There is something inherently sacred about the way Mediterranean cultures gather around a table. It isn’t just about the food; it’s a living, breathing celebration of life, freedom, and the beautiful threads of history that connect us.
This summer, while back home in the Metro Detroit area visiting family, we had a monumental reason to celebrate. We were honoring my beautiful Gia Gia, Kyria-Koula, marking her 70th year in America since immigrating from Greece, as well as her upcoming 97th birthday. As Greeks do, we gathered the community, the culture, and the family together to celebrate the absolute gift of living.
Our destination for this historic family feast was The Modern Greek, a spectacular, family-owned gem that completely swept us away.
An International Vibe Built on Passion
From the moment you step into The Modern Greek, you are transported. The aesthetic is a total international vibe—it immediately reminded me of the modern, minimalistic, classic luxury feel of the Qatar airport (a place I never wanted to leave!). With its warm-toned, super-inviting lighting, the space strikes the perfect balance between high-end design and cozy familiarity.
The genius behind this paradise is the owner, Sam Haidar. Sam actually started his career in construction, helping other businesses build and design their dreams before bringing his meticulous eye and heart to creating his own business. Knowing that his daughter works alongside him in the restaurant adds an extra layer of warmth; it’s a true family legacy, and his pride is palpable. Though Sam was born in Lebanon, the Mediterranean bond is universal—same incredible cuisine, same authentic soul, and a shared gift for hospitality.
Royalty Treatment from First Hello
The hospitality here is next-level. The host greeted us with a radiant, warm welcome. Another team member came over and shared that my Gia Gia reminded him so much of his own grandmother, bringing tears of connection to our eyes before we even took our seats.
When it came to seating, the staff went above and beyond. My mom loves a booth, so they happily guided the four of us to a spacious booth. To ensure we had absolute comfort, they naturally brought over extra table extensions usually reserved for groups of six. I felt entirely royal!
We were barely seated for two minutes before the culinary magic began.
The Feast: From Saganaki to Slow-Marinated Lamb
Here is a look through my lens at the unforgettable dishes we shared:
- The Dynamic Entry (Photo: Arrival & The Menu)
Anticipation was high as we arrived, menus in hand, ready to dive into a menu that beautifully bridges traditional flavors with a fresh, contemporary execution.

- ΟΠΑ! (Photo: Flaming Cheese)
We kicked off the feast with the classic Σαγανάκι (Saganaki). The tableside cry of “OPA!” filled the air as the flaming cheese arrived, perfectly golden, bubbly, and rich.

- Small Plates with Big Heart (Photo: The Appetizers)
Sam brought out a massive spread of appetizers—four distinct dishes that showcased the kitchen’s versatility. A massive, vibrant Greek salad arrived loaded with pristine olives and beets (my mom’s absolute favorite).
As a seafood lover, the fresh calamari paired with a scratch-made, signature cream sauce was a total standout. But my absolute personal favorite was the spicy shrimp. Because my mom and Gia Gia aren’t big fans of heat, Sam thoughtfully brought out a separate, non-spicy portion just for them. It was a sweet, incredibly attentive gesture that speaks volumes about their service.

- The Main Event (Photo: The Entrées)
For our main courses, we went family-style to capture everyone’s favorites:
- The Fish Girls: Gia Gia and I happily dived into the perfectly prepared, delicate salmon and chicken.

- The Meat Heads: My dad was in absolute heaven with the classic lamb chops and the legendary lamb shank.

Editor’s Note: They marinate this lamb shank for days, and it shows. The meat literally melted right off the bone the moment a fork touched it. Incredible.

- Sweet Closures (Photo: Dessert)
Though I ultimately had to jet off to the airport and didn’t have time to fully indulge in a long dessert session, the dessert photo speaks for itself—a beautiful, sweet exclamation point on a perfect meal, and a definitive reason to return ASAP.

Generations of Connection (Photo: Dad, Gia Gia, Our Server, and Sam)
Beyond the plates, the true magic of the evening was the conversation. It was next-level connection. When my dad first saw Sam, he felt an immediate warmth in his spirit, as if they had met in a past life. As they chatted, they realized they shared mutual friends and connections across local businesses in the greater Metro Detroit area. Our server was exceptionally sweet, friendly, and felt like part of the family by the end of the night.
We are all here because of my Gia Gia. It is so imperative to pay homage to those who came before us, to respect the lands we come from, and to honor our heritage.
