Academy Award®-qualifying short drama to make its Los Angeles Premiere at HollyShorts
Iranian-Canadian filmmaker Amir Zargara’s short film VITAL is gaining attention on the festival circuit with its qualification for consideration for the 2027 Academy Awards®. The gripping drama explores love, desperation and the difficult moral questions surrounding the organ trade, placing two families in separate parts of the world at the centre of an emotionally charged story.
Set between Iran and the United States, VITAL follows a mother in Iran who considers selling her organs in order to afford life-saving treatment for her daughter. At the same time, an American doctor faces an ethical crisis of his own as he desperately searches for a way to save his child. By connecting these two stories, the film examines the choices people are forced to make when love collides with financial hardship, medical desperation and deeply personal moral boundaries.
Rather than presenting the organ trade as a simple question of right and wrong, VITAL explores the complicated circumstances that can drive ordinary people toward extraordinary decisions. The film’s parallel narratives create a human connection between two parents confronting circumstances that threaten everything they care about.
A Strong Festival Journey
VITAL was recently named a winner of the Stage 32 Short Film Contest, adding another distinction to its growing festival profile. The film will also make its Los Angeles Premiere at the HollyShorts Film Festival on Opening Night, placing it within one of the world’s prominent short-film showcases.
The film is additionally nominated for Best Short Film at the Humanitas Prizes, further recognising its emotionally driven storytelling and exploration of complex human choices.
Its qualification for consideration for the 2027 Academy Awards® marks another important milestone for Zargara and the film’s team, giving VITAL an opportunity to reach an even wider international audience as its festival journey continues.
International Cast
International CastThe film features a notable ensemble of Iranian performers whose work has been recognised at major international festivals.
Mahtab Servati, known for There Is No Evil, stars in the film. The 2020 film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, establishing its place among acclaimed Iranian cinema of the period.
She is joined by Reza Akhlaghirad, who appeared in The Seed of the Sacred Fig, which received the Jury Special Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Hossein Soleimani, known for Terrestrial Verses, also stars in VITAL. Terrestrial Verses premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2023.
The combination of these performers brings considerable experience in socially conscious and internationally recognised Iranian cinema to Zargara’s short film.
A Story About the Choices We Make
At its core, VITAL is a story about parents pushed to their limits. The Iranian mother’s willingness to consider selling an organ to save her daughter reflects the extreme consequences of financial and medical desperation, while the American doctor’s situation introduces a different but equally difficult ethical dilemma.
By placing these stories alongside one another, Zargara creates a drama that asks how far someone can go when the life of a child is at stake.
