Macau has no shortage of luxury hotels, but Melco Resorts and Entertainment thinks there is room for one more that feels like nothing else on the Cotai Strip. REM, the new luxury hotel at City of Dreams Macau, officially opens this October 2026. It soft-opened in August through an invitation-only program, and its grand opening follows Macau’s October Golden Week. The 149-room property, built inside the former Countdown Hotel tower, is named for REM sleep, the stage of dreaming, and every design decision runs through that single idea: a stay that lives on the boundary between imagination and reality.

What REM Is: The Dream Concept
REM takes its name from Rapid Eye Movement, the sleep stage in which the brain is most active and dreams feel most vivid. Melco’s concept is an immersive sanctuary that moves between reality and imagination, pitched at trend-conscious travelers, well-traveled tastemakers, and guests who put a premium on privacy and personal attention.
The hotel’s internal tagline is “Shake You Awake.” The design language is reflected light, layered materials, and a carefully choreographed layout that carries guests from the visible to the concealed. It is deliberately anti-formula: no grand front desk arrival, no standard room templates, no public booking-channel presence during its trial period. Under the leadership of Melco chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho, the invitation-only soft-open phase is being used to fine-tune every detail of service before the official inauguration.
The Opening Timeline
The timeline is tight and deliberately staged. REM welcomed its first guests in August 2026 through a private, invitation-only program. During this phase the property stayed absent from public booking channels. On Melco’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, Ho confirmed: “We’ve actually soft opened REM already. We’re easing into it. The grand opening is set for after Golden Week in October.” An October 14, 2026 industry analysis of Melco’s build pipeline lists REM’s status as “soft opening Q3 2026; grand opening after Golden Week, October 2026,” with the grand opening expected in the second half of the month. Travelers should check the hotel’s current reservation arrangements before planning a stay, since the wider opening was phased rather than instant.
REM is not a ground-up new build. It replaces the former Countdown Hotel, with the existing tower completely redeveloped. The renovation mobilized master craftsmen and international designers to create what Melco describes as a seamless, bespoke residential experience.
149 Rooms Across 7 Categories
REM has 149 rooms, mostly suites, spread across seven room types. Every category shares a palette of rich red set against cool, shimmering metallic tones, with shifting layers of light and shadow. The atmosphere is designed to adapt to each guest’s mood, whether the goal is quiet contemplation, a lively gathering, or a restorative evening in.
The seven categories, in order:
The Premier Room. The entry-level category carries the same daring approach as the suites, using color, texture, and light to create an intimate sensory retreat.
The Twilight Suite. Inspired by Macau’s nocturnal skyline, the suite layers light and shadow to define the space. Its signature swing sofa sits near the window, positioned for watching dusk settle over the city.
The Luminous Suite. Facing east, this suite features a rotating bed that lets guests change their view at will and wake to the first golden light of the day.
The Euphoria Suite. Sweeping views of the Cotai skyline come with a swing sofa and private wellness facilities, including an infrared sauna.
The Hypnotic Suite. Bold, opulent patterns and textures interact with dynamic lighting to blur the line between reality and illusion. Private butler service, a swing sofa, and a 360-degree rotating bed complete the setting.
The Haven. Contemporary art defines this suite, where curated wall art and photography play with fashion-forward light and shadow. A sleek bar area suits gatherings, and a private butler anticipates guests’ needs.
The Lair. The hotel’s ultimate expression crowns the 30th floor.
The Lair: A 1,200-Square-Meter Villa Above Cotai
The Lair is REM’s penthouse villa and its headline act. The 1,200-square-meter private world sits atop the 30th floor, reached by dedicated elevators. Inside: a 360-degree rotating bed dressed in crimson velvet, an infrared sauna, a swing sofa, a private wellness and bathing sanctuary, and a signature indoor-outdoor pool suspended above the Cotai Strip. A crystal basketball hoop, a DJ booth, and a metallic bar add a social edge, and private butler service lets guests control every detail of the stay. At 1,200 square meters, it is one of the largest hotel villa footprints in Macau.
Arrival, Check-In, and Butler Service
The experience begins before guests reach a front desk. At the porte-cochère, cascading crimson light trails arc overhead and draw visitors away from the bustle outside. A textured portal made of petrified wood opens onto a luminous corridor. In the lobby, two arched private lounges offer an intimate setting for check-in, and in most room types guests check in inside their own room, accompanied by a dedicated butler. The approach keeps privacy and flexibility at the center of the stay.
In-Room Tech and Amenities
Every room includes an in-room control tablet, a soaking bathtub, an experiential rain shower, bathroom floor heating, a built-in Bluetooth speaker, and a maxi bar. An intelligent control system lets guests adjust the ambience from one interface. Select room types offer accessible configurations, and rooms come in both king and twin-bed layouts.
Dining, Pool, and Wellness
On the third floor, an outdoor pool echoes the lines of the hotel’s architecture and reads as an oasis floating above the city. Beside it sits the all-day dining venue Reverie Café, whose name draws from the notions of life as a dream and imagination without boundaries, pairing a relaxed poolside mood with culinary exploration. The fitness center is the first in Macau to feature the premium Life Fitness Symbio series, combining biomechanical precision with refined luxury in a bright, airy space, with professional personal training available.
Where REM Sits Inside City of Dreams
REM joins two established luxury hotels at City of Dreams: Morpheus, known for its futuristic architecture, and NÜWA, inspired by refined oriental elegance. Together the three hotels anchor the resort’s positioning where futuristic artistry, innovation, and contemporary luxury meet. Guests also have access to Michelin-starred dining, the “House of Dancing Water” water spectacle, luxury retail, and works by leading contemporary artists.

For scale: the City of Dreams complex carries about 2,270 total rooms, over 30 restaurants and bars, 175,000 square feet of retail space, 420,000 square feet of gaming space, 496 gaming tables, and 487 gaming machines. The “House of Dancing Water” theatre holds one of the world’s largest commercial pools, approximately 3.7 million US gallons, with seating for up to 2,000 patrons.
What Melco’s CEO Says About REM
Lawrence Ho has been unusually direct about the ambition. On the earnings call he described REM as “unlike anything in Macau. It’s actually more like it’s unlike anything in Asia, probably the world. It’s a very unique product. It’s a lot of fun. I think it’s luxury, but it’s highly differentiated from anything that’s in the market or even at City of Dreams.”
The hotel is one piece of a broader overhaul of Melco’s flagship Macau integrated resort, which includes a reconfiguration of the gaming floor (a new 18-table gaming area opened near the Southwest entrance at the end of July 2026) and an extensive redesign of the retail areas. Once complete, Ho expects the overhaul to position City of Dreams as “the nicest property in all of Macau.” For context on the operator: Melco’s total operating revenues were about $1.25 billion in the second quarter of 2026, compared with $1.33 billion a year earlier.
How to Book REM
During its soft-open phase, REM stayed off public booking channels, accessible only by invitation. With the grand opening landing after Golden Week in October 2026, travelers should check the hotel’s current reservation arrangements before planning a stay, since availability and booking routes may still be phasing in. City of Dreams Macau is in the Cotai district, the main integrated-resort corridor between Taipa and Coloane.
When to Go: The October Timing
The grand-opening window is deliberate. Macau’s October Golden Week, the week-long National Day holiday period, is one of the busiest travel periods of the year for the territory, when visitor arrivals from mainland China surge. REM’s invitation-only soft open ran through the summer, the grand opening lands after Golden Week ends, in the second half of October 2026, and travelers arriving for the late-October and November season get first access to the fully open hotel. It also means the property debuts just as Macau’s peak winter travel season begins building.

Why REM Matters for Macau Luxury
Macau’s luxury scene is crowded, and Melco knows it. Ho himself has said that Macau already has some of the nicest hotels in the world and that there is an oversaturation in the luxury market. REM is the bet that differentiation still wins: a suite-led, 149-room tower with a dream concept, rotating beds, crimson velvet, a basketball hoop in the penthouse, and butlers at every turn. For luxury travelers planning a Macau stay in late 2026, REM is the new name to know, and the second half of October is when the doors officially open to the world.
