Beauty Starts Beneath the Surface

How Belline Aesthetics is redefining beauty by treating the body — not just the face
By Paulina Phan

Over the past year, I’ve become fascinated by the concept of functional beauty. The deeper I ventured into the worlds of longevity medicine, functional health, and biohacking, the more I realized that our bodies don’t operate in isolated compartments. Hormones influence metabolism. The gut influences inflammation. Posture affects breathing. Stress alters skin quality. Everything is connected.

That realization led me to another question: if the body functions as one interconnected system, why do we so often treat beauty as though the face exists independently from the rest of the body?

It was a hypothesis I wanted to explore, and it ultimately led me to Belline Aesthetics in Los Angeles.

The Philosophy Behind Belline Aesthetics

Founded by Director Calli, a dual-licensed Doctor of Chiropractic and licensed esthetician, Belline Aesthetics approaches aesthetics through a lens that is still surprisingly rare. Rather than focusing solely on what appears on the surface, Calli evaluates the underlying structure supporting the face: posture, muscle balance, fascial tension, lymphatic flow, and biomechanics. Her dual background allows her to bridge two disciplines that are rarely practiced together: structural medicine and advanced Korean skincare.

The philosophy is refreshingly simple: beautiful skin begins with a healthy foundation.

That philosophy became immediately apparent during my consultation.

Rather than viewing my concerns as purely cosmetic, Calli examined the way I carried tension through my neck and shoulders. Years of computer work had left me with rounded shoulders and chronically tight trapezius muscles. Previous Botox treatments for my TMJ had also altered the way certain muscles compensated during facial movement. Those structural changes, she explained, were subtly contributing to facial asymmetry, lymphatic congestion, and premature aging around my jawline and lower face.

It wasn’t simply about wrinkles.

It was about understanding why they were forming.

That distinction is what separates Belline from many traditional aesthetic practices. Skin concerns aren’t viewed as isolated cosmetic issues to simply mask—they’re treated as signals that something deeper within the body’s structure or function deserves attention.

Part I: Restoring the Foundation with the Terranova Body Treatment

Before addressing my face, we focused on the foundation supporting it.

Belline’s signature Terranova Body Treatment is unlike any body treatment I’ve experienced because it replaces what would traditionally require five separate modalities with one continuous treatment. Throughout the session, the device seamlessly combines heat therapy, bio-energy microcurrent, wave and vibration massage, decompression massage, and built-in cupping and gua sha, creating an experience that feels remarkably relaxing while simultaneously addressing muscles, fascia, circulation, and lymphatic drainage.

One of the most fascinating aspects was learning that Terranova’s bio-energy mode functions very differently from conventional EMS devices. Rather than forcing muscles to contract through an external electrical current, the technology works with the body’s own bio-energy to generate warmth from within, creating a much gentler sensation that feels less like electrical stimulation and more like the body naturally warming itself.

As the applicator moved across my shoulders, I could actually see and feel muscle activation travel well beyond the area being treated. What began in my shoulder extended visibly into my trapezius and neck, demonstrating something functional medicine practitioners have long understood: muscles, fascia, and posture do not work independently. They function as one interconnected chain.

The treatment released years of accumulated tension while simultaneously stimulating circulation and lymphatic flow. But what truly distinguishes Belline is that the machine is only half of the experience. Because Calli is both a licensed chiropractor and esthetician, the softened tissues become the perfect foundation for hands-on myofascial release and chiropractic adjustments immediately afterward. The technology prepares the body; the manual corrections restore alignment. Experiencing both in the same appointment creates a level of integration that would be difficult to achieve through either approach alone.

When I stood up, my posture felt noticeably different. My shoulders naturally settled back, my neck felt longer, and I experienced an immediate sense of lightness throughout my body. Later that evening, I enjoyed one of the deepest nights of sleep I’d had in months—a response that Calli says many clients report once chronic muscular tension has finally been released.

The treatment wasn’t simply about relieving discomfort. It created a healthier structural foundation upon which everything else—including facial aesthetics—could build.

Part II: Korean Glass Skin Meets Functional Aesthetics

With my body more balanced, we turned our attention to Belline’s signature K-Glass Facial.

Inspired by Korea’s coveted “glass skin” philosophy, the facial isn’t built around one machine or one miracle product. Instead, it’s a thoughtfully sequenced protocol that combines advanced technology with an understanding of facial anatomy, muscle balance, and lymphatic function.

The treatment begins with ultrasonic exfoliation, which uses blade-free, high-frequency sound waves to gently lift away dead skin cells and clear pores. Unlike abrasive scrubs that rely on friction or chemical peels that intentionally create controlled injury to the skin, ultrasonic exfoliation accomplishes the same goal without mechanical irritation or chemical trauma, leaving the skin immediately brighter without the need for recovery.

From there, Calli performs one of my favorite parts of the treatment: a Korean-style lymphatic drainage massage that extends through the face, neck, and décolleté. Unlike the relaxation massage offered in many traditional facials, this technique follows the body’s muscular and fascial anatomy to encourage lymphatic drainage, improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and create subtle contouring while restoring healthier movement throughout the tissues.

Depending on each client’s individual skin needs, the facial can also incorporate technologies such as LDM Water-Drop Ultrasound for deep hydration, radiofrequency (RF) to encourage collagen production, HIFU for lifting and tightening, and Belline’s signature AirShot, a needle-free air-pressure delivery system that helps active ingredients penetrate more deeply into the skin without injections, punctures, or downtime.

What impressed me most, however, wasn’t simply the technology: it was Calli’s philosophy.

Because of her background in chiropractic care, she approaches facial aging through the lens of structure rather than symptoms. Facial asymmetry, puffiness, chronic redness, and even certain skin conditions aren’t viewed as cosmetic flaws alone, but as clues that invite a closer look at posture, muscle imbalance, fascial restriction, lymphatic flow, lifestyle, and overall health. Her understanding of facial anatomy transforms the treatment from a relaxing facial into something that feels genuinely therapeutic.

I had arrived after sleeping only four hours, and the lack of rest was evident. My face appeared puffy, tired, and slightly uneven. By the end of the treatment, the difference was remarkable. My complexion looked brighter, my skin felt deeply hydrated, and my jawline appeared noticeably more defined. Even the subtle asymmetry I had noticed beforehand looked softer and more balanced.

Why These Treatments Belong Together

Although both treatments can absolutely stand on their own, experiencing them together revealed something important.

The Terranova Body Treatment restores the body’s structural foundation by improving posture, releasing fascial restrictions, encouraging healthy lymphatic flow, and reducing chronic muscular tension. The K-Glass Facial builds upon that foundation, enhancing skin quality while working with muscles and tissues that are no longer fighting against years of accumulated strain.

One treatment supports the body.

The other refines the face.

Together, they reflect a philosophy that is becoming increasingly relevant in functional medicine, longevity, and modern aesthetics: true beauty doesn’t begin with the skin — it begins with the health and balance of the entire body.

After spending time at Belline Aesthetics, I left with more than glowing skin and relaxed shoulders. I left with a renewed appreciation that beauty isn’t created by masking symptoms or chasing quick fixes. Instead, it emerges naturally when the body is properly aligned, supported, and functioning as the interconnected system it was always designed to be.
