UK-based sales and distribution company Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide sales (excluding Brazil) for the eccentric horror feature Bowels of Hell, ahead of its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) later this month. The film has been selected to screen in the festival’s Harbour section, a strand known for championing bold, distinctive, and unconventional voices in contemporary cinema.

A Surreal Horror Rooted in Trauma and Motherhood
Bowels of Hell tells the story of Malu, a woman slowly unraveling under the weight of unresolved trauma and the pressures of raising a rebellious child. Her already fragile reality descends into a grotesque nightmare when a mysterious curse transforms ordinary toilets into deadly monsters. What unfolds is a surreal and unsettling journey where themes of motherhood, grief, and existential terror collide—forces that cannot simply be flushed away.
Blending dark humor with body horror and psychological dread, the film uses absurdity as a lens to explore deeply human emotions. Its imaginative premise serves as a metaphor for suppressed pain and domestic anxiety, transforming familiar spaces into sites of fear and emotional reckoning.
Visionary Filmmakers with a Cult Sensibility
The film is written and directed by Gustavo Vinagre and Gurcius Gewdner, two filmmakers celebrated for their distinctive, transgressive storytelling styles. Vinagre is a Berlinale Teddy Award winner for Three Tidy Tigers Tied a Tie Tighter, while Gewdner is known for cult underground works such as Pazucus: Island of Vomit and Despair.
Speaking about the project, the directors described the film as an expression of affection for the horror genre infused with emotional warmth:
“We made Bowels of Hell out of a deep affection for horror and with the playful sensibility of childhood — a space where fear becomes tender, and imagination turns darkness into something strangely loving.”
This approach positions the film as both confrontational and intimate, using genre elements to uncover vulnerability rather than relying solely on shock value.
Produced by Acclaimed Brazilian Powerhouse RT Features
Bowels of Hell is produced by Rodrigo Teixeira, Berta Marchiori, and Tereza Alvarez for RT Features, one of Brazil’s most internationally respected production companies. RT Features is known for backing high-profile, award-winning films including Call Me By Your Name, I’m Still Here, and Robert Eggers’ genre-defining horror The Witch.
The company’s involvement underscores the film’s ambition and cinematic pedigree, blending arthouse sensibilities with provocative genre filmmaking.
A Strong Ensemble Cast
The film features a compelling ensemble cast led by Martha Nowill (Netflix’s Pedaço de Mim) in the central role of Malu. She is joined by Otávio Müller (Alemão: Both Sides of the Operation), Chandelly Braz (Netflix’s Maria e o Cangaço), Marco Pigossi (High Tide, SXSW), Regina Braga (Deus Nos Acuda), and Olivia Torres (I’m Still Here).
The cast also includes appearances by Brazilian screen legend Maria Gladys (Rat Fever) and acclaimed artist and filmmaker Bruce LaBruce, adding further cultural and artistic weight to the production.
Blue Finch Films on a Growing Genre Slate
Mike Chapman of Blue Finch Films praised the project, stating:
“Bowels of Hell is both a provocative and bold piece of filmmaking from Gustavo and Gurcius. Combining jaw-dropping genre moments and profound themes, it will stick with viewers for a multitude of reasons.”
The acquisition adds to Blue Finch’s expanding international slate, which currently includes the acclaimed horror Dolly (premiered at Fantastic Fest), the sci-fi horror Affection starring Jessica Rothe, and the upcoming BBC Film title Mission, starring *George MacKay.
With its Rotterdam premiere and EFM launch ahead, Bowels of Hell is poised to become one of the most talked-about genre titles of the year.
