The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled the first group of recipients for its 2026 TIFF Tribute Awards, celebrating some of the most influential artists working in global cinema today. Presented in partnership with Rolex, the eighth annual gala will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Toronto’s historic Fairmont Royal York Hotel, recognizing exceptional achievements in acting, directing, and socially impactful filmmaking.
This year’s first honourees include Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz, legendary South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, acclaimed British actor Rosalind Eleazar, Oscar-winning filmmaker Siân Heder, and French cinema icon Isabelle Huppert. Together, the five recipients represent decades of artistic excellence and a shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
More than just a celebration of cinematic achievement, the TIFF Tribute Awards have become one of the industry’s most closely watched events, often signaling the beginning of awards season while raising funds that support TIFF’s year-round artistic and educational initiatives.

Since launching in 2019, the TIFF Tribute Awards have evolved into one of the festival’s signature events.

Penélope Cruz Receives the TIFF Special Tribute Award
Academy Award-winning actor Penélope Cruz will receive the TIFF Special Tribute Award, presented by CHANEL.
The recognition celebrates Cruz’s extraordinary contributions to international cinema and her lasting influence as one of the world’s most accomplished performers.
The timing is especially fitting, as Cruz arrives at this year’s festival with two major premieres.
She stars in Bunker, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Zeller, and La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi from a screenplay co-written with Alberto Conejero.
Her busy 2026 slate also includes Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! alongside Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Peter Sarsgaard, as well as Olivia Wilde’s The Invite with Seth Rogen and Edward Norton.
Cruz became the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award and has built an extraordinary career through acclaimed collaborations in films such as Volver, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Nine, and Parallel Mothers.
Beyond acting, she continues expanding her creative influence through her production company Moonlyon, launched in partnership with The Mediapro Studio.
Looking ahead, Cruz will also lead Nancy Meyers’ long-awaited return to directing in a new feature scheduled for release during Christmas 2027.
Lee Chang-dong Honored With the TIFF Ebert Director Award
Visionary South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong will receive the TIFF Ebert Director Award, presented by The Tory Family.
Named after legendary film critic Roger Ebert, the award recognizes directors whose work has fundamentally shaped modern cinema.
Lee returns to TIFF with the premiere of Possible Love, an emotionally rich drama examining relationships alongside generational and class divisions.
Before becoming a filmmaker, Lee established himself as an acclaimed novelist, a literary background that continues to influence the depth and humanity of his films.
His celebrated filmography includes Peppermint Candy, Oasis, Secret Sunshine, and the internationally acclaimed psychological thriller Burning, which became one of the defining works of contemporary Korean cinema.
Throughout his career, Lee has consistently explored themes of memory, morality, grief, and social inequality while creating films celebrated for their emotional intelligence and philosophical depth.
Rosalind Eleazar Recognized as a Rising Screen Talent
British actor Rosalind Eleazar will receive one of this year’s TIFF Tribute Performer Awards.
The honor recognizes her standout performance in Chris Rock’s Misty Green while acknowledging her rapidly expanding career across film, television, and theatre.
Many audiences know Eleazar from her acclaimed role as MI5 agent Louisa Guy in the award-winning espionage drama Slow Horses.
Her television work also includes Missing You, Class of ‘09, Deep Water, Harlots, Rellik, and National Treasure.
On stage, Eleazar most recently appeared opposite Ralph Fiennes in Small Hotel, further demonstrating the remarkable versatility that has made her one of Britain’s most exciting acting talents.
Isabelle Huppert Continues a Legendary Career
Joining Eleazar as a TIFF Tribute Performer Award recipient is French cinema legend Isabelle Huppert.
With a career spanning more than 100 films, Huppert remains one of world cinema’s most respected performers.
At TIFF 2026, she reunites with director Marc Fitoussi for the comedy All About Corinne, in which she portrays a background actor pursuing one final opportunity to break into the competitive world of French cinema.
Over several decades, Huppert has collaborated with many of Europe’s most influential filmmakers, including Claude Chabrol, Michael Haneke, and Paul Verhoeven.
Her landmark performances in films such as The Piano Teacher, Elle, and Things to Come have established her as one of contemporary cinema’s defining artists.
The TIFF Tribute Performer Award recognizes not a single role but an entire body of work, making Huppert an especially fitting recipient.
Siân Heder Honored for Impact Through Storytelling
Academy Award-winning writer and director Siân Heder will receive the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media, presented by Anne-Marie Canning.
Following her historic Oscar-winning success with CODA, Heder returns to TIFF with the world premiere of Being Heumann, a historical drama centered on disability rights pioneer Judy Heumann.
The film stars Ruth Madeley alongside Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo and tells the story of one of the most influential activists in disability rights history.
