High Ground Brings Yosemite’s Infamous 1976 Drug Plane Mystery to North American Cinemas

Director Daniel Sharp’s documentary revisits a notorious crash, the climbers drawn into its aftermath and the true events behind one of Yosemite’s most enduring legends.

Some stories become part of a place’s identity, passed from one generation to the next until the line between history and folklore begins to blur. In Yosemite National Park, one such story began in December 1976, when a small aircraft carrying tonnes of marijuana crashed into a frozen lake, drawing a community of climbers into an extraordinary chain of events.

Now, nearly 50 years later, the documentary High Ground is bringing that story to the big screen. Directed and produced by Daniel Sharp, the film begins its North American theatrical tour on October 25, 2026, at Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema in Tahoe City, California, before continuing through independent cinemas and special screening venues into January 2027.

The Crash That Became a Climbing Legend

The incident unfolded when an aircraft carrying two pilots and several tonnes of Mexican marijuana disappeared over Yosemite. The plane struck trees above Lower Merced Pass Lake before crashing through the ice. Park rangers recovered what they could, but winter conditions left much of the wreckage inaccessible until spring.

The frozen landscape, however, did not keep the story contained. Young climbers from Camp 4, a gathering place for Yosemite’s climbing community, made difficult journeys through the snow to reach the wreckage. What followed extended far beyond the discovery of a crashed plane, drawing in drug investigators and federal authorities while generating a story that would endure among climbers for decades.

High Ground returns to these events through firsthand accounts from people connected to the story, including climbers, park rangers, investigators and the pilots’ families. Among those featured are Ken Yager, Kevin Worrall, Dale Bard, Dean Fidelman, Vern Clevenger and Rick Cashner, alongside former Yosemite ranger Tim Setnicka.

Rather than focusing solely on the sensational details of the crash, the documentary examines how an extraordinary episode became embedded in the culture and collective memory of Yosemite.

Separating History From Folklore

Part of the film’s appeal lies in the gap between what happened and how the story has been retold over the years. Through interviews, archival photographs and original footage, Sharp revisits a period when a remote wilderness setting intersected with a criminal investigation and an unconventional outdoor community.

The result brings together adventure, mystery, humor and historical reflection. For climbing enthusiasts, the film offers a look at an era that helped shape Yosemite’s cultural mythology. For audiences unfamiliar with the climbing world, it presents a remarkable true story involving an isolated crash site, unexpected discoveries and questions that continued long after the immediate events.

The documentary has already attracted attention from outdoor and regional publications. The San Francisco Chronicle described it as “An outrageously delicious story,” while Outside called it “Spooky, weird, fun, and legitimately dangerous.”

A Theatrical Tour Leading Into the 50th Anniversary

The release arrives as the December 1976 crash approaches its 50th anniversary, giving the film an opportunity to revisit the incident at a moment when its place in Yosemite history is especially significant.

The tour will include screenings at independent cinemas across California, New Mexico, Oregon, Colorado, Nevada and Idaho. Select engagements will feature special guests and audience question-and-answer sessions, with outreach planned for climbing communities, outdoor organizations and local audiences.
