her memoir Why Should Guys Have All the Fun?, offering a perspective shaped by her leadership of TLC Beatrice International, a $2.2 billion multinational company.

Her story carries a rare distinction. She became the first Asian woman to pass the New York bar without attending law school in the United States, and later led the company following the passing of her husband, Reginald Lewis, widely recognized as America’s first Black billionaire.

What stood out here was the depth of experience she brought to the room. It added a layer of reflection to an otherwise celebratory evening.

Performance, Music, and Cultural Expression

The evening was guided by Suzie Suh, whose presence as Master of Ceremonies set a composed and welcoming tone.

Headlining the performances was Maki Mae, a Grammy Voting Member and multi-lingual vocalist who performed selections from her upcoming classical album New Moon. Her story, including being born mostly deaf and later performing on global stages such as America’s Got Talent and the Special Olympics World Games, added a powerful dimension to the evening.

Musical accompaniment by Dr. Jason Lo and Ryan Phipps provided continuity throughout the program, while the Los Angeles Taiko Collective opened the raffle segment with a performance that brought a different kind of energy into the room.

The inaugural Heritage Costumes Fashion Show introduced a visual element that felt both celebratory and cultural, featuring pageant titleholders including Nicole Ho, Michelle Ho, Tsengel Ganbat, and Alejandra Ranaudo.

A Legacy That Continues to Expand

The Asian Hall of Fame traces its origins to the Robert Chinn Foundation, with roots dating back to 1863. Since then, it has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit with a presence across multiple states.

Since 2022, the organization has delivered $3.7 million in direct impact through 216 grants, scholarships, and fellowships, supporting 1,860 jobs. These numbers reflect a scale of influence that extends far beyond the gala itself.

The 2026 season was supported by title sponsors Millennium Hotels & Resorts, Melinda Rogers, and TAO, along with partners including Microsoft, MHG Capital, and BGW. Institutional support came from organizations such as Walt Disney Studios, Boeing, and Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation.

An Evening That Balanced Celebration and Purpose

What stayed with me most about the evening was its balance. It managed to celebrate achievement, culture, and community while maintaining a clear sense of purpose.

The setting, the performances, and the recognitions all contributed to a cohesive experience, but it was the underlying mission that gave the night its weight.

The next Asian Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for November 7, 2026, again at The Biltmore Los Angeles. If this gala is any indication, it will continue to build on a legacy that is both evolving and firmly rooted in impact.

There’s something about nights like this that stay with you. Not just because of the performances or the names in the room, but because of what the event represents. This year’s Billboard Women in Music 2026, held at the Hollywood Palladium, felt less like a typical awards show and more like a collective moment of recognition for the women who are actively shaping the sound and direction of music today.

Hosted by Keke Palmer, the evening carried an energy that was both celebratory and reflective. She opened the night with a soulful performance and a message that set the tone, acknowledging just how impactful the past year has been for women across the global music scene.

KPop Demon Hunters Take Center Stage

One of the most defining moments of the night came when KPop Demon Hunters, featuring EJAE, AUDREY NUNA, and REI AMI, were honored as Women of the Year.

Watching their performance of “Golden,” which has already earned both Academy Award and Grammy recognition, it was clear why they were chosen. The room responded immediately, not just to the performance itself, but to what it represented.

What stood out even more was their acceptance speech. EJAE spoke about bringing her full identity into her music, emphasizing that music doesn’t recognize boundaries like race or gender, it simply responds to truth. REI AMI and AUDREY NUNA continued that sentiment, highlighting the strength and clarity that comes from knowing who you are and showing up fully as yourself.

It didn’t feel rehearsed or overly polished. It felt real, and that made it resonate.

Laufey performs on stage at the Billboard Women in Music 2026 held at the Hollywood Palladium on April 29, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

A Night of Performances and Recognition

The evening moved seamlessly between performances and awards, each moment highlighting a different dimension of the industry.

Ella Langley received the Powerhouse Award, presented by Lainey Wilson, following a performance that reflected her growing influence in country music.

Kehlani delivered one of the more introspective moments of the night. After performing “Folded,” she accepted the Impact Award from Ciara, speaking about how impact isn’t always about visibility or scale, but about staying grounded and human in an industry that often pushes otherwise.

That perspective felt especially relevant, and it lingered long after she left the stage.

Teyana Taylor performs onstage at the Billboard Women in Music 2026 held at the Hollywood Palladium on April 29, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

Innovation, Growth, and Artistic Identity

Laufey, who received the Innovator Award from Brandi Carlile, offered a thoughtful reflection on what innovation really means. Rather than focusing on individual achievement, she pointed to the collective effort of women in the industry, and how creating space for each other has been just as important as pushing boundaries.

Mariah the Scientist was honored as Rising Star, and her performance, alongside a surprise appearance by Kali Uchis, brought a different kind of emotional intensity to the night. Her words about finding light even in difficult moments felt deeply personal, yet widely relatable.

Celebrating Global Influence and Breakthrough Moments

The global reach of the event was clear throughout the evening.

BINI received the Global Force Award, reinforcing the growing influence of international artists on the global stage. Similarly, The Beaches were recognized for their impact, representing a genre that has historically been dominated by men.

Zara Larsson, honored with the Breakthrough Award, offered a refreshingly honest take on success. Rather than attributing her rise to a single moment, she spoke about the gradual process of growth, including the importance of surrounding herself with the right people and taking ownership of her creative work.

It was a reminder that what looks like an “overnight success” is rarely that simple.

Zara Larsson performs on stage at the Billboard Women in Music 2026 held at the Hollywood Palladium on April 29, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.

Defining Vision and Legacy

One of the most powerful segments of the evening came from Teyana Taylor, who accepted the Visionary Award from Dionne Warwick.

Her words captured something that felt central to the entire event, that women don’t wait for permission to create, they build, transform, and redefine. It wasn’t just a speech, it felt like a statement about the direction the industry is moving in.

Similarly, Thalía, honored with the Icon Award by Eva Longoria, spoke about legacy not as something individual, but as something that opens doors for others.

That idea, of progress being shared rather than owned, seemed to connect many of the night’s moments.

A Room Full of Influence

Beyond the stage, the room itself reflected the scale of the event.

With presenters and attendees including Bella Poarch, Cara Delevingne, Victoria Monét, Coco Jones, and many others, it felt like a gathering of voices from across different parts of the industry, all contributing to a shared narrative.

Even behind the scenes, the impact extended further. Billboard partnered with birthFUND to bring attention to maternal health, adding another layer of purpose to the event.

More Than an Awards Show

What stood out most to me wasn’t any single performance or award, but the overall atmosphere.

There was a sense that this wasn’t just about celebrating success, it was about recognizing progress, acknowledging challenges, and reinforcing the idea that the industry is changing in meaningful ways.

Events like this often risk feeling repetitive, but this one didn’t. It felt current, relevant, and connected to what’s actually happening in music right now.

Final Thoughts

The Billboard Women in Music 2026 was a reminder that recognition matters, but so does representation, voice, and perspective.

From the Women of the Year honorees to the rising artists and established icons, the night reflected a wide spectrum of talent and experience. And more importantly, it showed how those voices are not only being heard, but are actively shaping the future of the industry.

And if this year is any indication, that future is only becoming more dynamic, more inclusive, and more powerful with every passing moment.

Zira Uzbek Kitchen — Plov (Beef & Vegetables)

7422 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Founded by Azim Rahmatov, Zira Uzbek Kitchen brings the authentic flavors and hospitality of Uzbekistan to the heart of Los Angeles — and Masters of Taste was the perfect stage for it. Their Plov — a beautifully spiced dish of tender slow-cooked beef, carrots, chickpeas, daikon radish, and pomegranate seeds — was one of the most unexpected and memorable stops of the afternoon. Complex, warming, and deeply satisfying even without the rice.

Paradise Dynasty — Black Truffle Xiao Long Bao & Crispy Prawn with Mayo and Walnut

177 Caruso Ave, Glendale, CA 91210

The acclaimed Singapore-born dumpling house brought two showstoppers to the field. Their Black Truffle Xiao Long Bao — a dramatic dark-wrapped soup dumpling filled with seasoned pork and earthy truffle — burst with flavor. Their Crispy Prawn tossed in creamy mayonnaise with crunchy walnuts was equally impressive: rich, sweet, and satisfying. Two masterful bites from one of LA’s finest dim sum destinations.

Le Shrimp Noodle Bar — Ebiko Prawn Ball Dry Noodle

Chef Eddie (Boon Chun) Foo’s Ebiko Prawn Ball Dry Noodle was a punchy, savory bowl of noodles topped with a plump prawn ball, ebiko roe, shredded cucumber, green onion, and a deeply flavored house sauce. A bowl full of Southeast Asian character and soul.

Bone Kettle — Indonesian Chicken Satay

67 N Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103

Old Town Pasadena’s beloved family-run Southeast Asian kitchen is practically a hometown hero at Masters of Taste. Their Indonesian Chicken Satay — char-grilled thighs lacquered in sweet soy sauce, served with peanut sauce and fresh pickled vegetables — was one of the festival’s most craveable bites. Chef Erwin Tjahyadi and his family have built something truly special in the heart of Pasadena’s restaurant row, and it showed.

Maple Block Meat Co. — Hot Honey Glazed Baby Back Rib

3973 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City, CA 90230

Making their Masters of Taste debut this year, Maple Block Meat Co. arrived with one of the festival’s most straightforwardly satisfying dishes. A single peach wood-smoked baby back rib glazed in hot honey — sweet, spicy, smoky, tender. This Culver City BBQ institution didn’t need to do anything flashy. The product spoke entirely for itself.

Boa Santa — Pani Puri with Spicy Tuna, Avocado & Passion Fruit Leche de Tigre

Chef Brendan Collins reimagined the beloved Indian street food classic with California flair — a crispy puri shell filled with fresh spicy tuna, creamy avocado, and passion fruit leche de tigre. It was a brilliant one-bite fusion that honored two culinary traditions at once, and arguably the most creative single bite of the day.

Sushi Roku — Baked Crab Handroll

Also making their Masters of Taste debut in 2026, Sushi Roku arrived with the kind of quiet confidence that great sushi restaurants carry. Their baked crab handroll — wrapped in soy paper, drizzled with house sauce, served with fresh wasabi — was clean, elegant, and effortlessly satisfying. A reminder of why Sushi Roku has been a staple of upscale Japanese dining in Los Angeles for years.

City Club LA — Duck Carnitas Tostada

Chef Armando Quiroz

A gluten-free tostada piled high with duck carnitas, hibiscus-pickled onions, cotija cheese, pickled kumquat, fresh herbs, and avocado. This was one of the most compositionally complex bites of the afternoon — every element thoughtfully layered, the rich duck meat balanced by bright, acidic toppings. City Club LA demonstrated that elevated Mexican-inspired cuisine belongs firmly in the festival’s top tier.

Panda Inn — Orange Chicken & Beef Short Ribs

201 N Maryland Ave, Glendale, CA 91206

Not Panda Express — Panda Inn is the original full-service restaurant from which the beloved fast food chain was born, and the difference is immediately apparent. Their orange chicken was crispier and more vibrant than what most people know from the drive-through. The slow-cooked beef short ribs with chopped chili sauce were tender, deeply flavored, and genuinely impressive. A taste of Chinese-American culinary history, right on the Rose Bowl field.

Yakiya — A5 Ribeye with Kimchi Fried Rice

Chef Hualing Zhang’s offering was arguably the single most luxurious bite of the entire festival. A slice of A5 Wagyu ribeye — the highest grade of Japanese beef, prized for its extraordinary intramuscular fat and buttery texture — served over kimchi fried rice with garlic bone marrow. Rich, silky, and utterly unforgettable. The kind of bite that stops conversation.

Alexander’s Steakhouse — Kushiyaki Beef Skewer

111 N Los Robles Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101

California’s pioneer of Wagyu mastery, Alexander’s Steakhouse has been redefining the American steakhouse with Japanese-inspired precision since 2005. Their Kushiyaki beef skewers — grilled with tare, black pepper, negi sauce, and scallions — were served two to a plate, and even in that small format, the quality of the beef was unmistakable. A fitting close to the festival’s savory lineup from one of Pasadena’s finest.

The Sweet Masters

Läderach Switzerland — Milk Chocolate & Berry Chocolate

Swiss chocolatier Läderach brought two squares of their signature FrischSchoggi to the Rose Bowl field — one milk chocolate with hazelnuts, one berry-infused pink chocolate — and they were a reminder of what truly great chocolate tastes like. Smooth, complex, and deeply satisfying.

Vanilla/Lemon Ice Cream & Mais Con Queso / White Coffee Ice Cream

Two artisan ice cream tastings rounded out the sweet offerings — a pale, delicate vanilla-lemon scoop and a White Coffee flavor that was rich and aromatic. Small cups, big impact.

ID Eclair — Tomate d’Amour

The most theatrical single bite of the festival: a cherry tomato dipped in caramel glaze and served with vanilla pesto. Sweet, tangy, and surprising — a reminder that the best food ideas are often the simplest ones, perfectly executed.

More Than a Food Festival

Masters of Taste 2026 was the eighth annual edition of what has quietly become one of Los Angeles’ most important culinary events. The brainchild of Rob and Leslie Levy — owners of The Raymond 1886 and Knox & Dobson in Pasadena — the festival was inspired by a childhood friend’s organization in Chicago called Inspiration Café, which delivers sandwiches to people experiencing homelessness.

What started as a local idea has grown into something remarkable. Over 3,000 guests. More than 100 culinary, beverage, and sweet masters. And every dollar raised going directly to Union Station Homeless Services — the largest homeless services provider in the San Gabriel Valley, serving over 4,000 individuals and families each year.

This year, the connection between the festival and its beneficiary grew even deeper. Many of the chefs and restaurant partners committed to hiring graduates of Union Station’s culinary workforce training program — creating a direct bridge from homelessness to employment to long-term stability.

“This is not just training, it’s not just food,” Union Station leadership said at the event. “It’s a direct bridge from homelessness, to employment, to long-term stability.”

Twenty-two dishes. A dozen cuisines. One field. One cause. Masters of Taste 2026 proved, once again, that great food and genuine purpose make the best pairing of all.

Beyond the culinary excellence, Masters of Taste continues to stand out for its philanthropic mission. Every dollar raised from the event directly benefits Union Station Homeless Services, an organization that has spent over five decades working to end homelessness across the San Gabriel Valley.

With a remarkable 97% success rate in permanently housing individuals, Union Station’s work focuses on long-term solutions through outreach, housing, and community integration. Over the past seven years, Masters of Taste has contributed more than $3.5 million to support these efforts.

By bringing together top-tier culinary talent, a diverse range of flavors, and a strong philanthropic purpose, the festival created an experience that went beyond dining—it became a celebration of community, creativity, and impact.

Where Flavor Meets Purpose

As the sun set over the Rose Bowl, the event left behind more than satisfied palates. It reinforced a powerful idea: that food has the ability not only to bring people together, but also to drive meaningful change.

In Los Angeles, where culinary innovation is constant, Masters of Taste continues to stand out—not just for what’s on the plate, but for what it represents.
