Namia River Retreat: A Sanctuary of Wellness and Luxury in Hội An

By: Tracie May

Having lived in Vietnam for six and a half years and traveled extensively throughout the country, I have been fortunate enough to experience many of its most extraordinary destinations. Hội An remains my favorite. There is something about this ancient riverside town that continues to pull me back. Its lantern-lit streets, faded yellow façades and centuries-old merchant houses have long made it one of Vietnam’s most seductive places to linger, but beyond the familiar beauty of the Ancient Town lies another Hội An, one shaped by coconut palms, fishing villages, rice paddies and the slower rhythms of life along the Thu Bồn River. It is within this softer, more tranquil landscape that Namia River Retreat has curated something quietly remarkable.

Aerial view of the resort

Set on its own private islet and surrounded by water and tropical greenery, Namia feels wonderfully removed from the destination’s busier edges, despite being only a short journey from the center of town. The transition happens almost immediately as roads give way to river views, noise begins to fall away, and the landscape becomes greener, softer and noticeably still. I recently spent three nights at the resort, and within hours, the hurried pace of everyday life had begun to feel surprisingly distant.

The resort comprises just 60 villas, each with its own private pool and a sense of seclusion that immediately distinguishes the property. My Nipa Pool Villa felt almost hidden among the greenery, with natural materials, warm woods and subtle Vietnamese design details creating an interior that was elegant without ever feeling overly styled. Floor-to-ceiling windows brought the landscape inside, while beyond the bedroom, a generous terrace opened onto my own private salt-water pool overlooking the river. Inside, the suite felt equally indulgent, with a deep sunken bathtub that the staff would prepare with fragrant herbs, ready and waiting for my return in the evening. The flowing indoor-outdoor design, water views and complete sense of seclusion made the villa feel wonderfully cocooned, whether I was beginning the morning with coffee beside the pool or winding down in complete comfort before a restful night’s sleep.

Taking a dip

Privacy feels built into the very architecture of Namia River Retreat. Although I knew the resort was at full capacity during my stay, I rarely crossed paths with other guests while wandering through the lush grounds, and there were moments when it genuinely felt as though I had the entire property to myself. Villas sit discreetly within the landscape, pathways wind quietly through tropical gardens, and the design creates an extraordinary sense of seclusion without ever feeling isolated. Yet that privacy never comes at the expense of attentive service. Throughout my stay, I was looked after by a dedicated guest experience host, always just a WhatsApp message away and ready to arrange anything I needed, often before I had even given it much thought. It is a rare balance: having the space to feel completely alone while knowing that thoughtful, intuitive service is always within reach.

The Resort’s main pool

Namia describes itself as wellness-inclusive, an important distinction because wellbeing is not treated as an optional addition to the stay, but rather as one of its foundations. Every night includes a 90-minute wellness journey, meaning that over my three-night stay I enjoyed three separate 90-minute spa experiences, each already woven into the natural rhythm of my time at the resort. Instead of having to decide whether to carve out a few hours for a treatment, wellness becomes something awaiting you each day, an invitation to slow down and surrender to its gentler pace.

Lumina Wellbeing & Spa

Treatments take place at Lumina Wellbeing & Spa and are rooted in traditional Vietnamese practices, particularly Thuốc Nam, or Southern Herbology, which draws upon indigenous plants, herbs and botanicals long used in Vietnamese healing traditions. Herbal steam, bodywork, traditional therapies such as cupping and a range of restorative techniques are woven together into rituals that feel deeply connected to Vietnam rather than borrowed from a generic international wellness playbook. The scent of herbs fills the steam rooms, treatments unfold without haste, and everything seems designed to gently pull you away from the constant stimulation of everyday life. After travel, work and weeks spent moving from one commitment to another, those 90 minutes each day became far more valuable than I had initially expected.

Lumina’s Relaxation Lounge

Wellness extends throughout the property with yoga, meditation, mindful movement, Vietnamese Tai Chi, sound healing, cycling and other daily activities, yet there is never any sense that guests are expected to follow a prescribed program. That freedom is part of the appeal. You can immerse yourself completely in the wellness offerings or enjoy your treatment and return to your villa to spend the afternoon beside the pool with nowhere else you need to be.

Food is another area where Namia feels deeply connected to its surroundings, particularly at The Merchant, where I enjoyed breakfast and dinner throughout my stay.  The restaurant follows a farm-to-table philosophy with a strong emphasis on Vietnamese ingredients sourced from local farms and markets, alongside herbs and vegetables cultivated onsite. Regional seafood, meats and seasonal ingredients form the backbone of the menus, resulting in dishes that feel fresh, thoughtful and firmly rooted in place.

Breakfast at The Merchant

That approach feels especially fitting in Hội An, a city whose culinary identity has always been shaped by movement and exchange. For centuries, it was one of Southeast Asia’s important trading ports, connecting Vietnam with merchants, spices and ingredients arriving from China, Japan, India and Europe. The Merchant references that history with subtlety, allowing those influences to inform the menu without turning dinner into a history lesson. The cooking feels contemporary while remaining unmistakably Vietnamese, with regional ingredients and flavors placed firmly at the center.

Namia’s Sunset Cocktail Cruise

There is something about dining beside the water in Central Vietnam that shifts the mood entirely. The air cools, boats drift past, the light softens, and everything seems to settle into a gentler rhythm. At Namia, the Thu Bồn is far more than a backdrop, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the resort’s Sunset Cocktail Cruise. As afternoon slips toward evening, guests embark on a leisurely voyage with cocktails and canapés, passing fishing boats and palm-lined banks transformed by the changing light. It is beautifully understated and one of the loveliest ways to discover this quieter side of Hội An.

Seen from the water, Hội An takes on an entirely different character. Daily life along the banks comes into sharper focus, the horizon opens up, and the energy of the Ancient Town gradually gives way to a more tranquil perspective. Namia carries this idea further with The Merchant River Cruise, an elegant evening dining journey along the Thu Bồn that brings together Vietnamese culinary traditions and Hội An’s centuries-old trading heritage.

On the Merchant Cruise

By night, the river takes on an entirely different character as the lights begin appearing along the banks and Hội An’s colorful silk lanterns shimmer across the dark water in the distance. There is something intimate and cinematic about seeing the city this way, removed from the crowds gathering along the shore and watching that familiar glow from an entirely different perspective. Hội An is undeniably beautiful from its streets, but from the river it takes on an almost dreamlike quality.

Resort at Giờ xanh or Blue hour

Namia River Retreat is led by General Manager Michelle Ford, whose background in wellness hospitality is evident throughout the property. There is a clear philosophy behind the resort, yet importantly, it never overwhelms the guest. Wellness is integrated rather than imposed, design is refined without becoming self-conscious, and service is polished without ever feeling overly formal.

The staff were consistently warm, gracious and genuinely hospitable throughout my stay, reflecting the natural generosity that remains one of Vietnam’s great strengths as a hospitality destination. There is attentiveness, but also restraint, and the team seems to understand instinctively when to step in and when to allow guests the space to simply enjoy their surroundings.  Luxury travel is ever evolving, and for many of us it has become less about excess and more about access to things that are increasingly difficult to find: space, silence, privacy, authenticity and time. Namia River Retreat understands that instinctively, bringing together thoughtful design, Vietnamese wellness traditions, exceptional food, a remarkable river setting and warm, intuitive hospitality in a way that feels both elevated and deeply grounded in place.

After three nights of slow river mornings, lingering breakfasts, daily wellness rituals, beautifully prepared Vietnamese food and evenings drifting along the Thu Bồn, I left feeling restored, wonderfully spoiled and more than a little reluctant to return back home. Hội An has always possessed a rare kind of magic, and Namia River Retreat offers a quieter, more intimate way to fall under its spell.
