Hotel awards are a noisy business. Every publication has one, every brand publicizes the ones it wins, and the average traveler has no idea which list to trust. Here is the honest breakdown of the three award franchises that actually move bookings in 2026, who won the most recent editions, and how to read them like an insider.

The Three Lists That Matter
Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards: The Reader Vote
The biggest and most influential. T+L's World's Best is a straight reader survey, hundreds of thousands of voters rating hotels, cities, islands, airlines and cruise lines. The 2025 results, announced in July 2025: the World's Best Hotel was andBeyond Bateleur Camp, a 19-tent safari camp in Kenya's Maasai Mara, which earned a perfect reader score of 100. Capella Hotels and Resorts took World's Best Hotel Brand. Paros was named World's Best Island. San Miguel de Allende was World's Best City. Singapore Airlines took best international airline. Crystal won midsize-ship, Viking small-ship.
How to use this list: excellent for trip ideas, terrible for contrarian value. Winners get booked out and priced up fast.
Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards: The Insider Vote
CNT's Readers' Choice, announced each October, is the older and slightly more establishment of the two reader surveys, with deeper regional granularity. The 2025 edition confirmed several trends: Regent Hong Kong was named the number one city hotel in Asia, two years after its dramatic renovation and reopening, also top-placed in the T+L survey. The consensus pick for Asia's best urban hotel right now.
How to use this list: the regional categories are its superpower. When choosing between three hotels in one city, the regional rankings are the most useful single data point available.
Forbes Travel Guide Star Awards: The Inspection
The odd one out, and the most rigorous. Forbes sends anonymous inspectors to evaluate hotels against hundreds of objective service standards. Five-Star is genuinely hard to earn. The 2026 Star Awards, announced in February 2026 (68th annual): the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's Ilma became the first cruise ship in Forbes history to earn Five-Star; Daniel Boulud's Le Voyage on Celebrity Xcel became the first Five-Star restaurant at sea. First-ever Five-Stars in Nikko, Japan (Ritz-Carlton, Nikko), Turks and Caicos, Montenegro (One&Only Portonovi) and Saudi Arabia's Red Sea project (Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve). Atlanta earned its first double Five-Star with the St. Regis Atlanta and Atlas restaurant.
How to use this list: Forbes Five-Star is the best proxy for consistent, inspected service quality. For special-occasion trips where you cannot afford a miss, start here.
What the 2025/2026 Winners Tell Us
Three trends: safari and remote experiential luxury is the industry's prestige center (a tented camp in the Maasai Mara beating every palace hotel is the market speaking). Asia's urban hotels are on an extraordinary run (Regent Hong Kong, Capella, Singapore and Tokyo properties across all lists). Cruising has entered the luxury awards conversation as an equal (a Five-Star cruise ship and Five-Star restaurant at sea would have been unthinkable a decade ago).
How to Read Any Hotel Award Like a Pro
Check the methodology before the winners. Reader votes reward popularity and recency; inspections reward consistency. Watch for the sponsor effect: awards are a business, and the publications sell advertising to the winners. Cross-reference: a hotel that wins across T+L, CNT and Forbes in the same cycle is a genuine consensus pick. Ignore the long tail: every list past the top twenty is filler. And remember what awards cannot tell you: whether a hotel fits you. Use the lists to build the shortlist, then match the shortlist to the trip.
What Winning Does to Prices
Winning is expensive for you. A hotel named World's Best anything typically raises rates 15 to 30 percent the following season and sells out its best room categories months ahead. The move is to book the runners-up: the number two and number three hotels are usually 90 percent of the experience at 70 percent of the price, with actual availability. Awards are a discovery tool. The smart money books just below the headline.
The Bottom Line
T+L tells you what travelers loved most, CNT tells you the best hotel in your specific destination, and Forbes tells you what was independently inspected and verified. Use all three, trust the consensus winners, and book the good ones early.
