Buying an EV? Here’s What You Need to Know First

With the cost of gas prices, it’s not difficult to see why electric vehicles have become more popular than ever before. In the UK, by February 2022 there were more than 400,000 electric vehicles on the roads, and that’s now doubled.

Whether you’ve chosen to switch over from an internal custom combustion engine to an electric vehicle, or you’re still weighing up the pros and cons, you need to know some things about electric vehicles before you go ahead and spend your money. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you need to know before you do that.

  1. Scope out your charging options. An electric vehicle is only going to run for so long before it needs to be recharged just like any other battery powered appliance. You need to make sure that you have an ultra fast EV Charger to keep up with your needs on the road. Can also help to check out what your charging options are for your home and whether or not you can get a solar powered electric vehicle charger installed. How about locally? Does your workplace have electric vehicle charges or your local shopping mall? These kinds of questions need to be asked because what if you’re stuck somewhere and you’re low on charge if you don’t have enough battery to get home?
  2. Download multiple apps. There are plenty of electric vehicle apps out there, but different apps have different specialties and uses. It’s always a good idea to cover your bases too. So you need an app that corresponds with the car manufacturer, and you need a charging app for when you’re on the go, but you also need an app that helps you to plan your journey ahead of time in terms of how much battery life you have versus where you’d like to go.
  3. Learn as much as you can about battery health. The health of your electric vehicle battery is just as important as how much time you have left on it before it’s going to run out. You want to avoid battery degradation, so to do that you don’t fully charge it to 100% every single time you charge it. Overcharging can damage the battery of your electric vehicle as much as it can your phone or your laptop. You might have noticed that devices have run out of battery faster when they have been subjected to constant battery charging.
  4. Talk to a solar installer about an electric vehicle charger at home. If you have the option to have a home charger installed and you’re a homeowner, go for it. Choosing a solar version is going to save you a lot of money and electricity charges because then your solar charger can be charged with the power of the sun. If you have a smart home charger, you’ll also save a lot more money compared to if you stick to using a general plug because home chargers are much more efficient.
