Whitney Woerz is a 21-year-old artist and writer from Manhattan. Signed to 10:22pm at Universal, she released her first single in a few years titled ‘Sad Love.’ The song holds a message for anyone going through heartbreak to know that the bad always leads to the good and that heartbreak can lead to something magic. Whitney has been releasing music since the young age of 14, but just now has discovered who she truly is artistically and spiritually. With jazz influence, pop driving hooks, and inspiring lyrics, Woerz has started in a new era of Pop music.

How did you get find your love for music?

I found my love for music as a small Whitney in elementary school doing musical theater. Then at 13 I started writing music with my best friend for a girl who was going through a rough depression. That led to me never stopping!

What has been your greatest struggle?

My greatest struggle has been my own depression in the past. My high school years were rough with mental health, heartbreak and family stuff, but because of what I went through, it shaped me into the person I am today. It’s funny to say, but I am thankful for the darkness that has occurred in my life because without it I wouldn’t be where I am today.

How would you describe your musical style?

I feel like everyone thinks it’s something different lol! But when I label my genre, I like to say “Jazz Pop.”

What instruments do you play?

My main instrument is the drums. I play in my live show with my drummer who’s also a woman. We like to think it’s badass female power 😉

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere and in everything. I write about my own life, stories my friends tell, higher consciousness thoughts I have, things I see on the street, poems/journal entries I write, even a smell has inspired a song. I love having no boundaries when it comes to writing.

Who are your influences?

My main influences are definitely all different genres- Twenty One Pilots (best live show of all time i’ve seen it 19 times ha!), Frank Ocean, ASAP Rocky, and The Strokes. Yes that is an interesting combo, but if you listen to my new music you can pick up on each separate influence.

Tell us about your experience moving to LA. What do you like about it? How has your life changed?

I just moved to LA 5 weeks ago and it’s so right for me. I always knew I would move here when I was 21 and here I am! I drove across the country from Nashville with my mom in a Uhaul truck and found omens along the way assuring me that this was the correct move. The universe works in funny ways so it put my best friends here too at the same time all for different reasons. Even in this short amount of time, I feel more myself, have been making inspiring music, and feel more connected to the artist I have been becoming!

What was it like producing your own music video? Tell us your Amazon story:

Surprisingly, I wrote my latest single ‘Sad Love’ 3 years ago. And for those 3 years I always knew I wanted this very specific music video that metaphorically showed how heartbreak can lead to great things. We captured my vision of rigid Victorian ballroom dancing in black and white portraying a bad relationship which then dissolves into full color and modern fairy-like outfits in a whimsical forest. I hope it will inspire someone going through a breakup. Funny story, I was given a low budget for the video and $100 dollars of it was for wardrobe which was impossible to style a 30 person cast of ballroom dancers! So I went to trusty Amazon and bought $8000 dollars of beautiful Victorian dresses and suits and then returned it all! So my wardrobe spend ended up being $0 😉 (I did not tell my label I was spending that much till I got it all back, they freaked). And as for the dancers, I cast my college friends and taught them how to ballroom dance over a few beers 😉

How do you achieve higher consciousness?

I have been on a higher consciousness journey for 4 years now. It started after watching a movie called Waking Life which I strongly recommend to those wanting to step into a more interesting part of the brain! I have been paying attention to my thoughts, actions, the way my body feels and learning tools to navigate life. It’s become a fun and challenging game. If I had to boil down how I achieve this state, It’s about observing everything. Become a life observer and you’ll be a life lover.

Why is gratitude so important?

Gratitude is important for so many reasons. Being grateful releases dopamine and serotonin in the body, making ourselves, our cells, and the people around us happy :). It reminds us of what’s good in life when maybe things aren’t going so well. When I’m sad, even though it’s hard, I think of all the things and love I have in my life, and I do feel a switch in my system. Gratitude also tells the universe you are open to receive more!

One’s reality is achieved through the thoughts one believes in their head. How do you take a thought and manifest it into your dreams?

Ah, manifesting. The main way I achieve it is through actually believing- literally knowing. A lot of people stop “manifesting” at just picturing and “hoping” something will happen. To me, I’ve only found success in it through truly believing. It’s so hard and makes me mad sometimes, but with enough trust and patience, things really do happen. It’s all energy.

Everyone has a past…sometimes, it can be quite dark. How would you suggest letting go of your past so that you can achieve great results for the future?

The past invites us to grow and learn. Acceptance is the best tool for letting go. I travel to past traumas as my higher self through meditation and send love and acceptance to me and the situations. Considering there’s only one now moment, it’s literally going there and healing that part of your self/past. Picture it in your mind as many times as you need while giving your love to it.

What is the best way of connecting with someone?

I feel it’s different for each relationship, but I’d say something in common with someone is the best way to start a connection. As for something physical, live music has brought me together with the best humans 🙂

How would you recommend anybody to take their career to the next level?

Belief. Trust. Patience.

What projects are you working on now?

While not releasing music for 2.5 years, I have been in studios writing a ton of new music! I have an album ready that I do not know when is coming out, but so so much music soon!

Tell us about your experience being cast in the background choir and never giving up.

When I was a theater kid, I tried out for shows from age 7-14. Each show I would never ever get a lead role. I would practice so much, be so excited, then always get cast in the ensemble standing in the background. Literally like “townsperson number 7” would be the name of my roles. But little Whithey still loved to perform more than anything, so I took those roles and had a good time. Though, I always believed I was better than just standing in the choir… And yay now i’m signed to Universal! I never gave up!

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty is everything around us and in us! Beauty is every single human being special and different. Beauty is walking down the same street for the hundredth time and noticing something you hadn’t seen before. It’s the light in someone’s eyes. It’s sitting alone at a coffee shop. The little things and the big things, the good and the bad, love and heartbreak. All of life is beautiful.

How would you describe success?

Success is definitely different for everyone, but I’d say it’s making yourself happy doing what you love.
