A legendary Shanghai landmark is entering a bold new chapter as Accor and Jinjiang International Group announced the transformation of the Fairmont Peace Hotel into the Raffles Peace Hotel Shanghai, set to debut in 2027. The move marks a significant milestone for both the iconic property and the Raffles brand, promising a new era of ultra-luxury hospitality in the heart of China’s most cosmopolitan city.
A Storied Past, A Glamorous Future
Perched on the edge of the Bund overlooking the Huangpu River, the Peace Hotel is one of Shanghai’s most historic and architecturally revered buildings. Originally opened in 1929 as the Cathay Hotel by the visionary British businessman Sir Victor Sassoon, the building is a masterpiece of Art Deco design. Since 1984, it has been owned by Jinjiang Group and has operated as the Fairmont Peace Hotel since 2010.
The hotel’s planned transformation into a Raffles property underscores its enduring cultural and historical value, and it will remain open to guests during the transition. By 2027, it will re-emerge as Raffles Peace Hotel Shanghai, joining a prestigious roster that includes the original Raffles Singapore and the recently restored Raffles London at The OWO.

“This magnificent hotel is a precious gem and a landmark in an all-important destination,” said Omer Acar, CEO of Raffles Hotels & Resorts and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. “As the stewards of such an iconic property, we are exceptionally proud to guide it into a glamorous new era with Raffles.”
According to Kent Zhu, CEO of Accor Greater China, “The history of the Peace Hotel is the history of Shanghai. Now, Raffles will add an exciting ultra-luxurious dimension for this grand hotel, where ideas are born, history is made, and stories and legends are created.”
Dong Qing, General Manager of Shanghai Peace Hotel Co., Ltd., emphasized the cultural significance of the transformation. “The new Peace Hotel will not only blend history and modernity but also provide a fresh way to share the story of Shanghai with global guests. We are keeping alive the cherished cultural heritage of the Peace Hotel.”
A Fusion of Elegance and Culture
The revitalized Raffles Peace Hotel Shanghai will deliver a unique blend of past and present, featuring elegant design, curated fine art, extraordinary culinary experiences, and Raffles’ signature bespoke service. The hotel’s refreshed interiors will capture the vibrant spirit of modern Shanghai while paying tribute to its storied past. Treasures protected by the National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit will be preserved and seamlessly integrated into the updated design.
In true Raffles fashion, the hotel will be a destination for travelers and locals alike—where refined British etiquette, Asian grace, and Chinese heritage intersect. From elegant afternoon teas to world-class mixology and gastronomy, guests can expect the signature experiences that have made Raffles a global icon.
Strengthening a Trusted Partnership
Accor and Jinjiang International Group have developed a strong partnership built on mutual trust and a shared vision for preserving cultural heritage through hospitality. With Raffles taking the helm, this next chapter is set to combine Accor’s global luxury expertise with the Peace Hotel’s rich legacy.
The Peace Hotel’s transformation is also part of a broader expansion for the Raffles brand, which is rapidly building a robust portfolio in China and around the world. In China, Raffles already operates distinctive properties in Macau, Shenzhen, and Hainan. Internationally, it is present in renowned destinations including Paris, London, Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, the Maldives, Udaipur, Phnom Penh, and Bali, among others. Recent openings include Raffles Sentosa in Singapore, with an upcoming launch in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
