On January 5th, 2024, in Los Angeles, the Morrison Hotel Gallery, renowned for its rock n’ roll photography, announced its foray into fine art photography. This new chapter will be commemorated on January 13th with the opening of “The New Wave,” a stunning collection of oceanic photographs from around the world. This collection draws inspiration from HBO’s acclaimed documentary series “100 Foot Wave,” a collaborative effort of Amplify Pictures, Library Films, and Topic Studios, and winner of both PGA and Emmy® awards.
Adam Block, CEO of Morrison Hotel Gallery, expressed the gallery’s historical focus on rock ‘n roll imagery and its evolution in 2024 to encompass the energy and expressiveness of rock n’ roll through oceanic themes, celebrating the sea, surfers, and the photographers who capture this beauty. Joe Lewis, executive producer and CEO of Amplify Pictures, conveyed excitement about partnering with Morrison Hotel Gallery for this collection, highlighting the parallel between big wave surfing and rock and roll in terms of pushing artistic boundaries.
The exhibition, occurring for one night only, will display large-scale photographs from international photographers, showcasing the beauty and intensity of big wave surfing. This event will be held at 5801 Washington Blvd in Culver City from 6 – 9 pm on January 13th. “The New Wave Collection,” curated by Timothy White of Morrison Hotel Gallery, features never-before-seen works by photographers like Tim McKenna, Fred Pompermayer, Helio Antonio, Laurent Masurel, Erik Aeder, among others.
The event, a collaboration with Amplify Pictures, Library Films, and Topic Studios, celebrates “100 Foot Wave’s” six Emmy® nominations. The collection aims to reflect the creativity and daring of both photographers and surfers, capturing the ocean’s beauty, power, and rhythm.
Following the event, “The New Wave Collection” will be exhibited at Morrison Hotel Gallery, with artworks available for purchase both at the event and online. The HBO docuseries “100 Foot Wave,” directed by Chris Smith and executive produced by Joe Lewis, Ryan Heller, Michael Bloom, and Maria Zuckerman for Topic Studios, has been integral to this venture.
