Where are you originally from? Tell us about your upbringing:
I’m from a very small town; Middletown, Delaware. It was exactly how you would imagine a small town from Delaware to be… a lot of farmland, a good number of generational families born and raised there; and everybody knows everybody. My parents still live there, and it holds a special place in my heart- but I was also very glad to get out of there and experience different places and opportunities.
How did you find your passion?
I’ve always had an intense passion for all things beauty. I started my career as a makeup artist working through NARS Cosmetics and independently as a wedding and celebrity makeup artist. Although my career was blossoming, I dreamed of creating a business for myself. To me, true success meant being able to shape my own life, dictate my time, and create a legacy for my future family. In 2014, I left my full-time job and started my own studio. My business began to take off very quickly and I’ve had to teach myself how to navigate and overcome every situation that has come up. Over the years I’ve found I’m hands-down most passionate about business-strategy; growing and scaling the business, and helping others learn the same.
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty is not only physical, it is such an all-encompassing feeling that someone gives you when being in their presence. People that radiate happiness and love are the most beautiful to me.
What is your creative process?
I am a problem solver, so for me taking on an experience, whether it be a business issue that needs direction or a plan, or even in my beauty artistry- I take the overall bigger picture of the project and then break that picture down into many pieces. I take those smaller pieces and effectively prioritize and delegate the components in the most efficient manner they can be achieved. So I guess you could say I’m pretty methodical with my process? I’d have to say so much of it is dependent on my instincts, flow and the way those certain components make me feel. I go in any direction that brings positive energy to my conscience.
What is the favorite project that you’ve worked on?
I have to say, I’ve had a lot of really cool experiences in my career, but my favorite is by far the current project I am working on; which is mentoring other successful, or up and coming beauty business owners. I’m finally at the point in my career when I can sit back and really focus my energy on the things I love, rather than the things I “need” to do to be successful. Being able to educate others on my passion, and seeing them succeed because of it is the coolest feeling.
Another one of my favorite projects was the shoot with you and Anne Bowen in Jamaica. We shot with a helicopter, ancient ruin site and gorgeous wedding dresses. It was quite the adventure!
How do you achieve higher consciousness?
I believe a big part of becoming your highest self is truly envisioning and embodying what that looks like, or feels like to you. I visualize, I practice gratitude every day, and I am a huge believer of the Law of Attraction, because it has been so vital to the success of my business and my personal growth. To be honest, my vibrations changed immeasurably when I became a mom. The love and gratitude I vibrate daily for my girls has raised every level of consciousness in my life. You learn that nothing happens by chance, that this is life living through you.
Why is gratitude so important?
Besides having innumerable health-benefits, showing gratitude helps you to feel more connected to yourself, others become drawn to your energy, and it is a direct way to communicate and feel connected with the Universe.
One’s reality is achieved through the thoughts one believes in their head. How do you take a thought and manifest it into your dreams?
When I say this, it sounds almost too good to be true- but you really just have to think and imagine, with complete certainty, that THIS is what is going to happen in your life. Visualize it, speak it, practice gratitude around it. The Universe is listening to you, what are you saying to it?
I will never forget one of the craziest things I manifested, it still makes me smile to this day. I went on a “positive energy, manifestation” kick one night, and posted a long status on my Facebook about how “everything in your life happens for a reason, if you put good out into the Universe, the Universe will bring good back to you, tenfold.” I remember I was feeling on cloud nine that night, just really happy with my career and how things were going. I went to sleep with that gratitude and good thoughts. The next day, I got a call from the tour manager of Coldplay (my favorite band of all time), out of nowhere, asking me to do male grooming for Chris Martin for a local event. Talk about insane. When I met the tour manager, she was young, vibrant and we connected so naturally on our beliefs about the Universe and Law of Attraction. I knew at that moment that’s exactly what led her to me.
Everyone has a past…sometimes, it can be quite dark. How would you suggest letting go of your past so that you can achieve great results for the future?
We all still feel darkness at times. You have to understand that your past shapes you, but it does not define you. How you view and overcome your past is monumental. Acknowledge the darkness, honor it for what it was, how it shaped you… and then let it go. Once you learn that life is happening through you, and not “to you” it will help you learn to propel yourself forward.
What is the best way of connecting with someone?
Being physically and mentally present with them; sharing experiences.
How would you recommend anybody to take their career to the next level?
Define what your goals are. Figure out what is standing in your way and come up with a plan to problem solve around it. Get over your limiting beliefs and start asking yourself what you need to do in order to take the steps you need to move the needle forward towards your goals. Take that list of steps and focus your priorities on the steps that will bring the most change to your life.
Any advice to aspiring artists?
When I tell you that anything is possible, I truly mean that. Get out of your own head, this is your sign to do something you’ve always dreamed of doing. If a girl from a tiny town in Delaware can do it by herself, so can you. It’s all in your mindset, I promise you!
Who inspires you?
Right now I am so inspired by women who are learning to integrate their high level businesses with motherhood. Jenna Kutcher is someone I really admire for real life-navigation; same goes for a lot of women she has on her podcast. We really can live the dream and have our work and our families… it just takes a mind shift ! I love that.
What projects are you working on now?
I am finishing up a huge project that I’m really excited about- I’m getting ready to launch my 7-Figure Foundation course, which teaches my complete formula for creating and operating a high level beauty business. I’ve seen so many artists and stylists go solo and start their own companies in the past year, and now they’re feeling a bit of burnout and unsure which steps to take to expand their business to ensure longevity and help them to take a step back from taking clients 1:1 so they can focus on growing the business and getting some of their time back. It’ll be more of a high-touch group coaching program, and then of course, I will still be taking 1:1 clients on a limited basis for mentorship.
How would you describe success?
True success is waking up every day knowing your purpose, and feeling at peace and excited with the direction your life is going. It’s knowing that your actions are positively impacting the life of your family and others around the world.
