You might be like a lot of other people when it comes to your bathroom – you’ll know there are some upgrades and updates you want to make, but because you don’t spend hours in there (unlike your living room, kitchen, or bedroom, for example), it tends to slip your mind, or at least not feel quite as important as making sure everything else looks and feels good. But since the bathroom is a hugely important room in the house, and it’s somewhere you really should be able to relax in, it’s worth working out how to improve it, so with that in mind, here are some tips to help you.
Change The Lighting
Bad bathroom lighting just makes the room feel so much worse, no matter what else you do or improve, so it’s massively important to get that right from the start, otherwise anything else you do isn’t going to matter very much.
After all, if the room’s too dark, it’s awkward to get ready in, and if it’s too bright, it all feels clinical and unflattering. Most bathrooms are going to work best when you add layered lighting, rather than having to rely on one big ceiling light, so installing some bathroom wall lights can be the ideal solution.
You Need Enough Storage
Bathrooms collect clutter very quickly, and from half-used bottles to skincare products to towels and cleaning supplies, once it all starts piling up, that room just isn’t going to feel like a relaxing space anymore – if it ever did.
The best thing to do is invest in some good storage so everything has a place (and have a clear out before you start moving things around because it’s likely you’re not going to need to keep everything). Add some hooks for robes and towels, an undersink cupboard or vanity unit for toiletries, and some shelving for the things you’ll want when you’re in the bath or shower (like shampoo and shower gel), and you’ll already improve things quite a bit.
Better Ventilation Improves Everything
A lot of bathrooms stay damp for far too long after showers, which might not seem like an issue until you realise it’s causing the paint to peel, the towels are never really dry, mould starts appearing, and it all just feels constantly humid.
Improving ventilation usually fixes most if not all of those problems, so if your extractor fan could do with an upgrade or you need to find another way to keep the air moving (like partially opening a window, for example), it’s definitely worth it.
How Do You Use The Room?
This sounds obvious, but the fact is that lots of bathrooms look very nice but they’re not easy to use, and that’s not a great situation to be in.
If there’s nowhere to hang things, the mirrors aren’t in the right places, it’s too dark or too bright, and so on, you’re just not going to want to spend time in there, and it’s never going to feel good. So fixing the little things can make a big difference.
