A Long Weekend in Indian Wells, the Quieter End of the Palm Springs Desert

Palm Springs gets the bachelorette parties. Indian Wells gets the tennis and a slower pace that the west end of the Coachella Valley mostly gave up years ago. The city sits about 20 minutes southeast of Palm Springs, between Palm Desert and La Quinta, and counted 4,757 residents in the 2020 census. This is a guide for people who want the resort weekend with fewer people in the frame. Three nights is enough. Four is better.

When to go

The season runs roughly from November through April. That is when outdoor dinners are comfortable and the hillside trails are pleasant instead of punishing. Summer highs routinely pass 110°F, and much of the valley slows down to match. A desert weekend in August is a pool weekend and nothing more.

Within the season, our pick is late January into early March. February evenings still call for a jacket, which makes a patio dinner feel earned. If you want tennis, plan for March and book early.

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden is the reason most first-timers hear of the city at all. According to Wikipedia, the complex opened in March 2000, holds 29 courts, and its Stadium 1 seats 16,100, which makes it the second-largest outdoor tennis stadium in the world after Arthur Ashe in New York. It hosts the BNP Paribas Open, a combined ATP and WTA event, and the tournament’s own site lists the next edition for February 28 to March 14, 2027.

The outer courts in the first week are the best value in professional tennis; you can stand a few feet from top players warming up. The east valley also fills up fast for those two weeks, so a March trip is either about the tournament or it is not. Splitting the difference gets you the traffic and none of the tickets.

El Paseo, the mile that makes Palm Desert worth the drive

Indian Wells is mostly residential and club property, so much of the shopping and casual dining happens a few minutes west on El Paseo in Palm Desert. It runs about a mile, lined with galleries, boutiques and restaurant patios, and it is the kind of street where you park once and walk the rest of the afternoon.

Eat lunch here rather than dinner. The Santa Rosa Mountains rise just south of the street, and midday light in February makes the whole block look staged. Save dinner for your hotel, or a club if you have the invitation.

See the mountains before breakfast

The desert rewards early risers. By 10 a.m. on a sunny day the exposed trails are already warm, so plan hikes for first light and leave the afternoon for the pool. The easiest way to figure out which trail suits your knees is to drive south on Highway 74 to the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center, about four miles from the Highway 111 intersection in Palm Desert. Monument staff will talk through trail options, and maps and reference books are for sale.

The Bureau of Land Management currently lists the center as open Friday through Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, and closing at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Federal hours change, so check that page the week you travel. If the doors are shut, the 0.2-mile Ed Hastey Garden Trail loops around the building and makes a decent introduction to low-desert plants. Congress established the monument in October 2000.

If you have children along, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens on Portola Avenue in Palm Desert has been open since 1970 and keeps its focus on desert species rather than trying to be every zoo at once.

How private club life works in Indian Wells

Much of Indian Wells sits behind gates, and visitors tend to assume that puts the best golf and dining permanently out of reach. Guest rules are set club by club, and they decide who can bring whom, how often, and to what. If you know a member, ask what their club allows before you plan a round around it.

Toscana Country Club is a good example of what sits behind those gates. It describes itself as a private equity club and residential community in Indian Wells, minutes from El Paseo, laid out like an Italian hill town with a piazza and a clock tower. The golf is two 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, North and South.

The club says membership goes through a formal approval process, so for visitors who fall for the place, the route from guest to member runs through that approval, whatever else you buy along the way. Anyone weighing a second home in the east valley should understand how a club’s membership works before touring houses, and you can learn more about membership here. Ask each club what its membership process requires.

How this fits into a longer stay

Indian Wells is a place people come back to, then come back to for longer. A three-night weekend turns into a month in February, then a season. If that sounds familiar, David’s Guide has covered settling in somewhere for a season, and the east Coachella Valley is one of the easier places in America to try it. The travel section and the restaurant guides cover more of the wider region.

One last piece of practical advice: fly into Palm Springs International, rent a car, and drive east. Plan your driving times individually, especially for the monument visitor center on Highway 74.
