The verdict first
Book Passalacqua for privacy, Grand Hotel Tremezzo for the classic lake holiday, Villa d’Este for ceremony and scale, Il Sereno for modern design. There is no single winner on Lake Como, because these four hotels sell four different trips, and the wrong match wastes serious money at every one of these rates.
That is the whole decision. Everything below is the evidence, hotel by hotel, rate by rate, complaint by complaint, so you can match the trip you actually want to the hotel that actually delivers it. If you want the wider context first, start with our guide to the best hotels in the world, then come back here for the Como decision itself.
The four hotels at a glance
| Passalacqua | Grand Hotel Tremezzo | Villa d’Este | Il Sereno | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starting rate checked Oct 2026 | From about EUR 900 low season, Travel and Retreat 2026 guide | From about EUR 650, Travel and Retreat 2026 guide | From EUR 1,150 for a Classic Room, official Villa d’Este site | From EUR 950, Luxury Travel Magazine 2026 reopening report |
| Rooms | 24 rooms and suites in 3 buildings | 84 rooms and suites, Preferred Hotels listing | 152 rooms and suites in 2 buildings, plus private villas | 40 suites, all suites, no standard rooms |
| Best for | Couples who want a private house, not a hotel | First time Como visitors who want it all in one place | Milestone trips, traditionalists, car lovers in May | Design lovers who find the grand hotels theatrical |
| Pool and spa | Lake view outdoor pool, spa in the Palazz vaults, heated indoor pool in an 18th century underground gallery | Three pools including the floating pool on the lake, three level T Spa in Villa Emilia | Heated floating pool on the lake, indoor pool, Beauty Centre spa, 25 acre park | 60 foot freshwater infinity pool suspended over the lake, Valmont spa under century old arches |
| Location | Moltrasio, western shore | Tremezzina, western shore, facing Bellagio, next to Villa Carlotta | Cernobbio, western shore, closest of the four to Como town | Torno, about 8 km from Como station, the quietest village setting of the four |
| The catch | Dinner consistency is the contested point in guest reviews, and the small pool fills fast | Restaurant service is hit or miss in recent reviews despite the setting | Everything costs extra, and some entry rooms feel tired for the price | One restaurant, a small pool deck, and few dining options within walking distance |
Passalacqua vs Grand Hotel Tremezzo: which is better?
This is the strangest head to head on the lake, because the same family owns both. The De Santis family bought Passalacqua in 2018 and also run Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and Valentina De Santis leads both. So the choice is not about ownership standards. It is about scale and intent.
Passalacqua is a private villa that accepts guests. The 18th century villa in Moltrasio was built in 1787 on land once owned by Pope Innocent XI, and Bellini composed La Sonnambula there in 1831. After a three year restoration it opened in June 2022 with just 24 rooms split across three buildings, the Villa with 12, the Palazz with 8, and Casa al Lago with 4. Seven acres, eight terraces, and a private jetty serve those 24 rooms. Dining by chef Viviana Varese is residents only, in an open kitchen format you can walk into. Read our full Passalacqua review for the room by room breakdown, including the 250 sqm Suite Bellini, the largest suite on Lake Como per the hotel.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo is the opposite proposition. Opened in 1910 in an Art Nouveau palace, it holds 84 rooms and suites per the Preferred Hotels listing, faces Bellagio straight across the water, and sits in a park of about 20,000 sqm next to Villa Carlotta. A typical Prestige room runs about 35 sqm. It has three pools, five restaurants and bars, a private beach club, vintage motor launches, and the three level T Spa inside the 18th century Villa Emilia. New for 2026, per the Travel and Retreat guide, are park view junior suites and access to CASABIANCA, a restored 1930s villa housing part of the family art collection.

The verdict is simple. Book Passalacqua when the hotel itself is the destination and you want staff who know your name by the second morning. Book Tremezzo when you want choice, energy, a beach club, and a Bellagio view, and you accept that a bigger hotel runs less personally. On price, Tremezzo usually opens lower, from about EUR 650 in the Travel and Retreat 2026 guide and from GBP 900 including breakfast in the hotel 2026 season release, against Passalacqua from about EUR 900 in low season and peak standard rooms reported north of EUR 2,500.
Passalacqua vs Villa d’Este: which is better?
This is the real title fight, the new icon against the original icon.
Villa d’Este is the address every other Como hotel is measured against. The villa in Cernobbio was built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and has operated as a hotel since 1873. It holds 152 rooms and suites across the Cardinal Building and the Queen’s Pavilion, plus private villas inside a 25 acre park. Entry Classic Rooms run 32 to 42 sqm and start from EUR 1,150 per night on the official site, checked October 2026. Executive Rooms run 30 to 50 sqm from EUR 1,250, and lake view Deluxe Rooms start from EUR 1,390. The heated floating pool sits on the lake itself, and the estate adds an indoor pool, a Beauty Centre spa, eight tennis courts, and the Veranda restaurant for formal dining, with the Grill as the relaxed alternative. In May the grounds host the Concorso d’Eleganza, the classic car weekend that fills the hotel a year out.

Passalacqua counters with intimacy and current form. It took No.1 on the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels list in 2023. On the 2026 list it ranks No.5, and it also took Best Hotel in Europe and the Best Boutique Hotel Award for the third consecutive year. Villa d’Este, checked against both the full 2026 top 50 and the extended 51 to 100 list, does not appear on either. Neither do Tremezzo or Il Sereno. That absence does not make Villa d’Este a lesser stay. It does mean Passalacqua is the hotel the current voting academy rewards, and Villa d’Este is the hotel history rewards.
Choose Villa d’Este for a wedding anniversary, a multigenerational trip, or any stay where the ceremony is the point, where a doorman, a sweeping staircase, and 150 years of practice matter. Choose Passalacqua for a two or three night escape where 24 rooms, a residents only dining room, and the highest rated breakfast on the lake matter more than a tennis court. If it helps, place both inside the wider Italian context in our guide to the best boutique hotels in Italy, where Passalacqua carries the boutique argument and Villa d’Este deliberately does not compete in that category at all.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo vs Villa d’Este: which is better?
Both are grand hotels. They differ in temperature.
Tremezzo is warm, colorful, and social. Its five dining venues range from La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi, serving the dishes of the late maestro on the terrace facing Bellagio, to Da Giacomo al Lago for seafood at the beach club, L’Escale for trattoria cooking and a deep wine cellar, and T Pizza in the park. The floating pool, called Water on the Water, the Flowers Pool in the garden, and the T Spa infinity pool give you three different swims in one stay. Rates open lower than Villa d’Este, and the mood is holiday first, history second.
Villa d’Este is formal, hushed, and self contained. Guests routinely spend whole days inside the 25 acre park without feeling they have missed the lake, because the lake comes to them, at the floating pool, at the Veranda terrace, and on the courtesy boat to Como. The service style is ceremonial rather than familial. The bill reflects that. Recent guests praise the value of the experience and still flag that everything, from drinks to extras, is priced at the top of the market.
Book Tremezzo for a honeymoon or a first Como trip based mid lake, with Bellagio a short boat ride away and Varenna and Villa del Balbianello in easy reach. Book Villa d’Este if you are basing near Como town, arriving by car from Milan, or timing the trip around the Concorso d’Eleganza. For families, Tremezzo has the easier energy. For a formal celebration, Villa d’Este has no rival on the lake.
Where does Il Sereno fit?
Il Sereno is the control sample. Opened in August 2016 in Torno, it was the first new building on this shoreline in decades, and it refuses every grand hotel convention. Milanese designer Patricia Urquiola designed the building and interiors in stone, walnut, bronze, and glass, with a vertical garden and a floating walnut staircase. It is the sister hotel to Le Sereno in St Barths, from the Contreras family Sereno Hotels group.

There are 40 suites and no standard rooms. Entry Lario Suites run about 538 to 678 sq ft per Private Upgrades, every suite faces the lake with floor to ceiling glass and a private terrace, and the penthouse runs to about 2,000 sq ft. The 60 foot freshwater infinity pool hangs over the water. The Valmont spa sits under arches that predate the hotel by centuries. Dining is the sharpest single offer of the four, Il Sereno Al Lago, holding one Michelin star under executive chef Raffaele Lenzi, whose cooking leans vegetable forward and precise. The restaurant launched in the Berton era, and Lenzi is the name on the current menus, checked October 2026. New for 2026 is Al Tramonto, a five table sunset dining setup, plus the Darsena Listening Suite for vinyl sessions.
Rates start from EUR 950 per night in the Luxury Travel Magazine 2026 reopening report, which puts Il Sereno between Tremezzo and Villa d’Este on entry price, for a suite sized room the others charge far more for. The trade is facilities. One main restaurant, one pool, a small spa, and a quiet village with limited alternatives nearby. If modern design is your luxury language, that trade is not a compromise. It is the point.
The ranking question, answered plainly
On The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026, announced in Paris on September 15, 2026, Passalacqua is No.5, Best Hotel in Europe, and Best Boutique Hotel for the third consecutive year. Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa d’Este, and Il Sereno appear nowhere on the 2026 top 50, and nowhere on the extended 51 to 100 list either. Both lists were checked in full for this article in October 2026.
Read that correctly. The 50 Best academy favors small, owner led, personality driven hotels, which structurally favors a 24 room villa over a 152 room institution. Villa d’Este does not need the list. Tremezzo and Il Sereno collect other honors, including Michelin Keys and Condé Nast Traveler readers awards for Il Sereno in 2025. But if a current world ranking is your deciding factor, the decision makes itself, and it points to Passalacqua every time.
Winner by traveler type
Best for couples on a short escape: Passalacqua
Two or three nights, residents only dining, a spa in the Palazz vaults, and grounds that feel borrowed from a friend with extraordinary taste. Book Casa al Lago for water level suites or the Villa for the historic rooms.
Best for a first Lake Como trip: Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Mid lake position, Bellagio directly opposite, three pools, five places to eat, and the lowest entry rate of the four in shoulder season. You see the most of the lake from this base with the least planning.
Best for a milestone or a celebration: Villa d’Este
The park, the floating pool, the Veranda at night, and staff who have run grand occasions since 1873. Budget honestly, because the room is only the start of the bill.
Best for design lovers: Il Sereno
Urquiola architecture, suite only layout, a Michelin starred dining room, and quiet. If frescoes and brocade make you tired, this is your hotel, full stop.
Best for families: Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Space, choice, a beach club, pizza in the park, and connecting options in a large palace beat the intimacy plays. Villa d’Este runs second here for its park and sports facilities.
Best for food as the main event: Il Sereno, then Passalacqua
Il Sereno holds the only Michelin star at the table among the four dining rooms checked. Passalacqua wins breakfast outright, per both its own reviews and the pattern across guest reports, with dinner the debated meal.
What guests say
Passalacqua
On Trip.com the hotel scores 9.5 out of 10 from 42 reviews, per the rates check in October 2026. Recurring praise covers service, breakfast, the grounds, and the stocked complimentary minibar. Recurring complaints cover dinner inconsistency on busy nights, the small pool filling fast, and day visitors photographing the lobby. The pattern is consistent, a near flawless stay with one meal that divides opinion.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Tripadvisor rates the hotel 4.8 out of 5 from about 1,638 reviews on the listing checked October 2026. Guests praise the Bellagio view, the rooms, the floating pool, and breakfast, and recent 2026 reviews call out the setting as unforgettable. The recurring complaint is restaurant service. A May 2026 review describes dinner service at L’Escale as poor enough to drop the stay to three stars, and an autumn 2025 review details a concierge restaurant booking that was never made. The palace delights, the dining room occasionally does not.
Villa d’Este
Tripadvisor rates the hotel 4.7 out of 5 from about 1,852 reviews, with location at 4.9 and value the lowest subscore at 4.1, checked October 2026. An October 2026 Trip.com review calls the hotel magnificent, with first class service at both the Veranda and the Grill. An August 2026 Tripadvisor review calls the stay magical and the service first class, then flags the catch directly, an Executive Room at EUR 2,100 per night that felt small and tired, with limited storage and no in room coffee or tea. The hotel has publicly replied that a soft refurbishment program is under way. Book lake view categories here, because the entry rooms carry the complaints.
Il Sereno
Tripadvisor rates the hotel 4.7 out of 5, ranked No.1 in Torno, with value again the lowest subscore at 4.1, checked October 2026. Guests praise the quiet, the design, the food, and service that one April 2026 reviewer described as setting the bar, after the hotel rebuilt a full itinerary when a booking had to move. A September 2025 review praises named staff across the pool, spa, and restaurant across a six night stay. The recurring complaints are narrower, a small pool area that other guests and children can dominate, a tasting menu rule that the whole table orders the same menu, and limited dining alternatives nearby without paying for car service. Small hotel, small frictions, high baseline.
FAQ
Is Passalacqua better than Grand Hotel Tremezzo?
For privacy, personal service, and breakfast, yes. For facilities, dining choice, a beach club, and a lower entry rate, Tremezzo wins. Same owning family, different products. Couples booking two or three nights should take Passalacqua. Anyone booking five nights, or traveling with family, should take Tremezzo.
Is Passalacqua worth it over Villa d’Este?
At similar money, Passalacqua gives you the No.5 hotel in the world in 2026, 24 rooms, and a residents only dining room. Villa d’Este gives you 152 rooms, a 25 acre park, more sports, and 150 years of ceremony. Passalacqua is worth it for a couples escape. Villa d’Este is worth it for an occasion. Neither is a bad spend, and booking the wrong one for your trip type is the only real mistake.
Is Villa d’Este worth the money?
Yes, if you book a lake view room or better and use the estate, the floating pool, the park, the Veranda. The value complaints concentrate in entry courtyard and garden rooms that carry grand hotel prices without the lake. The official starting rate for a Classic Room was EUR 1,150 per night, checked October 2026, and lake view categories climb fast from there.
Is Grand Hotel Tremezzo worth it?
Yes for a first Como trip. From about EUR 650 in shoulder season per the Travel and Retreat 2026 guide, it is the most complete package of the four, view, pools, spa, beach club, and five dining venues. Protect the stay by booking the terrace restaurant for the view and treating the trattoria as the casual option it is.
Is Il Sereno worth it?
Yes for design led travelers. From EUR 950 per night you get a suite, not a room, a Michelin starred restaurant, and the calmest setting of the four. It is not worth it if you want grand hotel ceremony, multiple restaurants, or a town full of alternatives at your door.
Which Lake Como hotel should I book for a honeymoon?
Passalacqua for two or three nights of privacy. Tremezzo for a longer, activity filled honeymoon. Il Sereno if you both love modern design. Villa d’Este if the honeymoon doubles as the grand occasion itself.
Which of these hotels is closest to Como town and the train?
Villa d’Este in Cernobbio and Il Sereno in Torno are the closest of the four, both a short drive from Como. Tremezzo and Passalacqua sit further up the western shore and reward a boat based itinerary over a train based one.
