A dedicated lounge will help preserve a seamless experience for eligible passengers as Asiana Airlines prepares to leave the alliance
Incheon International Airport is preparing for an important change in its premium passenger experience. Star Alliance and Incheon International Airport Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a dedicated Star Alliance lounge in Terminal 1, ensuring continued lounge access for eligible passengers after Asiana Airlines departs the alliance on December 16, 2026.
The agreement comes as Asiana Airlines moves toward integration with Korean Air, a transition that will reshape the airline landscape in South Korea and alter the way Star Alliance passengers are served at one of Asia’s most significant international gateways. Rather than allowing the change to disrupt the pre-flight experience, Star Alliance and Incheon International Airport Corporation are working to create continuity through a dedicated lounge designed around the needs of passengers travelling with member airlines.
The new facility is expected to begin operations during the fourth quarter of 2026. It will occupy the existing Asiana Airlines Business Lounge in the western section of Terminal 1, transforming a familiar space into a new Star Alliance-branded environment.
Maintaining continuity through a period of change
For many frequent international travellers, airport lounges are an essential part of the journey. They provide more than a place to sit before departure. Lounges offer a quieter environment, work space, refreshments, connectivity and a sense of consistency—particularly valuable for passengers moving between different airlines, airports and time zones.
Eligible Star Alliance passengers currently use Asiana Airlines lounges at Incheon International Airport. With Asiana Airlines scheduled to leave the alliance, the new arrangement is intended to protect that access and make the transition as seamless as possible. The planned Star Alliance lounge will allow qualifying passengers to continue enjoying premium services without having to navigate an entirely unfamiliar airport experience.
This continuity is especially important at an airport where international connections are central to its identity. Incheon serves as a major gateway between South Korea, Asia and the wider world, and its Terminal 1 remains a key operating base for a number of Star Alliance member airlines. The new lounge will therefore function not only as a hospitality space, but also as a visible expression of the alliance’s long-term commitment to the airport.
A strategic location for a global alliance
The importance of the partnership is reflected in Incheon’s growing international role. According to the announcement, Incheon International Airport ranked as the world’s number one airport for international passenger traffic during the first half of 2026. Its scale, connectivity and reputation make it a natural location for Star Alliance to strengthen its premium infrastructure.
Fourteen Star Alliance member airlines currently operate at Incheon, connecting passengers to 29 destinations around the world. The dedicated lounge will provide a shared space for travellers flying with those carriers, reinforcing the central promise of an airline alliance: a journey that feels connected even when it involves multiple airlines.
That promise has become increasingly important as international travel grows more complex. Passengers may purchase a single itinerary that includes several carriers, transfer through different airports and rely on alliance-wide benefits such as lounge access, priority services and frequent-flyer recognition. A dedicated lounge gives those benefits a physical presence, helping turn the alliance’s global network into a more consistent customer experience.
The seventh Star Alliance lounge worldwide
The Incheon facility will become the seventh Star Alliance lounge worldwide, joining existing locations at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. While the alliance’s broader lounge access network includes more than 1,000 airport lounges globally, its own branded facilities are designed to offer a distinct expression of the Star Alliance experience.
The new lounge will be expected to reflect the standards associated with the alliance while responding to the practical demands of Incheon’s international passenger base. Its location in Terminal 1 is particularly significant, as it will allow eligible travellers to remain within the terminal environment they already know while benefiting from a dedicated alliance identity.
The lounge is also likely to become an important meeting point for passengers travelling for business, leisure and long-haul connections. Incheon’s role as a regional hub means that its premium facilities must serve a broad range of travellers, from frequent flyers seeking efficiency to international visitors looking for comfort between flights.
A shared commitment to service quality
The agreement reflects a mutual interest in maintaining service quality during a major period of change. For Star Alliance, the partnership supports its goal of delivering a consistent experience across its member airlines. For Incheon International Airport Corporation, it strengthens the airport’s position as a premium international hub and helps preserve the quality of services available to passengers.
Ambar Franco, Vice President of Customer Experience at Star Alliance, described Incheon as an important gateway for the alliance and emphasized the shared commitment to a consistently high-quality passenger experience. The new lounge, she noted, represents an opportunity to welcome member airline customers at one of the world’s leading airports while reinforcing the alliance’s presence in the region.
Kim Chang-gyu, Chief Operating Officer at Incheon International Airport Corporation, positioned the agreement within the airport’s wider efforts to provide stable, high-quality services amid major changes, including the integration of Asiana Airlines and Korean Air. He also highlighted the corporation’s intention to support Star Alliance member airlines through operations and facilities, allowing them to expand their networks and continue serving customers from Terminal 1.
Their comments point to a partnership that extends beyond the lounge itself. The facility is part of a broader effort to ensure that the airport remains adaptable, competitive and capable of supporting the needs of global airline networks.
The future of premium airport hospitality
The new Star Alliance lounge at Incheon arrives at a moment when airport hospitality is becoming an increasingly important part of the overall travel experience. As airlines compete not only through schedules and fares but also through loyalty programmes and premium services, lounges have become a key point of differentiation.
For passengers, the value of a lounge often lies in its ability to make an otherwise stressful journey feel more manageable. A comfortable seat, reliable connectivity, thoughtful refreshments and a calm environment can significantly change the experience of a long connection or early departure. For an alliance, a dedicated lounge also communicates reliability: the idea that passengers can expect a familiar standard of service even when travelling far from home.
At Incheon, that message will be particularly relevant as the airport adapts to the departure of Asiana Airlines from Star Alliance. The new facility is designed to ensure that this structural change does not become a disruption for eligible passengers. Instead, it offers a renewed expression of the alliance’s presence and a practical reminder of the value of shared networks.
When the lounge begins operations in the fourth quarter of 2026, it will represent more than the conversion of an existing space. It will mark a new chapter in the relationship between Star Alliance and Incheon International Airport—one focused on continuity, connectivity and the belief that premium travel should feel seamless from one destination to the next.
