As artificial intelligence increasingly finds its way into the most personal parts of everyday life, filmmaker Lisa is asking an uncomfortable question: what happens when technology can offer us a version of intimacy without any of the complications that traditionally come with human relationships?

Her short film tAInted Love explores that question through a near-future relationship story centered on AI companionship, loneliness and the temptation of perfectly customized connection. The film will screen on opening night of the HollyShorts Film Festival, after Lisa became the sole winner of the Stage 32 competition, earning the project its place in the festival lineup.

 

When the Perfect Partner Goes Offline

Set in a near-future Los Angeles, tAInted Love begins at a dinner party where several couples appear to have found seemingly perfect romantic partners. Everything changes when the power suddenly goes out and several of those partners abruptly go offline.

The disruption creates an intriguing premise for a story about relationships in a world where technology can potentially eliminate many of the frustrations, disagreements and uncertainties that make human intimacy complicated.

The film uses that scenario to consider the appeal of AI companionship while asking whether removing friction from relationships might also remove something essential from the experience of being human.

 

A Storyteller With a Long History of Exploring Relationships

Although tAInted Love marks Lisa’s directorial debut, she comes to filmmaking with years of experience thinking and writing about human connection.

A graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Lisa is also a bestselling relationship author and has worked across entertainment, publishing, branding and communications. Her professional background gives her a particularly relevant perspective on a story examining how people connect, fall in love, experience loneliness and attempt to navigate changing ideas of intimacy.

Rather than approaching AI relationships solely as a technology story, tAInted Love places the subject within the much older and more complicated questions surrounding human relationships.

 

Can Technology Really Replace the Messiness of Love?

The film’s near-future setting provides an opportunity to explore some increasingly familiar questions. If an AI companion can be customized to match someone’s preferences, personality and emotional needs, what happens to the unpredictability that has always been part of falling in love?

There is also the question of loneliness. Technology can make connection easier and more immediate, but tAInted Love considers whether convenience necessarily translates into genuine intimacy.

By putting its characters in a situation where their seemingly ideal partners suddenly disappear, the film creates a space to examine what those relationships actually mean when the technology supporting them is no longer available.

From Stage 32 to the HollyShorts Opening Night

The journey of tAInted Love to HollyShorts adds another significant element to Lisa’s filmmaking debut. As the sole winner of the Stage 32 competition, she earned the opportunity to have the film screen on opening night at HollyShorts, placing her first film in front of an international festival audience.

For a first-time director, the opportunity represents an important early milestone and a fitting launch for a project that is itself focused on a rapidly evolving aspect of modern life.

 

A Timely Conversation About Modern Connection

With AI increasingly influencing how people communicate, work and form relationships, tAInted Love arrives at a moment when the boundaries between technology and intimacy are becoming harder to define.

Lisa’s perspective makes the film particularly intriguing. Her career has centered on understanding relationships and the ways people navigate connection, while her debut as a filmmaker gives her a new visual language through which to explore those ideas.
